So you both did that in one hour? It's amazing how you can read these dogs! It's tough to find "educators" like you who can do what you do. Wish you could do an event in St. Louis.

I was anti-"shock"collars because of what I've heard others say. You changed my opinion when you said in other videos that you use a "buzzing cell phone" kind of pressure that's not painful, not even like a static shock. TY for what you do & sharing it in these videos.

Damn.... what a HUGE difference between balanced and positive training, and I started watching Zak first. What I can't believe the other trainer told this lady to walk her dog at MIDNIGHT 🙄🙄 doesn't that just mean the trainer couldn't train this dog? This owner could've done midnight walks even without going to the trainer. Crazy really. So glad Tom was able to help her. Only after owning a reactive dog myself I realise how much debate there is over dog training and how pure positive reinforcement training will never work for dogs like that. I really really wish people are more educated in this aspect. And they should STOP spreading rumours that choke/prong collars are used as torture devices what the hell! I'm using a choke collar and this lady asked me if I choke my dog using it like what?! My leash is always slack because of the training I've done with my dog and I can assure her and I bet that her normal collar has more pressure on her dog's neck than my choke collar cos her dog pulls 🤦🏻‍♀️

Here we call it a check chain and pinch collar respectively. I haven't had anyone try and berate me for using a check chain yet but if they do I'm going to say they're welcome to try walking my 90lb+ 12 month old GSD on a flat collar stuffing cookies in his mouth and see how that goes lol. They'll just get dragged down the road!
@braden6773
@braden6773 3 года назад
@@eemmzzz If you still need the check chain after 12 months to avoid getting dragged down the road. He is just behaving for fear of punishment. I'm not sure that is much better than only behaving when there is a reward. In both cases you are screwed if caught unprepared.

This girl is amazing and how all dog owners should be. When you brought a dog into your home you also brought the responsibility of giving them a great life. I admire that for years she has been learning how to provide a better life for her dog. So many people would go to one trainer then give up when the dog's behavior is not fixed. It just makes me so happy that she cares so much for her family member she will go to multiple professions in order to better her relationship with her dog. Parents take their sick child to multiple doctors until they receive the correct answer and this is what she has done. Makes me so happy.

I use a prong collar and and the mini educator ecollar on my 10lbs Yorkie mix. Especially with small dogs, people think these tools are a no go because they’re so cute and smol. My little one went through 14 sessions, all 1:1 with a balanced trainer. People criticize me about the tools I use, but I’m learning to not care. He now can be off leash because of his reliable recall. *cries in Yorkie*

I’ve seen great strides with my one year old newf with ecollar! I will admit I like your way better than what I’ve been taught. They told me say come, no come tap the collar.but it doesn’t always work Today I had him off leash said come, held it down(on a 5) he immediately turned and came, as soon as he turned I released. At least I think I recall that’s your method 🤔

Tom, I cannot express how much your videos have helped us. My dog is a large, fearful shepherd mix that we rescued with no knowledge of his reactivity. After three years of endless struggling, nightmarish walks, and being brought to tears questioning whether or not I should even own a dog, I found your videos. Omaha is now a confident, calm boy who can walk past other reactive pups with not so much as an growl. You saved our relationship, and I can’t express enough how much it means to me to not see my dog so terrified all the time. We can both enjoy our walks now, and he’s starting to make new friends. Thank you so much for spreading your knowledge.

People say a dog listens to that because he's afraid. HAH! If he was afraid, he sure as hell wouldn't be so calm around something that usually makes him afraid. He'd be worse, not better. Lovely job. I've been soaking it up and learning so much!! Did you know the guy from the channel Fenrir Canine Training says he idolizes you? Thought you might like that. He seems to be quite the respectable trainer, as well. I'm training my own dog for Agility competitions, but I would like to get his Good Citizen certification first. Thanks in part to you, it's going swimmingly, and I know how to build the engagement I'm going to need to keep him listening to me in a competition situation. Thank you!!

