When someone's explanation is simple and easy to understand- they really know the craft. Hans' default is truthfulness and honesty. I look forward to each and every episode. I wish I were closer, I'd be a regular.

So true. Default setting needs to be a good demeanor towards people, until the moment comes to not be.

Bless u Hans. Cartouche hexer the dog you helped me find was a lover and a killer on command. Diffuse ! Totally. He went everywhere with me constant companion. Airport , restraunt, planes, Home Depot, he loved to shop and greet ppl. But he would flip to personal protection in just a hand movement That was the early training ! Ty. Hans. ❤

I'm curious as to your interpretation of a fearful vs cautious dog. I have an 8 mo Boerboel that from the moment i got her at 13 weeks has been what i would consider fearful in new experiences and with unkown people. She does not want attention from strangers, is not aggressive but will be on guard or back away from interaction. I worked extensively on neutralization, and she's gaining confidence. Now, if we are outside on our property and a stranger approaches, she will go forward and alert/bark. I was advised when she was assessed at 15 weeks that she is not a PP candidate. Im ok with that, as her physical attributes make her a huge deterrent, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Is there a tangible difference between caution and fear? How does that translate in approaches to training? Learning much from your podcasts!

Cautious or aloof dog has a great potential for protection if the dog is trained correctly through defense drive. I am selling videos on that topic at alpinek9real.com Many protection-based prey drive trainers do not understand this or in error outright reject it. As far as your dog goes I would have to see it on my own but I will say this. If your dog is not ready for the scenario and you are 'making' it to deal with something he is not ready to deal with, then you may be making the situation worse. I am often using this example. If I lock you in a cage with a tiger - then are you going to stop being afraid of that tiger. Obviously not. The Boerboels are naturally suspicious and defensive protectors so that is where your extreme suspicion of your dog is coming from. I would need to know it means when you say that you "worked extensively on neutralization" means. What I would suggest is that you use my OUT of drive obedience (NO treats NO toys rewards) and teach that way you teach the dog to look up to you for guidance. You will find the video on my alpinek9real . If that does not solve the problem then you need to use the system of 2 stresses. Imagine that you are afraid of heights (Stress A) Just imagine that you are terrified of heights, which fear is induced in you by the high elevation of the location, THAT YOU are TERRIFIED of heights is stress "A" and you are in the front yard of a cabin which is build in high. Now-> A tiger is coming at you and wants to kill you. That is a stress "B". Stress "B" (the killing tiger) most definitely overrides your current fear of heights (Stress A) which is a stress that you are trying to eliminate from your psyche. So as you are fighting a tiger you disregard/forget about heights fear (stress A) because the REAL and PRESENT DANGER at that moment is the tiger (stress B). Let's say that you are victorious and kill the tiger or get away from him, and thus eliminate stress B and all that WHILE you have had no fear of A (heights) or did not consider such fear at that moment. Then such "not considering" of stress "A" then extends into the future when we encounter heights after the stress "A" is not present because it was overridden by dealing with stress B(tiger). This - not considering the heights (stress "A") then STRONGLY carries into a time when stress "B" (tiger) is not present anymore thus virtually curing the problem of "A" - fear of heights. I guess one may say what to be afraid of “A” (heights) now when i was not afraid of it when under stress “B”(the tiger) carried into the rest of your life. So in the same way with your dog. When the dog is afraid of something like a person (Stress A) apply and demand performance in OUT of drive obedience like a down command (Stress B) when you make the dog perform let's say down command when under stress A then the stress A becomes irrelevant in that situation and since it is irrelevant in that situation that it becomes irrelevant in the rest of the dog's life. (This needs to be repeated several times.

@@hans-alpinek9real THIS is the missing link I have been searching for. Your explanation makes perfect sense, and I can see that I need to learn more about defense drive. As far as the primary and secondary triggers/stressors...I understand conceptually, and will need to work on learning how to apply that in different circumstances. As far as working on neutralization, for example, at the beginning, she would move to the off side when walking past people in order to avoid any potential interaction. So I started moving to the off side in advance to provide some distance as she gained confidence and gradually decreased the distance until she was able to walk by others unaffected. I would put her in a sit or down stay several feet off a walking path as people were walking by and I gradually increased my distance during the stay, and then decreased her distance from the walking path as she became more comfortable/confident. As of now, she can walk in close proximity to people and in groups, and sit calmly while I'm visiting with a stranger, although I do not allow people to approach her or touch her because she will back away and avoid, and I do not want to reinforce that behavior, nor escalate it. I gradually increase stressors and only advance once we have mastered a step at a time, so as not to overwhelm. My own instinctual feeling (not based in experience or great knowledge in the subject) is that she would do well in protection, though not in sport (which is all I've found in my area). I cannot express how grateful I am for your response and knowledge. I feel I can now focus my learning and training in a way that will most benefit my dog. I will be exploring the video you mentioned. Thank you.

Command has to align with threat analysis as well. There's instances where commands cannot be uttered, so balance is uppermost. Gagging abductions, etc. Muzzles can also be used for acclimation.

I personally have my dogs totally silent when someone is at the door when Im at home. Im not deaf. (all breeds) When I'm out thers warning bark and deep growl. As for working K9 security you often have advantage of being stealth, until you don't have to be. Shock n Aw gets get ppl off balance instantly.
