Hey just to make you aware, Moto Guzzi have changes the oil quantity for the rear drive/bevel box. They now state to fill with 160cc of 75w140, instead of 180cc. It seems the fill hole was never a level hole in any case. Filling with over 160cc is known to have caused oil seal failure in the input side of the bevel box. This is for E4 and E5 models and as per the factory service manual. No one likes leaky seals!!!
As a fellow V85TT owner, I have enjoyed watching you videos on this bike. I have changed the transmission oil twice on my bike. Never touched the exhaust system. There is just enough clearance to get the drain plug out. I remove the bottom skid plate and put tin foil on the CAT/collector box to keep the mess down, (still messy though). Getting the drain plug back in is a bit of a pain to get the threads started but still much easier than taking apart the exhaust. I them measure 700 ml. And just pour it all in. The 2020 V85tt's don't have side oil level plug like the 21 and 22's.
@@cubbysue The various tricks to keep oil away from exhaust and engine casing are so common all over the Internet across all various bikes, but in reality oil is only good for these surfaces. Let it run off the exhaust with the greatest of pleasure and just give it a once over with a rag after you have finished. Results in a nice shiny cleaned exhaust, what else could one wish for.
i'll be winterizing my bike this weekend, decided to change the trans and final drive oils while i'm at it. this decision was made because i knew this vid was available. much appreciated, good sir.
Tomorrow I'm going to test drive one V85tt Travel, part of the reason is your channel: I really love the videos you made around how to do the mantainance yourself. I was undecided which motorbike to buy after 20 years of no riding a bike, and your videos helped :) If you ever going to come to Mandello del Lario let me know :)
For the final drive, while fillin oil, you can use the upper bolt for filling and wait till oil will come out from the middle one. Same as you did filling gear box. 3 holes in total (upper part, middle one and drain) Anyway thank you for so detailed video. Good luck
@Cubbysue, thanks so much for making these videos! I have never once considered doing my own mechanical on any motorcycle, but thanks to you I just fixed the rear shock squeak (I had it too), and today I ordered an oil change kit. I will not be paying the local dealer to change my oil again! Great tips, great inspiration... Not sure I'm up for adjusting the valves, but we shall see. Keep up the great work!
Just did my first oil change on my V85tt today at 1465 miles , thanks to your videos I felt confident enough to do it . Next is my gear box and final drive . My bike is the 2020 model and I seen videos where it was common for these bike to have low gear oil from the factory so I’m changing mine .also it was pointed out that some final drives once oil is changed that if filled at 180 ml that these final drives may leak, an updated recommendation of 160 ml to keep pleasure down and prevent leaking. I see your bike as the oil filler level plug on your gear box ,mine does not have that level plug so I will have to pre measure my gear oil before filling back up . Funny thing is my passenger foot peg was stuck solid , had to oil it 🤪 Thanks again my friend for another fine video ! 😃✌️🇺🇸
Those little pop-out funnel/filler things are common here in Europe, at least in my experience of various oils I've bought over the years, makes life easier, for sure.
I work for the USPS, and on a decommissioned Grumman LLV, I removed a rear cargo vent, cut it in half and made the perfect trough to drain the gearbox without removing the exhaust. If the exhaust is hot, just remember to wear leather work gloves.
Thanks. Did the shaft drive oil which was easy and the gearbox oil which could be managed without dropping the exhaust. The motul oil could be inserted into the gearbox via the level check. The gearbox oil hex nut could not be accessed without removing the crash guards.
Ya love doing valves but having to drop the exhaust and all that for the fluid changes probably going to leave the Big One to the dealer. Appreciate your videos! Helped me get my Givi engine guards on easily.
You don't have to drop the exhaust to do this. I was able to do it by using an aluminum foil "funnel", similar to the idea of the plastic bottle. But getting the bolt back in the bottom took some time and patience. Lowering the pipes would have made things easier to get the bolt in. Made me think of getting a cat-delete exhaust to have all the room I need.
yes, all of the V85tt's I've seen have one of the two air box cover openings taped over shut for some reason, either a flow restriction or noise deterrent...
…… Oh and I’m planning a de cat ASAP , that catalytic converter is right in the way! I have a really nice Arrow Guzzi slip on exhaust that was on my bike when I bought it with 129 total miles , I’m betting it will sound really good with the decat Y pipe 🤩 Cheers my friend! 😊
Well, that's put me off the V85TT. Dropping the exhaust to change the gearbox oil? Holy Moly!! I guess I'd suck it out with a vacuum gun. Excellent video though, much appreciated.
My rear pegs were stuck also. I lubed everything. I removed my exhaust to do my bike but kept it on for a friend's. It takes longer to take off but man it really messy if you don't.
Hi Brian, thanks for another fine maintenance video. I am a long way from that 18,600 mile service. but interesting. i’ve had my bike back from the shop for about a month now. back-and-forth for a while with the shop but finally Moto Guzzi agreed to replace the whole hub bevel gear. i’ll send you some pictures what the shop found in my hub. The good Lord willing I will definitely try to make some of the rallies next year. thanks again buddy.
Great Video, how did you figure out how to dismantle the bike to get to the air filter ? Can you do a video on the dependability of your Motor Guzzi? What was your reason for choosing a Motor Guzzi?
