A comment on Dog Tail Cactus shooting out tiny shoots caught my eye, and I decided to do this video offering my theory on this type of growth, and also asking for any info and experience you guys have to offer on why these guys do this sometimes!

I agree, I think it it the light. When I brought my rat tail cactus in for the winter and it had decreased light ( mostly artificial light) it etiolated. So, I hope it plumps out again this summer.

I'm so happy I came across this video! I got a little cutting of this like 2yrs ago and didn't know what it was. Almost killed it. It's super sad looking bug hanging on. I'm going to try to make it happy. Thanks for the information!

I'm so glad that I found your video. I have a dog tail cactus, and it has the skinny tips all over---actually, lush growth but skinny growth! Since I watched your video, I've moved the cactus to another window where it's getting at least two hours of full sun.I'm waiting to see what happens with this new move.

Yes! That’s what I was talking about! Those long thin ends and mine I are all full of roots. I experimented and place it under lights and it continued growing thin ends. Could be that they were in the side and didn’t get enough light but I’m not certain. Lynn from desert plants from Avalon suggested spraying them with rain water because they like more humidity. I did noticed they get dry and need more water than some other succulents. As soon as they are outside they stop doing it. They are in shaded area outside. Is it humidity, air circulation a factor too? Not sure but I think they like more moisture, especially because a lot of my dry plants root.

Succulent Living by Marija Johnson, that makes sense! I wasn’t thinking about the long skinny parts when I answered you before! These guys are epiphytes meaning they grow in more wet forested conditions attached to trees. So they don’t live in dry deserts. They can survive periods of drought when rains get sparse seasonally, but in general like a lot more moisture than true cacti and more than most succulents as well. These guys are more rain forest cactuses and are native through parts of Mexico and into South American and the Caribbean, so they definitely like more moisture and higher humidity levels than most. So the moisture thing could indeed be a contributing factor to this narrowing growth. These guys were in a very dry environment before I got them, and were bone dry when I purchased them. Being dry is fine, but not for too long, and who knows how long since they’d been watered. Usually you have to worry about plants being overwatered from big box stores, it’s sad the one time when they should have watered the “cactus” they didn’t! 😝. But it’s recovering nicely. So that’s ok. But please do let me know if the rain water helps the thin growth like this please let me know! And thanks very much for bringing this up, cause we need to figure out what causes it and spread the word! 😁

Ashley Glassman thank you? 😊 it probably helps that Michigan summer humidity is high and that plant becomes like a jungle. Grows a lot during the time that’s outside.

This is exactly what I was talking about with my monkey cactus, too! I got my monkey cactus this past August and I only water with rain water and he’s still doing it! The misting is a good question, I’ve wondered that myself and have also asked Lyn questions about care for the plant. She said to keep them dry in the winter so I didn’t water for about a month and this still happened. My gut was telling me it was thirsty so I have since given him a drink of rain water once a month. My gut is also telling me etiolation. I got a green house for Christmas and plan on moving him out there once this insane cold moves off. I’m in NC, for reference 😉

You are correct, it is etoliation and its caused by not enough light. There is a garden site by San Francisco Gate that discusses this and that you can prune and should prune it off.

crazy4cocoapuff, After these guys getting proper light at my house for a year, most of the thin etiolated stems actually filled out to normal size, but a few of them were too restricted and never filled out, and those I pinched off. I should maybe do an update on these now that time has passed. Thanks for the info, I couldn’t find it back then! Good to know my gut was right this time! Thanks for your comments and happy growing! 😘🥰🥰👍🏻

My dogtail cactus has the same growth on the ends...Those are aerial roots, which the plant would use in the wild to anchor itself to some kind of support to help it to climb upwards. They also can help to take up a little moisture. You can cut them off if you want, but they could indicate your plants wants a bit more water. These roots are used for climbing, so you can give it some bark, it will climb. Hope this helps answer your question about your dogtail 🌵
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 5 лет назад
Jacquelyn, thank you. Yes I’m very familiar with aerial roots, those weren’t the confusing part for me on this guy. I was particularly referring to how narrow the branches were at the end. On dog tail cactus They should grow out narrow, then slowly fill out to match the size of the leaves closer to the base. But this guy was continuing to grow out extremely narrow tips on its leaves, and wouldn’t fill in no matter what I did. Thankfully, it seems to have been needing more light, as now that they’ve been in a south window for a 6-8 months instead of the west window they were in, and got good sun over the summer they are now filling out and growing normally again! 🤗

in my opinion it might be sun light. i have a small one but compared to when i got it, its growing really quick and healthy, i water it once a week and sometimes i forget to open the window till 2 pm but at night i give them grow light from a bulb so they stay growing all my cacti is growing nicely, its only the succulents that give me problems so i just forgot the idea of trying to save all and focused on the ones that are actually gonna make it, i only have 3 succulents now and the rest is cacti and im just starting my colleection

Hello & Thank you for your video!! I've got a few questions & maybe a CPL ideas on the little shoots on the ends of the cactus.. mine has very fine shoots on the ends that have been cut off from when it was either in the store or from whomever owned it before & I think it's looking for a place to attach bc it has no place to grow on too!! I've actually pinched off a few & started another plant & there tallest one has those baby shoots, so I'm going to try & attach it to another in the plant to see if that will help?! Let you know later!! My question is: do you repot them to give them more room, if so when? How full/root bound? I heard you say they don't root at the bottom, so how full should they be in the pot?? I feel mine is too full, but idk..?

