Doi Luang Chiang Dao, or Doi Chiang Dao for short, is one of Thailand's most awe-inspiring mountains. But ever since the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary has been recognized by UNESCO as a protected biosphere things are a lot stricter for anyone who wants to hike to the top and stay overnight. While the mountain has become much more difficult to access, it is not impossible, and jumping through the various administrative hoops is still very much worth it. In this video I explain every step, so you can plan your trip to one of Thailand's bucket list destinations.

Thanks a lot 🙏 Doi Luang really should be a bucket list destination for any outdoors lover, but getting there is so confusing nowadays! Hopefully this video brings some clarity 😊

I'm looking for more information on the Northern Thailand mountains. Is the booking period for this year in October'2024?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 3 месяца назад
Hello, thanks for taking the time to watch. The booking period is only officially announced at the very last minute, so I can not give a definitive answer. However, chances are that it will indeed be during October. The best way is to keep an eye on the reserve's Facebook page and follow up closely. Good luck!

Do you have to stick to the guide at all time? Do you wait for the guide to take you to the summit to see sunrise and sunset?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 9 месяцев назад
Nowadays there are no more private guides, however, there are staff along the route going up and down, who keep an eye out, who you can follow, and they also give some explanations. However, it is not mandatory to stick with them all the time. For sunrise and sunset, there is no need to wait for anyone. However, for the coming season the places are booked, so if you haven't reserved your spot, I'm afraid it's too late already. Thanks for watching the video 🙏

@@cnxtrailrunning One more question. I have applied for the hike already. How do you know if your permission document has been signed? Do they upload the signed document online?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 9 месяцев назад
@@user-zn2eb3cd5c I have not registered this year, so there may be some changes compared to last year. But normally you would indeed see whether you are approved or not when logging in on the site with your passport/ID number, and find all the necessary information there.

Yes, it's usually the last week of October, to start the season in November. But it sells out incredibly fast!

Hi, thank you for this awesome informative video! We've just tried to reserve the hike, and we filled out everything, but on the last page before payment we were asked to provide a 10 digit account number, so we couldn't use our international credit cards. Is there any other way to do a reservation for this hike? Perhaps to pay in person? Or maybe there is a way to pay online with international cards, not just thai credit cards?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 9 месяцев назад
Glad you found the video helpful. I have to say that I haven't signed up yet for this year, and I believe the account info is new. The payment however needs to be done by a bank transfer, a credit card indeed wouldn't work. What I would suggest trying is putting a random 10-digit number and wiring the money from your international account (this may cost extra though). I'm 99.99% Ure that the system does not do an automated check if your account details, so if you have proof that the money has been transferred, I think you should be good. Let me know how it goes, I'm interested to know more!

Too late to reserve for me now. Are there trails that at least get part way up that are open?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 7 месяцев назад
The actual Doi Luang mountain is really quite tightly monitored, and personally wouldn't risk it. There is a route on the website, relatively close by, and with some really nice views on Doi Luang Chiang Dao. You can have a look here: cnxtrailrunning.info/san-pa-kia-trail-running/

@@cnxtrailrunning Thanks so much! Also just realized your channel and site are dedicated to trail running! We are trail runners from the US and looking forward to exploring your trails!

Yes, that's right. The goal of the channel is to highlight Chiang Mai's main routes and give reviews about local races so others can prepare. Unfortunately I'm way behind on putting out any content. After covid it's back to my full-time job and family duties 😅 Anyway, there is also a website with routes: www.cnxtrailrunning.info, and a Facebook page and group which I put most of my time in now. Just search for "Chiang Mai Trail Running" and you should be able to find the logo. If you ever are in the area make sure to reach out, we've got group runs on most weekends!

Hello, I am looking to hike this in 2023- do you remember how many weeks in advance the Facebook page announced the booking window? I don't want to miss it and have been checking the Facebook page and website daily.

Hi, thanks for watching this video 🙂 I don't remember exactly, but I do remember it was quite last-minute. If I would have to put an estimate on it, I think it was about 1 month before the opening dates, and spaces sold out fast, especially on weekends. Good luck, it's really a special place!

I am thinking of climbing this year. If I have a private car, does it have to be a 4WD? Do they limit the number of passengers in your private car?
@cnxtrailrunning
@cnxtrailrunning 9 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for watching the video and taking the time to reach out. Just to be clear, everything about the trip is community-based, so you're not allowed to drive your own car up the mountain. You just have the choice to either share a car, or charter a car, which is what I meant with a private car. And yes, all the community cars are 4WD, really needed on some of the rougher sections. I hope that helps 👍