Your videos have helped me SO MUCH with our reactive, fearful dog. I had a local trainer come and she was so disgusted with me for using the prong collar. God I need tom to help with my corgi. Hes so hyper and reactive. Insecure. Hes been rehomed and wasnt walked the first year of his life. He just turned 3 and weve made great progress but I realize watching this series I have to work on the relationship and positive reinforcement without treats. Weve done training and obedience classes, but it's not fixing his behaviour. Hes only listened for treats.. I have to make him feel secure. March break (next week) I'm off all week and lm going to work my ass off using these methods to give him the security and confidence on a leash.

I like this video but disagree in the fact that a strong foundation for obedience is food!!!! I always start out with food. This doesn’t mean all behavior can be thought with food alone! You can absolutely clicker train a dog to calm down. I will still use ecollar or prong. It’s just a tool just like food. Also know your dog!!! I’ve had my dog for less than 6 months and when I got him at 8 months he didn’t even know how to walk on his leash. Now he off leash heels and I have never used a prong or e collar. I am going to use e collar in the future but I always pay my dog. He is training to be a service dog and he still has issues to be fixed but his temperament is everything!!!

I have a service dog in training at the moment and while clicker training, shaping, and positive training has worked for the majority of our skills, we still struggle with reactivity when other dogs aggress at us. Obviously, it’s reasonable for my guy to react when dogs bark and lunge at us but it’s something that cannot happen when he’s working. I can’t always bail but being able to get him past the dog and break the spell with a quick pop works much better and eventually, hopefully we can work through it. Thanks Tom!

I get a bad rep for being a balanced trainer for behavioral therapy and reactive training. I don't use electric shock or prong collars. Everyone just assumes that anyone who is balanced is abusive but that is far from the truth. It is realistic. What dog owner at home (non trainer) is going to be only positive reinforcement and always have treats on them at all times? no one. Balanced training is the most realistic training method for the average dog owner and it also works. I rather show results than have someone pay me weekly for 2 years to hardly make progress.

Also I can record my voice to the system, I can use my voice recording to train my dog, say goodbye to the traditional beep sound for good. So far it seems really effective. All I do is pressing the voice recording button to correct my dogs behavior. We hardly have to use the shock setting.

I use an e-collar when I am in an environment where it may be dangerous for my puppy or others. He is a 4 month old gsd and sitz, plots, wait (stay), look at mama (lol) and delivers Mrs Reids(94 year old) newspaper. He is socialized with people and other animals, loves the cats. I use 95 percent positive and 5 percent e-color. He lays down at starbucks at my feet. I have MS and get severe flairs so I needed to get him behaved early. Don't get me wrong, he still does puppy things, like putting all of his toys in the toilet when I go outside briefly without him

Her dogs make cute silly tricks, but would run on her, or fail to do tricks when she wants to do a demonstration (cuz they are distracted with sometihng else) and when she gets dificult cases she always deflects as soon as the dog proves to be difficult to work with treats. I have NO respect for her, and she gets anoyed that I use wht word NO with my dog. Dude, my dog freeze when I tell them NO and stop running and yours run off of you! STFU haaha

Can a dog learn how to socialize properly? I work with a rescue who will run straight up to any dog with relaxed body language and then IMMEDIATELY freeze up nose to nose. It’s like he wants to go play so badly, but once he gets there he doesn’t know what to do and caused other dogs to attack and it’s caused him to attack due to redirection

1. Would love some bumper stickers in the merch store. 2. You don't actually train dogs, you train people. The dog is just along for the ride LOL

I occasionally watch some strictly positive like that Zach guy. He seems like his a nice guy and all but he still seems to struggle at times with his new pup after a year still ! Shouldn’t a trainer gave a train dog themselves? Love your channel, learning so much everyday!!🤗

Before i knew much about dogs, i studied psychology. When i went looking for a trainer, i refused to work with anyone that said "it all has to be positive, all of the time." That mentality can only be maintained alongaide a healthy disregard for reality.

I am learning SO much from you and have a question. We have a tiny, reactive dog (toy fox terrier) with a collapsing trachea so she HAS to use a harness, but can't feel any feedback from me with her current harness. Is there one you recommend for her? Thank you!

