If there are any common clarifications in the comments/ updates/ corrections/ more information, I'll edit this comment to include more information! The majority of these tests (the ones at the beginning of the video) were done in the first Toad House of the game! Actually depending on which one you get it swaps to the other box say for example you got the small one first on world 1 and you got all four power ups, all you would have to do is wait till you make it to world 3 and than get the other box (the big one of course) rinse and repeat it goes back and forth and works everytime
@@flinch2440 there's no lie I been playing the game like this for a while, the boxes are not luck base, it goes in a pattern, and once you learn the pattern you can easily get 4 powers ups in each item box, its like that in the wii u version also so they didn't change it.
Actually, not every toad house has 2 mushrooms, world 3 onwards swap a mushroom for a tanooki, then world 5 onwards have a boomerang replacing the second mushroom Though the bad reward never changes
I could've sworn on Wii U all the standalone toad houses gave the reward from W3, and the toad houses built into the worlds themselves (like the second one in W1 and the last one in WB) gave the W1 reward.
"Happy Birthday to you!" "Open your present!" "Aw, just a mushroom?" "That's weird, let me give you another present." "Just a mushroom?" "Ok, you are the most unlucky birthday boy I've ever seen."
This shouldn't surprise me, as I've seen how chances work in other Nintendo games, but when you see two boxes for the first time, your mind ends up thinking it's a 50/50 chance. Thank you for trying this and also showing how they work in Spotlight!
I honestly thought that, during my second playthrough on the Switch, that if you alternated boxes each time you enter (small box, then big, then small, etc.) you would get the good reward every time. Turns out I was wrong.
Well it not random which ever one is the big price first. The next toad house is going to be the other box so if it the big box then the next time it going to be the small box do you get what I'm saying 😊
I think ZXMany has probably memorised the Super Bell Hill land by now, he uses that land in nearly every video Edit: Omg thank you so much for 7 likes in 40 mins 😱
@@noathern Great question! Modding every level is essentially the same, and sometimes a level like Super Bell Hill is actually more difficult to work with depending on how you'd like the camera to follow you/ if you'd like to edit it! I often use Super Bell Hill for convenience, and because most people are familiar with the first level of the game :D But for something like adding present boxes, it'll work in the same way in every level
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the 4 power-ups that appear aren't always a Super Bell, 2 Super Mushrooms, and a Fire Flower. I think that as you progress through the game the Super Mushrooms get replaced by a Super Leaf, and a Boomerang Flower. Also I think this is also how it works with the roulette blocks in the gambling machine thing.
@@Sp3ctralI I don't know about that, I was referring more to the whole thing with the power-up boxes, if it was an EA game, they would be loot boxes that you charge real money for, and the chances would be way more skewed toward getting a mushroom more than the good power-ups, therefore encouraging you to spend more money till you do get a good power-up
This is like the most generous casino ever lmao. Really cool video! I'm *extremely* surprised that the two boxes are independent of one another, I would have almost certainly thought one was always good and one was always bad. Though it is a bit disappointing that you can technically get scammed and not get the good reward from either box :/
I’m learning about probability in math rn and this video is just what I needed. Thank you so much, ZXMany for making this. Now I understand how probabilities work and I’m gonna brag about what I know in class tomorrow LOL 😂 Edit: I meant to say Monday because it’s Friday and I accidentally forgot LOL 😂🤣
I did the math with a calculator, there is a 56.25% chance of getting both good rewards, an 18.75% chance for the big to be good but not the small (and vice versa, meaning there is a 37.5% of getting both) and a 6.25% chance of getting two bad rewards.
"One super bell, two mushrooms and one fire flower" I believe the prizes get better as you complete more levels, because by the end of the game the boxes used to give me one super bell, one boomerang, one tanooki suit and one fire flower
These kinds of videos are simply amazing. They give a huge amount of clarity on how certain things work in this game. I hope you continue to experiment with more official things!
This game is just so fun to mod because of how much possibilities there are as well as cut content. Makes me wish Nintendo actually incorporated these ideas in 3DW on WiiU or add them to 3DWBF. This is why I feel DLC could be a thing in 3DWBF. Hell, I can imagine a Super Mario Maker 3D from this! Nintendo did have some editor for SM64 that felt like it be possible for that.
