I understand. Westies are amazing dogs. They will always leave an imprint on your heart. Mine passed away 3 years ago and I still think about the little guy every day.
I’ve owned four Westies and while they all had their own individual quirks and personalities. Wanting cold fresh water is one of the things they all had in common. Also their funny lil way of asking for it with their beautiful eyes and body language always makes me giggle their like please mum I want it cold 😂
Mine will only drink filtered water in a fresh bowl and the bowl gets washed right before refilling it. But outside, she’ll drink rainwater puddled in a tarp covering the lawnmower!! 😂
OMG! They are beautiful dogs! I miss my handsome boy. Mines wanted fresh, COLD water in a big bowl, non plastic, 3 times a day. I would put some ice cubes in his bowl to keep the water cold. He was 17 when he passed. 🏴
@ulisesacosta5543 its hard. Remember and take lots of pictures and videos. If possible, add another fur baby before your older one goes. You're not replacing the older one, and you're not running away from the obvious. It's good to distract u, but u also learn to keep going, and it helps u to realise the need to love more fur babies who won't experience what your one felt in being loved. My stray cat helped me at the time. Still hurts, though, but the cuddles were a great comfort.
Our Maya did the same thing every day - she just would not drink water that had been in the bowl more than a few minutes, she just passed away 2 months ago after 16 glorious years, we miss her like you would not believe, watching your videos keeps my smiling
My Westie called Sparky behaves the same way. He will not drink water that is more than a few hours old. For some reason, they just know fresh water is fresh. The water may also be colder coming from the faucet. He will also drain half of the bowl of water in one long gulp.
Of course he does ..he is a westie 😂😆💖💖💖. My westie isn.t an affectionate doggy nor gelous but if my mom gets next to me on the couch she gets in between us in 1 second and loves me dearly 😆😆😊😙 😂. The best breed ever . 😙
Does my Sophie do the same? She did until I developed MS, and couldn’t pick her up anymore. She wants fresh water after each “drink.” Just to test her “Westitude,” I’ll watch her looking-up at me. No doubt I know what she’s thinking: “Hey you, get me fresh water NOW!” Lol And, of course, I oblige. Like Sami, she drinks A LOT of water at one time, so don’t worry something’s wrong with Sami…it’s just in their DNA. It possibly could be because their ancestors spent long stretches clearing-out mines of vermin, and filled-up on water knowing it would be a while until water was available. Just my theory. Scotland has clear, clean, cold streams…another trait left in our Westies. Last theory: Their ancestors were just as cute, so I’m pretty sure they were just as spoiled!
That is interesting! And it does make sense. When I think about it, he only drinks water maybe twice a day, if he stays in. If we are on the road more, he drinks more (probably something to do with temperature and the amount of effort too). But he always drinks A LOT 😅
That's cute I would like fresh water too is it's been sitting all day. My westie passed away in 2021 and I would refresh his bowl 3 to 4 times a day because he loved fresh cold water.
Try getting him a fountain with a filter. Cats can be this way too. Something about preferring running water instinctually because stagnant water could contain disease. Running water doesn’t. So, the sound of running water stimulates drinking and therefore running water is preferable to the standing water.
I looked into it and almost bought one, but after doing some research I ended up not buying because it seems easier to change his water every few hours than cleaning the fountain, changing the filters, making sure it's well maintained - I read in the reviews that if you don't properly clean it inside, the bacteria can harm your dog). It just seemed more complicated than cleaning the bowl and making sure he has fresh water :)
I'd 2nd the filter. So can kinda compromise by giving filtered water in his bowl. None of us or our pets should drink right from the tap. Personally I use "clearly filtered" pitcher. Maybe he just likes it cold? Could put the filtered water in ice cube tray and use those in filtered water bowl :)
What a cutie! No, I’ve had dogs all my life, mixed breed, greyhound, German Shepherds, Cavachon. None have done tgat. But one of my mixed breeds would carry her water bowl to us if it was empty!
My beloved westie, Tully, used to do this ALL the time. This was a result of bathing her in our own tub where she started drinking from the faucet and developed a new preference. We had a battle of will where I tried to force her to drink from her own bowl of water, but of course, she won. Miss you, Tully. BTW your dog is adorable as well.
Our Westie prefers fresh ice water & definitely doesn’t drink stale water. If she gets to her bowl & the water is “stale” then she will look up at me as if to tell me to change the water to what she likes to drink. Our Westie looks exactly like yours here so of course we indulge her because she’s such a cutie pie! LOL! 🥹☺️😊🤪😂🤣
My Westie loves “habit” things. There’s a checklist in her head, swim, get the mail, play ball, play laser, walk, hunt for lizards and bunnies, etc. and we have to do all the items. If I had started this water ritual when my Christy was young…we would HAVE do it everyday.
Lol too freaking adorable! Thank God my Westie does not do this, that means all she’s gonna do is get more and more thirsty because she’s drinking tap water 😂❤
Ha! My westie is similar! I change his water in the morning but he wont drink it until he watches me change it or I have to top up the bowl with chilled , filtered water 😂
Never had a dog do this but I used to have cats that would lol! I used to drive my parents crazy when I was younger because I would leave a tiny stream of water running for the kitties all night 🤦🏻♀️😅😂
My previous dog drank from my shower (the hand held part). My husband insistent that I do not "teach" our westie the same. I think they just like fresh running water.
Mine only likes filtered water lol we got her used to it...She also takes her food bowl out of its compartment that helps her eat better, and she smacks it all over the floor until we cave and give her more food 😂
Our westie Piper injured her leg a month ago, she can walk around now but we’re limiting her activity (and she’s too old for surgery). When she was totally unable to walk we’d bring her fresh water in a bowl, now unless she’s really thirsty she refuses to drink from the regular water bowl. We’ve created a monster 😂
