Such a brilliant and informative podcast. Thank you Stephanie for confiriming everything I am already sharing with my clients and I learned quite a bit more from this podcast as well. Thank you Charlotte for bringing this to us, look forward to your next episode.
I was a veterinary art rep for Hills Pet Nutrition… for 34 years. I was trained by board certified vet nutritionists and trained vets and their teams in their hospitals. Much of what this nice lady says is true but much a board certified nutritionist would disagree with. The key to nutrition is delivering optimal levels of nutrients to maintain health. Nutrition science also allows us to use specific nutrient levels to manage diseases like kidney disease or urinary stones, etc. she is right when she says an unbalanced raw diet is worse than any commercial food. That is so true. There are many commercial foods with unbalanced and excessive mineral or protein levels but many raw homemade diets are also extremely unbalanced.
I cook for our dog most days. He gets the fresh meats and veg we eat. Being an older, rescue dog he was in poor health but at around 12 years old, the vet said he's never been healthier.
Our dogs always lived in to their late teens, and our cats into their twenties, because we fed them as nature intended. No Biscuits, no tinned food, lots of raw meaty bones for both animals! Oh and apart from having their ops for de-sexing and first injections, they never visited vets!
Old Micks Smithfield Red healer Boof died a couple weeks ago, he was only 6 years old, riddled with cancer. About a year ago I was wrestling Boof when all of a sudden he yelped when I grabbed his für at the top of his neck, I asked Mick what was wrong there with Boof, he replied that's where he's been chipped. I then just touched Boof on that spot lightly, he pulled away quickly. I suggested to Mick let's cut it out of Boof, but Mick was hesedent to do so. I mentioned to Mick that from research I have read, that there is lithium in the chips & they can leak causing alsorts of problems. RIP Boof old friend 🐕
wow good video I am doing everything wrong thinking that I was doing the best for my dog by ditching the kibble and going raw but I get them from food store supermarkets, any red meats, chicken leg quaters, sandrines, chicken livers, chicken gizzards to name a few. I feel like this might be my last dog because caring about health for my dog is stressful and a lot of work and money lol but I still don't want to return to kibble.
Thanks for commenting! It's great that you're putting in so much effort to ensure your dog's health. It sounds like you're already doing a lot of things right! Getting those meats from the supermarket is fine if it's just the meat from other human-grade food. The one to watch out for is the specific "dog mince" in the refrigerated section, as it contains that specific 22 preservatives. Remember that doing your best to provide a healthy diet for your dog is what matters most, even if it's not perfect. You're clearly a caring and dedicated dog owner, and your dog is very lucky to have you!
Wow, very helpful podcast confirming many things I'm doing right and wrong with my dogs diet. My 3yo intact German Shepherd bitch is very fit and strong, never had a health problem, but she loves smackos treats and will do anything for them, so I feed her way too many everyday. I'll check out your other pods to see if any information about long term effects of this particular product.
@HotSpur. thanks for commenting!! So glad you liked the episode and found it helpful! We don't have an episode in particular on schmackos treats but we'll keep that in mind for a future episode!
@@DogPodcastthere's so many pet food products available on supermarket shelves, these days, it would be very interesting to see a nutritionist walk through the isle to give a quick rating of each product. Not sure the supermarkets would appreciate it, though. But most dog owners want a quick, affordable, healthy diet for their dogs, so it would be very interesting to know if it's possible from the pet food isle. But good work, I'll check out your other pods soon.
My 🐕🐾 loves, chicken 🍗 so I give him chicken with his food everyday! And yes!! I agree dog food is no good for doggies! It does cause problems with their stomachs.
Dr Shawn Baker interviewed an old school vet who trained in the 1970s. He said dogs are carnivores and should only eat raw meat. Dogs are not meant to eat grains or vegetables. Dogs fed raw meat have perfect teeth, no need for cleaning. Wolves in the wild eat raw meat and have perfect teeth. Dogs are from the wolf family.
I give the dog kibble out of pure convinience, then gets raw food at night. Easier to spread it out over the day. It would be so helpful of there was a written and honest guide what to look for and avoid. Its a shame kibble is so tainted with marketing, there are probably some good honest brands out there. Hard to find.
This is a great idea! And as Steph says feeding as much raw as you can with your kibble is great because your dog is still getting some real food. Fantastic idea about the article, what sort of things would you like to see in it?
Brazil nuts have a lot of selenium in them. A person shouldn't have more than five, so I'm not sure a dog should either. More than 5 in a day ongoing can cause selenium toxicity in humans.
