Episodes like this from the first 4 or so series ensure Red Dwarf's immortality. This episode ("Marooned"), for example, relied almost entirely on brilliant comedic dialogue alone . . . Genius
Actually, from what I read, it wasn't actually dog food Charles ate. It was actually tuna mixed with meat jelly to look like dog food. Charles stated that it tasted so bad, he might as well have just eaten dog food.
I would try dog food (especially if I was starving) just to see what it would taste like, dog treats too, I have tried these chewy dog bar treats and they tasted very nice.
One of the biggest questions I have about the dog food is this: How come, after 3 million years, they suddenly have a can of dog food, and for that matter, wouldn't it have gotten moldy? They weren't allowed to have pets on board Red Dwarf, so why would they have a can of dog food there? Why not cat food? It could have belonged to Lister's pet cat he had and just frozen for 3 million years.
Huh,I could theorize that the dog food could've been brung on board and possibly would only be eaten in the case of emergency if the crew had no other option regarding (the) food source/sources (other than canabilizing the other crew members on ship, but in regards to which in since lister and Cat are the ONLY human-OR-slash-human like carbon-based beings still residing on the red dwarf ship that aren't holographic nor androidic-meaning/referring to Rimmer,Kryten and/or the AI system holly in this sense actually-and I don't think Dave lister wouldn't really want to stomach that of the Cat,and the Cat wouldn't want to eat lister either..) that are readily available..and since the ship has been in space for a long time, some of the many sustenance-based supplies may-of not been at all consumed by lister and/or the Cat not all that much,really.. And besides,if the dog food (or unwanted canned food that was stored in the ship's containment/stocks) hasn't been opened in years since it got obtained on ship hasn't gone bad,why would it warrant worries about mold..? Lister would've had to test if it was still papable anyways-also,like I stated before, the ship would've had stocks of canned goods to at least last a bit of a lifetime, regarding the conditions,eh..?
Huh,also the thing about lister's cat and the aforementioned dog food then..? Hmm,maybe lister's cat wasn't a picky eater also..anything goes,right..? Eh..?
You also have to ask yourself these questions, even though they are in this Marooned episode, but not in this particular clip: Rimmer smells the camphor wood after Lister burns part of the trunk. Rimmer touches a button to call for help. Rimmer is able to open a cupboard to find a can of dog food. Rimmer tastes gum ointment and says it has a minty flavour. How can Rimmer smell, touch, open something, and taste if he is a hologram?
Holograms can smell, if ship sensor can pick it up. Yeah, that is a fuck up. Did he pick it up or just found it? I dont remember from the episode that Rimmer opened the cupboard, he can phase through. Well, he could have tasted it when he was alive, not necessarily as hologram.
You could literally eat the styrafoam cup they came in and not notice any difference... granted as a kid in the 80's it wasnt the taste, but just the novelty of microwavable noodles in a pot in less than a minute. Was like a sci-fi kinda thing, Ooooo technology!.. space age freeze dried foods... yeah still they were pretty crap, they've gotten better though thats for sure, but still not a patch on real noodles.
112Bluestar For backup food stocks in the case of emergency. If a majority of the food sources have been (rather) reduced to more or so less than canned non-persishables and/or dog food, and you're hungry and that's what's readily available on hand-what are you gonna do? Eat the canned dog food/pet food,or perish/suffer/die from malunutrition and hunger then? It's common logic regarding survival even if you're only reduced to dog food or other food-based things..duh. Eh..?.
I never understood that about Red Dwarf, I know it's just a comedy and there's a lot of continuity issues and whatnot lol, but why do they think they're the only people left? And why do they think the books also died out with them? Books dont self combust!
The idea isn't that the human race itself has died, although, given how warlike we are as a species, it's stated we may have wiped ourselves out. It's assumed that, in the 3 million years that Lister was frozen in stasis, what were humans would likely have evolved far beyond recognition as humans, and that, in the 3 million years it will take to get back to Earth, they'll have evolved even further - in the same way that, in 3 million years, the cats evolved into something beyond recognition as cats. So Lister may not technically be the last human, but he would definitely be the last of his genus. I know this is an old comment (I'm so sorry, I hope you don't mind), but I hope you can come back and enjoy the story - all those details are actually very well thought out (:
