Dog Training & Care : How to Train a Chihuahua 

i think its better to use a harness than a collar for chihuahuas. Ther trachea (neck) of the Chi is made up of rings of cartridge (not bone) and these are fragile.

The dog will learn the pattern, and jump to get pushed down so he can be pet... push them off if needed, but ignore jumping until he's calm. This might mean waiting till he's given up trying to get your attention. Then you can reward with a pet. Pets are currency like treats, only reward what you want. If you reward a jumping pattern, you'll get a jumping pattern. If he jumps, push him off and ignore for a while. They'll learn if you're consistent :)

Don't get a collar for your Chihuahua, get a harness. It's much better for their trachea - surprised this trainer didn't make the recommendation. As for getting a name engraved on a harness/collar, I'm not sure. Google "Drs. Fosters and Smith" and I'm sure that site might be of help. Good luck.

You should never use a collar and leash for a Chihuahua or any dog for that matter. It is 100% safer (and gives you more control) to use a harness that fits them correctly. My Chihuahua would choke herself to death if I used a collar and leash.

Its wrong all so very wrong.. nugging off isnt a deterrent. they think its playing. you have to stand up and ignore the undesirable behavior and reward them when they are doing what pleases you. :) and the leash not the best idea..

Why does he have a collar on this dog when he's aware of this breed's potential trachea problems? Chi owners, get a harness - my dog loves hers, much more comfortable, too.

i'm not so sure about your ability to train your dog when you have him on a leash. i've owned several dogs and i've never owned a leash. when we go for a walk they just follow me. i never taught them that. if they wander off i just call them. if you dog has the tendency to run away when he goes outside without a leash, he is probably unhappy and feels restricted and has no freedom. treat your dog with respect and you'll get respect back