I cant find anything about it other then this video. I thought mine was getting enough light but maybe not cause it's doing that same thing. And it wasnt like that when I bought it but it was inside a some what dark store for a while when I bought it.... I'll put it in a brighter spot and see what happens. Thanks for the video!

I've got many, lol. They started out as one big one & I wanted to put it in a bigger pot, only the bigger pot wasn't big enough & instead of putting the plant they that all intense trauma again I just put the rest in different little pots, but I do believe the small pointy parts on the ends are from not enough light!! Like it was put to me by someone, is they adjust to wherever they are at the time..

I would also like to know how I can water them without them getting wet & drawing? I found if I don't water them around the base of the plans, then they'll shrivel up & die, so I am quite confused as to how to water these plants/cactuses & how often??

The one u said is “not normal”....it’s lacking light. 100% light issue. I keep mine on the porch in full sun but filtered. My screen porch filters the light. In my experience, those skinny spots will never get thick. It will stay that way...I cut it if I notice them which causes the stem to branch beautifully :) easy fix. If u give the dog tail enough direct, filtered light, u can double the size of that basket in one season. They grow crazy fast! I’m curious about your mouse tail. Is that one from eBay? (Photo with pink flesh due to sun stress....so pretty). I want to get one of those but I can’t figure out if it’s a rhipsalis horrida or if it’s really a mini version of the dog tail? (I have rhipsalis horrida and it’s different for sure....but I’ve never seen the mouse tail after years if growth lol. So my luck is I get one and it end up being just like my older rhipsalis as it grows)

I have a mouse tail rhipsallis and it is a rhipsallis. I've had it for about 5 or 6 years and it's one of my most favorite plants. I love all epiphytic plants and have several. I also have a dogtail and mine is doing the same thing. we have very cold winters where I live so it has to be inside in winter. BTW (I can only speak from my experience) I repotted my mouse tail about 3 years ago and it was very unhappy. I put it back in it's clay pot and it calmed down and did fine.

I didn't know I was supposed to mist them, bc it seems like every time I got moisture on it, they'd start too die!! I really would like to know if it's ok to put them on the patio or some place in the shade outside, bc btwn my mother & husband the AC is constantly running cold, so I don't want them to freeze??

Hello I have a dog tail cactus that has fallen down twice. A lot of it’s stems fell off after both falls. I bought it as a hanging plant but didn’t trust hanging it again after the second fall and gave it stationer in a plastic pot. As the stems grow back it’s shooting those skinny pieces out where it has mended the broken wounds
@mstamalaj

Is there anyway I can make it grow back fat again?

So if it grows hanging it don't shoot little ones out? I guess hang it, but separate it first!! If it keeps falling, then make new pots, just hanging ones!! Time to repot mama 🥰🤪

Jennifer Blankenship that’s okay! I actually have it hanging in a macrame hanger now on a clothes rack specifically for my plants where it won’t fall. It is right in front of my window. It has been growing back pretty well and I have realized that this cactus loves water. There is never a wrong time to water it.

@@mstamalaj that's awesome!! I went & bought 2 new plants from Walmart & didn't think to check them for bugs.. turns out they had mealy bugs, so I've been dealing with that little infestation & my cactus got caught up in the rain while they were all outside!! So I've been devistated thinking it was going to kill it!! I'm really pressing it'll be ok!! I've had to replant, treat, treat some more!! It's been rough, but I'm hoping they'll be ok & I lost the new ones already!!😢😢

yes, you can either touch the end of dogtail in Root tone then insert in the soil, Or put in clear jar or cup little water in front of window and root. Then you can add to a pot of soil once rooted. Good Luck.

@@jensb.9595 Jennifer mine also started to rot this summer as it was outside and this summer 2020 we've had a lot of rain. I think it just got too much water so I put it in a more sheltered place where I can control how much water it gets and it's starting to come back.

There suppose to but I've had mine 2-3 years and it hasn't bloom any flowers. I wonder if it's because those skinny ends. I just put very little water in mine. The Service Pups, mine do that when they get too much sun/not enough water. Keep in mind these are epiphytes and tropical cacti, not desert cacti, so they will get stress color like thanksgiving cacti, and orchid cactus. Hope that helps! ❤️