There are bad and good trainers on both sides of the argument. If you dont like singling out people that use a different style then dont. You even say it in your videos, every dog is different, every owner's comfort and capability is different. what works for one may not work on another for a variety of different reasons. what maters is the dog and owner's well being. And I personally think this whole pointing fingers and blame is getting in the way of that. Corrections done inappropraitely can tramatize a dog, poorly exictuted possitive reinforcement can create an unmanageable dog. but done correctly and humainly both can foster an amazing relationship between canine and owner. Education, and understanding is key, and the fastest way to loose both is to say your idea is better then everyone else that does something different.

"Hhe warned me about you and then fed him three sticks of cheese..." Lady sounds more delusional and dangerous than most shock collars
@bagheera2057

It's hard to understand your way of training if you grew up in a country where shock and prong collars are forbidden but dogs still behave well. All a dog needs is discipline, structure and spending a lot of time with the owner. If this is possible when the dog is still a puppy, there shouldn't be any problems. So it's hard to understand why people need harsher methods when they own the dog since it's a puppy and it's not a rescue who needs special care because it had such a miserable life.

Henry reminds me of my dog. They just don't know how to react in social situations. They are kinda scared, nervous, unsure and just doesn't trust the other dogs. Give them some time with some good interactions. He'll come around :)

Could a 2.25 herm be considered for a 100lbs dog? Wondering if you loose correctiveness with larger mm sizes Or is it too much pressure for a small point on such a heavy dog?

I really like the way you figure out the best way to train each dog. I have wasted a year doing mostly positive traing on my leash reactive beagle. I have also tried other trainers where they tell me I have to be the alpha and the dog needs to be scared of me. I live in Korea, where if I use prong collars or e collars, I am uneducated and I'm abusing my dog. I just ordered my first HS prong collar and a vibrate e collar online. I hope this will help with my stubborn over reactive beagle.

I believe there are dogs that can be trained with purely positive dog training. But there are lots of dogs that don't respond well on purely positive training methods. My dog is like that, and after positive training become popular I tried it on him. Keep in mind that he was 8 year old, well behaved dog that knew lots of tricks...2 moths in only on purely positive training he become unbearable... And I agree with what you said in the video. Most of purely positive trainers are biggest reason why dogs are being left in the shelter and euthanized. I live in EU where shock and prong collars are illegal, choke collars are legal but most of the pet stores are not selling them anymore and you will be attacked on the street as a dog abuser...and yet nobody cares that dogs are being euthanized and that more and more people are having problems with their dogs.

Nopea bb there’s without a doubt you can train a dog using it but 99.9% of that time is teaching new behaviors not fixing them.

You are not supposed to pull with the prong collar. You have to pop it quickly right when the dog starts to focus too much on the other dog and you have given the dog a heel command and didn’t listen to you.
@BtsurvLT

@@marinodejesus8024 I don’t get to pop it. She lunges and no way to pop it she’s choking herself
@marinodejesus8024
@marinodejesus8024 3 года назад
@@BtsurvLT You have to establish a heel,sit command first without any distractions. So she understands that is she doesn’t heel when told there are consequences. Once she gets that down 100%, get someone you know with a dog and work your way up from a distance 100ft, she pays too much attention to the dog then *pop. Once she ignores the dog praise her. Then bring him closer and repeat. It works. I trained my cousin’s pit bull like this and he has no problems at all now. Also make sure the collar is sitting on the top of the neck not close to the chest.

I can’t seem to keep my dog engaged and she never seems to even look at me when we are outside. How can I get her to be more engaged outside? I even try calling her back to me and walking back and forth to get her back in the heel position which does work, but just no real engagement.
@angelinagutarra5268
@angelinagutarra5268 4 года назад
@michelle Powell you should practice recalls in your home then when the dogs is ready or you are ready take the dog outside to a quiet environment typically in the mornings or at 12:30 or one whatever works for you. Then little by little get your dog to focus on you by saying here, up pointing your finger by your eyes. If you like you can also get a clicker that’s used for dog training and whenever the dog does something good you click and reward. Over time you will want to start weaning off treats. Good luck hope this helped:)
