Will third party software installed on your Ubiquiti EdgeRouter survive an upgrade? You can watch the video to see -- but the answer in this case is -- kinda. TL;DW - The config files and software were preserved but we lost our interface. Do you have tips/tricks to share about how to make this work -- if so, post in the comments below!

I haven’t applied the last hotfix, since I’m running wireguard on an ER and too lazy to reconfigure multiple sites and endpoints. Hopefully, I’ll be able to jump directly to the next version of EdgeOS. I know it will support wireguard and the RC versions preserve existing configurations.

Hi Willie, I must admit I played with ZT and found it a pain to load and expose to the GUI as a more novice user having a play and a few failures reboots etc. I did however stumble on Tailscale as an alternative and found the Tailscale install package was a way more friendly third party to load as a novice and it just likes the edge router X so little CLI commands needed. So watching on in interest as I need to solve the firmware update and pretty sure your good work will transfer accross.

now i wanna now about edgeos 3.0 :D I thought that the edge line was kinda discontinued :O

The 3.0 early access has been floating around for over half a year now. Nothing to get too excited about, honestly, and I don‘t think Ubiquiti will put too much renewed effort into the Edgeline even with that.

Basically just a user interface update. So far I don't see anything to be excited about.

@@Lagittaja There are quite a few background changes that were loooooooong overdue, especially regarding security (the fact that they kept using an OpenSSH package that has been actively exploited for over a year now is just mind-boggling). Not to mention that the underlying kernel got a big update too. Not really any relevant new features, although I don't think there are any features missing as it is.

I lost access to the ampr-ripd when upgrading to 3.0. Did reinstalled, but the kernel changed, so it doesn't work.

Could you build in some kind of script that will run automatically after an update? If so, could you have it automatically check interface and if it’s not there automatically rebuild it?

Have you identified a manner to complete your upgrade w/o impacting your ZT configs? I ran into similar issues with BSD based systems. The TUN simply dissapears but leaves the config present.

Why does it need to be an Edge router? Why not OpnSense router with Zerotier?

Cost, ease of management at scale, and having to plan to be able to walk someone with little to no tech knowledge through setup and or troubleshooting.
