The most helpful thing I learned from this video was to "stop talking" (i.e. not necessary to say heel) until behavior is learned. So simple but it makes a lot of sense!

Ditto! This is helping me so much! I have a great dog but she just barks at some people and not others and I don’t know why. She’s great with other dogs but I now know to correct her when it comes to the humans. She doesn’t stop barking until they pet her, which is weird bcs I don’t think she realizes how scary she sounds and how barking doesn’t make people trust to pet her, even though that’s what she wants. It’s friendly barking but it’s annoying. These videos are really helping me.

Your one of the only transparent trainers I've seen on RU-vid. I love the video breakdowns. Helps us understand our 11month old gsd female even more. She is highly leash reactive only to other dogs and has now become aggressive at the dog park. Hoping these videos will help her overcome these obstacles. Thankyou for your content.

You deserve more subscribers and views. This was an incredibly helpful video. I've a very stubborn dog who likes to test limits and a closet full of training tools. After watching a lot of training videos and trying various methods this is the only thing that with such a simple trick made me be able to walk my dog with any speed, even jogging and past other dogs outside without her pulling to the side, ahead, lunging from reactivity issues or anything else, with just 2 corrections at the start of the walk. It's been a while since it was that nice to go out on a walk with also a significantly more relaxed dog that was now actually paying attention to where she was walking and where I was going. And I can't stress this enough, I have a dog who since a puppy has always wanted to be first. No matter what she could not handle walking next to others or behind or she'd put up a show that would go on for hours.

I've watched a few of your loose leash walking vids and I think this is one of the very best. You do a very good job of explaining to the client what you are doing, why, and how to do it. I'm using this method with my 11-month old border heeler and I'm seeing great results.

Thank you so much for this video. I am looking forward to practicing these methods with my dog. I liked that we were able to see him progress through different scenarios and that you let us in on the conversation that you were having with the owner. I realized that since my dog does need to see me giving the cues that the people/dogs are ok. I really watched how you handled the leash lessons so I can try it out.

Thanks for making this video because I haven’t seen any addressing the desensitization process to people or dogs getting closer to us in general out there. Probably will watch this 10x today. I am studying this meticulously and determined to changing my dog from dominating my ability to socialize with others on my walk.

As someone who is so excited about this topic, I love hearing people educating themselves properly on their dogs and training info. A great trainer as well is Victoria Stilwell, she covers a lot of things other trainers don't, like at home problems. She does house training and out of house training. She is associated with the channel "It's me or the dog" and "E how pets". Hope I helped add some trusted sources to your list!

But I’ve always been told I’m an asshole. But watching your videos have given me confidence on how I have been training my dog. Also you’ve given me many tips with walking. I have spent £100's on several positive trainers in the last year on my 2 year old flatcoated retriever who lunges at every dog she sees wanting to play and gets so hyper. Since 6 months old she's had to go on a longline otherwise she would go into the distance to play with another dog. The last trainer wanted to put her in a halti and a harness and use a clicker. She is not food or toy motivated. Have been using your method for about a week , starting with no distractions and getting loose leash walking. The effect has been amazing. She is bonding with me more and even left her dinner half way through to follow me down the garden yesterday! Thank you!! Shame you are not in England 😔

She is so protective of me that no dog can come near me or I can not pet any other dog when sh eis off leash playing in the park. She acts the same exact way on the walk. I am already trying the sit/stay at the door but I need to implement the loose leash walking. I will also try the advice about when guests are over because she barks her head off when someone comes over. Great video!

Happy New YearJoel. I watched your video yesterday on protecting my dog from New Year's fireworks. Last night when fire works began around 7:00 she went into total panic mode, like she had last year. It wasn't over till 12:30 when it all stopped that she began to all down. I regularly take my dogs for walks, but upon your recommendation yesterday I took them out at 8:00. Didn't help at all. She's a 10 year old Boxer, very loving and obedient, but couldn't get her home quickly enough.- - Could you please do another video on fear of loud noises? She broke my heart last night! Would you recommend this same type of leash correction on a gentle leader (versus a front clipped harness) or would the force of it hurt the dog? Mine (65lbs) has the same type of reactivity when walking in public but strangely only sometimes. Sometimes it's calm and uneventful and other times the reaction is just like Chip at 10:38. Thanks!

I think Prince felt that he needed to test the dog what the dog would do if he goes to mom and get pet. Usually you guys would ask him to go and hold him to get pet but this time no, it was basically his choice to do so he felt the need to that and that was actually a trigger for the dog. Ptince is truly a helper dog.

@Eternal-Seven
@Eternal-Seven 3 года назад
Some dogs are not food driven, instead they crave attention. Tell them they're a good boy/girl, pet them. Most dogs grow out of the treat phase as they get older, or it becomes secondary, so just show approval when they do what you want them to do, and be consistent.

Wow this dog not only looks almost exactly like mine, but she acts almost exactly the same too! The only thing is she starts whining when we see other dogs approaching or in the distance (usually starting around 50ft away). I wonder what your opinion is on the whining? because I can see the anxiety building in her the longer I let her whine. Do I give a correction? Just ignore it? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I've been loving your videos!
@spiralpower2795
@spiralpower2795 3 года назад
I just found your whining video you posted about a year ago. So answering my question a bit there’s no correction appropriate for whining because my dog can’t control it, instead I need to change the emotion behind everything going on. So maybe once I let her greet more dogs and she get more comfortable with them she will whine less and I just need to be patient with the whining?

There is something unpleasant about the correction, or it wouldn't be effective in discouraging the behaviour. If it wasn't uncomfortable or punishing, he would keep doing it. To me it's just not fair to say that a prong collar or e-collar is so much more painful or scrambles the dogs brains as a blanket statement when those were some pretty forceful pulls on the harness. Depending upon how much pressure you apply on the prong or e-collar, both could be less forceful than what is shown here if you wanted them to be. The pull on the harness doesn't bother me, because obviously the dog is learning, but I just don't think your remarks about the prong and e-collar are fair. :/ I've seen so many trainers use them both in a thoughtful way that is no harsher than what you've shown with the harness.
@stevenpetrovich
@stevenpetrovich 9 месяцев назад
One thing to consider with prong or e collar is that there is an additional sensation on the skin that can add excitement to the correction whereas the gentler leader is just a strap that doesn't actually dig into your skin, it kind of just redirects the dog. I have used all methods though and really enjoy the regular collar/gentle leader approach. Especially with aggression.

Also, I noticed throughout several videos of yours that your doberman shivers in your presence. Edit: Also, jerking a dog on a chest lead harness is almost certain to cause arthritis in the dog shoulders and/or elbows in later life.

You are getting some information for free. These two people are keeping each other safe from covid. So now they have to believe in your decisions about health?

Specifically what would you have liked to see done differently? Or if you’re a dog trainer what would you have done differently?

It's hilarious that you spend all your time trying to explain to people that if you want a dog to listen to you, you have to be calm, consistent, confident and assertive. That really is 90% of it. That is not going to be easy for a lot of people, especially women.

Wow, really? Women? Calm, consistent, confident, and assertive is not exclusive to men, especially these days. Agreed that those traits in humans can solve 90% of issues with dogs but I know plenty of idiot dog owners of both genders. People who let their dogs walk out in front of them, bark at other dogs, pull constantly, jump, etc. It is not just women who struggle.

Really inappropriate. Has nothing to do with gender of owner.

@@gailking9355 I disagree, I think it has everything to do with gender. It's ok to generalise. Men are not the same as women and I have every right to my opinion, as do you. Have a great day 🙂
