does your child have auditory processing disorder? Auditory processing is how we make sense of the sounds around us. In this video, we look at this disorder and auditory processing disorder treatment ideas. We also chat about what auditory processing disorder symptoms look like and how this is aligned with the larger sensory processing disorder. Some kiddos experience sensory overload. Occupational therapy assistants and occupational therapists help kiddos feel regulated when this takes place. As a pediatric occupational therapist we study these areas and work with many kiddos who present with challenges in these areas. Sensory integration disorder is becoming more known, and auditory processing disorder (toddler and older) is a part of S.I. disorder. Auditory sensory processing disorder can be overwhelming for parents but with the right information it can be decreased or managed. Kids ot help has put together an entire sensory processing playlist to help you become informed. Auditory sensitivity is common among children with autism. Auditory sensory overload is more common that kiddos seeking auditory input. ▶▶▶Insta - nekole.ambe...

Thanks for the video. I have auditory processing disorder and as a young child, nobody knew what it was back then. I was born with 2 neurological disorders and I never grew out of it. It is still a problem today but education and understanding why and what it is, is key for me! This is all fairly new acknowledgement in research and understanding the brain. The superior temporal lobe gyrus plays a big part in processing sound. Temporal lobe seizures and autism is one explanation.

My oldest is like this. I have brought it up many times but(Dr., Early Intervention and teachers.) This is the first time someone really got into just the auditory issues. Ive also noticed that sounds with more white noise is more bothersome to her.

I'm 38 years old and have it. lol! One time some of the people in my apartment complex were having a very loud May 4th Star Wars night and I didn't know it was May 4th and couldn't put two and two together so I blasted Yungblud music then my friend said, "Wait it's the 4th" that's when I turned off Yungblud lmao! But yes noise like that or I'll smell my neighbors cig smoke and get so furious that I have to put bags under my door, hear my neighbor blast music basically whenever they want (because they are rude) can barely hear the damn TV so I have to put subtitles even when it's not even loud in my apartment complex, thought maybe one time someone was in my house then looked behind me and it was the neighbor talking in his house. Please don't let dr try and diagnose your child with BPD or Bipolar because mental health professionals will try and do that crap to. Nothing is wrong with me I just have APD and due to people never listening to me I get treated like crap. I think I may have ADHD also. But APD has gotten worse and worse and worse over the years. I just got my food handlers certificate though because I love dishwashing and bussing tables which is a very hard job because it's super loud but oddly enough I like certain loud noises it's so weird...maybe it's because I love the job so much. I tried it once and loved it so it's like the noise doesn't bother me much it's so weird. But then I worry because I could only get one day but my manager was really anal and passive aggressive. Sorry for the rant it's just your child may struggle with this through out the years but just know they aren't dumb and it may always be a struggle but they can succeed.

I cover my ears when it's really loud in class. It's not easy to do it discreetly but I try to bc I'm in Yr 7 and not a little kid anymore.

Thank you so much this video was very informative! I noticed my son started doing this at 3 1/2, he just turned 4 February 24th. He will yell it’s too loud of several people are talking, ect. I thought it was just something changing with him until Saturday we were at Motorcross in Atlanta when I noticed two other young boys covering their ears and getting anxiously antsy. Thanks for the wonderful tips😊

Aw. Omg I'm 38 years old and have APD and can relate. When my ex blasts metal thrash music I get rageful but he has ADHD and is going through a metal phase right now lol! So we made a plan (we do uber eats together) instead of going to do it with him all day he listens to whatever he wants to listen to while I stay home. He lives about maybe 20 min away from me so as he is doing uber eats in his area he can listen to anything he wants, he then makes his way around my area by about 2 to 3pm and relaxes (he can burn out quickly) then by about 5pm we head out to do uber eats and do it to about 10pm to 12 am but he can't play thrash metal if he does I have to be in an okay state of min. Gabapentin has helped me but it can be addictive so I have to be careful with it. So yes making plans and being on the same page helps. Setting time limits, getting out of the noisy area helps. One time I told my ex "Sure find play your music all day I am in such a good mood" and he literally did it all day big mistake because I ended up getting GERD, a headache, and was depressed. Oddly enough sense we were doing uber eats we ended up getting a Food Truck order and this kid was rolling in a box lmao and it got my mind off of it so distraction techniques and a good laugh help. After that I was fine. Just some advice. lol! Like I said I've been dealing with this for 38 years and it just gets worse and worse. Also a relaxed environment helps. I am the master of quitting jobs because with APD and or ADHD I can't stand strict rules nor can my brother who has ADHD and my father was a rule follower because how he grew up and because me, my mom, and brother have some sort of APD or ADHD we aren't rule followers not me and my brother at least so strict rules in the work place aren't for me. My boss in the past was so good with this. He would say, it's okay if you want to take an hour lunch, if you need to call out as long as I didn't take advantage. But I also have to know in the resturant business that it's not gonna be like that and oddly enough I just got my food handlers card and want to pursue a job like this lmao!

I have always wondered why my girls are so sensitive to sound, With my oldest I did make the mistake by try and avoiding the things that would make her upset and now I try to incorporate these everyday noises to her normal routine . It dose get exhausting and I do feel defeated but i also have to understand that this is how they receive the noise.

Hi, my son gets really scared and covers his ears whenever he sees/hears robots, spaceships, car racing on a cartoon show. He also gets upset when a song ends, can this be a probable sound sensitivity issue?

Hi, my 11 year old is currently going thru testing for possible dyslexia. She has scored high for her verbal IQ (age 16) average for spatial anylsis. She has scored well below average for numeracy (age 7) and information processing is age 5. She has real problems with time, distance, organisation. She also tends to zone out a lot esp at home. If she is watching Tv and we say something to her it has to get repeated many times before she 'hears' us. Her hearing has been tested and its normal. Could this be Auditory Processing Disorder?

At what age does this apply? Is it something that you'll notice as your child grows older? What about young infants?
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 4 года назад
Hi there! It can absolutely start in infancy. Obviously symptoms/signs would look different, but sensitivity to sounds to the level that it effects functioning can absolutely take place in newborns.

Would have loved listening to this, as someone with APD, but how many times can you say kiddo. Yikes. Just call them kids or children.
