Dog Explores Differences Between Humans and Animals | What About Bunny

Bunny has cut away the superfluous differences between us. Underneath all the unimportant stuff, we're brought together by the fact that we all poop.

When she said "Human, Please" i felt that

"Human, please" was the kind of sass I didn't think dogs had :'D

I think she likes the word animal because it's inclusive of dogs and humans. So instead of focusing on "not human" she has switched to the word that includes both, "animal." She also likes "we" and "family." And you know, this makes a crazy kind of sense considering Bunny's breeding. She's part sheep dog, she groups things. So she's trying to group you and her together under a single word... animal. And "we" and "family" are grouping words as well. Her buttons are her sheep and she's herding meaning into groups. :D

It isn't just her vocabulary and communication that's impressive. Her reasoning and analysis is also growing. There's definitely a connection between conversation and how the awareness of more complex thought. I am in awe of her progress.

I think that Bunny sometimes talks to be talking, just like kids. Maybe she really wants mom and dad to be dogs like her. Or to be a human just like mom and dad. 😍💖

She is trying to figure out what an animal is exactly. Compare animal to plants or rocks or water to her. Show different kinds of animals, like bird, fish, cat, turtle. Show her cars and things like "tug" or toys are not animals. Define and confirm her animal family - maybe the word "mammal" will make sense to her. You never know. She seems to be needing clarification, but how much is enough for her. She is quite surprising with her observations and questions - unless I am "reading" in to her a bit too deep. But I think a door has been opened, here. A flood of questions, thinking, comparisons and ideas are just flying from her mind! I love it. I want more of what SHE thinks and wants! I want to know how everything in the world - seems to her!! LOL, the world according to Bunny - no guessing because she is indeed talking to us! This ended up being an awesome idea, these buttons - a big thanks to Stella!

It'd be great to train about 50 dogs like this and watch their conversation.

This is all so incredibly impressive. Her language skills are getting better and better, just like a child's while growing up!

Bunny is only 2 years old. Compare Bunny’s level of communication and comprehension to that of a 2 year old human child. I’m impressed.

It's okay Bunny, you can be a human if you want to lol. You can really tell she's been thinking a lot about the human and dog thing and doesn't want to be different from Mom and Dad she wants to be the same. she's so adorable.

These videos are incredible - we know animals aren't stupid but to be able to reason, and recall other events, time of day, the weather and ask questions is amazing to see. What we must be mindful of is how much work 'mom' puts into this. Absolutely dedicated, and devoted. It's heartwarming.

I would so love to see you talk more about her dreams. My dogs has a lot of nightmares, we adopted from a kill shelter. I worry sometimes cuz I can't talk to her like you do to bunny.

I love watching these videos. Bunny has become so interactive and seems to want to have conversations with you. It’s totally amazing. What a sweet, intelligent girl. You must feel so rewarded to be able to communicate with her like that. We have a 5 year old labradoodle who I would like to just start her on pressing the button for “outside”.

I wonder how much more Bunny would say if she could talk and wasn’t restricted to using buttons….. she may repeat herself a lot because she wants to connect and “talk” but doesn’t have the buttons to say everything she likes. (You can only have so many buttons….)

Sooo cute! You are so patient with Bunny which clearly enables her learning! I am considering this when I get my next dog. We have an 11 year old Labrador who I know understands a good amount of what we say. She knows the names of her toys and chew things. She definitely knows walk and cookie as well as the kids names. I will be devastated to lose her, but I know that time will come. Thank you for sharing your journey with Bunny. It allows me to realize what is possible and I feel Bunny enjoys the connection as much as you do. Thanks again for this channel!

I still think she wants more clarification on what counts as animal as people or family or friend or stranger. I’m pretty sure she’s trying to figure out how people (inc animals) breed because she’s stuck on the adoption concept. A bit of “where do babies come from?” because she looks different to her parents and possible sibling (cat). Do you do field trip lessons with a smaller/reduced version of the keyboard? I wish she could put two buttons pressed together or a double press to get a third word to keep the keyboard smaller the way a Chinese keyboard works. My old dog used to combine two signs to be a third word to save time.

I have heard it said that it's an expression of concern/anxiousness in dogs though, and if so, is Selina trying to figure out the whole 'if we (Selina and Beacher) are four legged furries who get fed and you are two legged upright clothes wearers who feed us, how are we _all_ animals? I do believe right from the start that Selina's intelligence in her syntax use and sentence structure has been above that of our expectations. I think she's asking a 'big' question here, not just confirming word usage.

Oh gosh, she knows DREAM now- the nebulous concepts were always hard for me to teach and I never did DREAM, holy cow...that had to be tricky to teach. It is so fascinating to see how she thinks. The more she learns the more fascinating it gets.

She has to associate each button to the word in her mind. To get her point across. I'm in impressed.

How did you model the dream word/button? How to explain to a dog the dream concept? Which other words did you used to construct the dream concept?

Ok i could be off the mark. But when she said "we family go" and then a lot of "upstairs" was mentioned, could this have been Bunny trying to talk about how her family moved house? The whole family went, and lacking any way to express that she means they left their old house and moved here, she refers to the new house as upstairs since they had to climb SO MANY STAIRS to get to it. Just a thought

How can Bunny tell the difference between Family, Friends and Animal? Whenever Bunny says "We Family/Friends/Animal", mom will say "Yes"!

My little cousin and I love bunny! She's so sweet and smart after bunny said poop me and my cousin had a 10min talk about different poop colors and sizes. bunny going to get her degree in education soon

Have you given her 'the talk'? Bunny is noticing the difference between males and females and how they interact. She has several times grouped Dad with Tango and her, Mom, and Selena. She is asking, what is the word for what we three are? The word is female- female animal. She also wants to know if she came from Mom and if not, from where? She wonders where babies come from, basically. Second, prepare yourself- they have biological clocks too. In another year or two she will start asking about having her own babies. My Chihuahua, who was also determined she was human like Mommy, not dog, went through this. She had a longing for being a mother, and this led to false pregnancies. Getting her spayed solved the false pregnancies, but it did not get rid of her emotional need to mother a baby. Female dogs and other animals have a need to mother- part hormonal and part emotional. I can tell you from experience, it's really hard to take that away from them, and then to help them grieve the loss of motherhood- and she will grieve. When she gets there, you might ask yourself if you can handle getting a puppy for her to mother. Would be interesting to see if she can teach the pup the buttons- I bet she would. If you could start with just saying Mom, Selena and Bunny are female it would help. Then show a picture book with a pregnant dog having puppies (they have them for kids). Teach her how it works. Take her around a pregnant lady or dog so she can smell the pregnancy and then again after the birth- the smells tell her the baby/pup came from the mom. Let her nose help you! But then, brace yourself for difficult questions! She may even want to know where her biological mother is. I went through this with a bird too and had to help her find a mate (vet said she'd die otherwise from the false pregnancies). Helping her form her own family and seeing her present her babies to me, as their 'grandmother' was mind blowing. Good luck to you with Bunny and her complex emotions. I can't wait to see what else she shares as she grows.