For speedrunning, we actually recommend opening the box that corresponds to your size (Small Mario/Big Mario) Through our experience, if you have any Powerup, you are more likely to get a good reward out of the big box.
Throughout my playthrough, every time I did a toad house I only got the bad presents. I thought that the mushroom was the good prize until I saw red falcons playthrough
It's designed that way to keep the player playing the game I think, since to the player it would feel like they chose correctly and got lucky, and the other box disappears so they don't know that both boxes actually had the big reward, so they feel good about it and continue playing. When something bad happens in a game a lot of players will see that as a good time to stop, so the game is trying to make the player feel lucky. The small reward only exists so that the player will think that they really did choose correctly because they know there is a small reward too and they will think the other box (that disappeared by now) had that reward in it
Pretty common, it's just the matrix trick. Believe in freedom of choice, make it look like you're just good at making choices but it's just an illusion. Lot of games employ tactics like that as players like games they think they're good at. It's why a lot of people have disdain for player vs player because you often have to face other players are better and you're losing. Lot of people actively avoid that.
Thanks so much for going behind the scenes & showing us how these games are designed. Thanks also for keeping the content "clean" and kid-friendly. I'm thrilled that my 7yo is learning about video game design from your videos.
Pretty sure the way it works is that if you chose the small one last time and it was the good one, the big one will be the good one next time, then the small again if you keep the streak
I figured this out when i was little but if you choose a box and it has a bunch of items in it, the other box (small/big) will be the one with the items in it the next time. I dont know if this is true on nintendo switch but it works on the wii u
So sorry I'm late I couldn't use this device for 2 weeks! I actually thought it was a 50/50 I always pick the big box lol You are the best youtuber ever! I love your content and modding and just everything is amazing keep it up please!
I legit did not know you could get one mushroom. On mine I always get the good reward and I thought the cat suit, fire flower and two.mushrooms was the bad reward and the one that included the boomerang and tanooki suit were the good rewards. This has widened my knowledge.
swear for me, I've gotten the 'bad' boxes 90+% of the time when I do the toad houses, to a point that I just never visit them, and just go to that bob-omb cave level for easy super leaves instead, yep. least there my odds of getting what I want is 100%!
I actually found out that you can switch between each box every time (I'm not sure if this is the case) but for me I would get the good reward 95% of the time
As far as I knew the good and bad boxes alternate between toad house visits. I've never had a first toad house visit have all of the good items in the small box. Similarly, I've never had a second toad house visit that that had all of the good items in the small one. Either putting a bunch of boxes in one house breaks that, or I'm just extremely lucky and have kept running into _extremely_ predictable RNG.
i assume this means the result is calculated the moment you hit the box and it's not predetermined when you enter the room whether a certain box has the good reward
But does the present watcher work on ? blocks? Would be neat to make a level with two paths where two ? blocks with different powerups spawn a door when you hit them, while deleting the other.
Outro Mario: "wait Wait WAIT WHY IS HE DOING THE OUTRO Come back ZXMany I don't want to be stuck here this isn't fun you can't do this to me! It's a-me, Mario, the Number O--" *_video ends_*
I haven't watched the video yet, but I am pretty sure the answer is no. Commonly when I play through Super Mario 3D World (In both Switch and Wii U versions) the first mystery box you can go to has the better prize in the biggest one, and the second one has the better prize in the smaller one. But maybe only those two are scripted, and the rest are random? I'm not sure, but I will add an edit if I am wrong. Edit: I was wrong.
Just before I watch the video, I am going to predict. Based off of my experience, they alternate. I have personally never had it be the same prize in each box twice in a row before.
Well, I guess I have just been extremely lucky in my personal experience. I also didn’t expect each to have the same chance. I had gone with the small one for my first 3, and got the 4 power ups the second time, but not the first or third, so I started alternating and always got the 4 power-ups.
What about the boxes in the later Toad Houses? Are they the same object with different rewards, and if so, could you add custom rewards or custom chances for certain rewards?