Thanks for sharing, it's very much appreciated and taken the time to record and upload your video. I get my new V85TT this week, Ye Ha Cowboy, sorry I don't know if that's the expression you use in your state, LOL
12k miles in 10 months aboard my 23 V85TT… replaced my BMW GSA.. .. bike has been bullet proof and a breeze to perform routine maintenance (fluids, filter, valve adjustment)….far easier than the latest $35k BMW GSA… thanks for your how to videos….
Goodmorning: About the measerement 2 liters is 2000cc you have to fill 700cc in your gearbox so you have left 1300 CC in your bottle. Greetings from The Netherlands
Have you experienced much valve clatter? I'm coming up on the second service. Adjusted valves correctly on first service but....I still get some valve clatter on warm days, usually on hard acceleration. Was wondering whether decat would resolve the issue to make the bike run cooler.
I did for a while, until I realized that the warmer the temperatures got, the more necessary it was to use premium fuel. I was getting what sounded like valve clatter but it was spark knock from low octane fuel I had gotten on a trip to Tennessee. Might try that and see if it helps, unless you already use premium....
Hi! Thanks for sharing all these works on the V85TT, but one question, do you have a problem with the givi tank bag? Doesn't the handlebar hit the bag? Because i have this problem. Thanks and ride safe!
No, never had a problem with that. This is the second Givi bag I've had on this bike and never had a problem with either bag. I ride this bike pretty aggressively up and down this mountain, dragging the pegs a lot and it has never interfered at all. I do have my bars adjusted up slightly higher than factory because they are more comfortable to me, maybe that has something to do with it.
Thanks very much for the nice tutorial. Once the guarantee of my V85TT expires I'll try to do my own maintenances and this kind of videos are really helpful for that purpose. By the way, you changed from the Euro4 to the Euro5 model. May I ask you why?. Well, thanks again
WOW, 18,000 miles. I have my V85TT for a year and half, used it for 2100 miles and the rest of the time has been at the dealer broken. Finally after trying everything the problem has been found. A bad voltage regulator connection. Yes, you've read this right. Anyway, the bike is on the road and I can finally enjoy it. I have 3 Guzzis. The V85TT even though has been a nightmare.....it is still my favorite bike. Here's a tip. They sell this giant syringes with flexible nozzles and they have volume indicators. They make them for cars, they are made for these jobs. The Cardan or rear differential oil could be changed at every or every other oil change. Very easy and cheap and it is a part that gets a lot of abuse. The weight for the trans is 90 and for the differential is 140. 140 may be a bit too heavy for the transmission but I've heard of people using it in hot climates. There has been some talk about adding a couple of drops of Molly just like the old Guzzis but some people say the oil can become too slippery and have bearing failures. I haven't used any on mine during the first service. As far as the air filter goes, there's enough room to move the battery out of the way while still connected however, why struggle with it, it's only two screws. I noticed a difference between the garbage AGIP or ENI that Guzzi recommends. I use ONLY MOTUL on all my bikes, all the Guzzis, Aprilias, KTM and BMW. Go with the best and forget the rest. By the way. The Cardan oil volume has been revised to 180ml instead of 200. Some V85TT came overfilled and some underfilled. 280 is the correct amount and if overfilled the oil will come out the vent and straight onto your tires, therefore, be precise. The Guzzi tech recommended to use the side vent for adjusting the level....but I think that it may be a bit too much. Well, today I rode the bike to work and put some miles on it, I changed the transmission oil and from start to finish it took me about 20 minutes. I have engine guards installed but also the Y pipe. NOTHING to remove. 2 bolts, 700cc of fluid and done. Without the Y pipe.....well we know, we all watched the video....hehehe
Thank you for sharing your shop and experiences! Proud 22 v85 owner. Question. Can you share the pannier rack tool box with us? Thanks man.. keep it up
Hello Cubbysue- I just finished the 6k mile service on my own thanks to your videos (including the valve adjustment- lifting the fuel tank made a world of difference). I have a nebie question: how the heck do you adjust the clutch? The only adjustment I see is the adjusting screw near the clutch lever. The manual is confusing to me. fyi-I have about 4-5mm of play where the manual says it should be 2mm. thx Oh, I sent you an earlier comment re: decating the exhaust. The dealer told me it wouldn't void my warranty. So I replaced the stock with an Arrow header/y pipe keeing the stock muffler. It did reduce the heat enough so that it's tolerable. Occasionally I do get decel pops. I'm considering a v twin boost or upmap to help resolve it. Thx Jim
Hello @cubbysue, while trying to find out where my TDC is, I left a piece of my chopstick in my bore. I was lucky and managed to find that out. However , I do not have any of torque specifications to assemble my head and assembly which MG calls camtower back toghether. I saw, that you had a book, could I ask you where I can get the book? Is there those torque specs please? it would help me very much. Thank you. V,
Oh, forgot...re the oil change...are you able to reset the service light yourself? or like the Aprillia 660, are you required to take it into the dealership to reset that light? thanx
@@cubbysue ya, that's poor...that puts me off something like that...ktm 890 adventure r you can reset yourself manually just fyi...hey can ask your thoughts on a possible d-cat for this guzzi model...?? would you see a downside?
Love the videos. Just purchased a New (old stock) 2022 V85TT. Just wondering how you reset the service light? From my understanding, you need the PADS OBD2 system to reset the light which means a trip to a dealer.
hola colega, muy claro tu video.gracias, esto me ayudara hacer yo mismo el mantenimiento de mi v85tt.abrazo motero y saludos desde necochea,Argentina.buenas rutas y pocos vientos
Just did the final drive change, moved forward to do the rest and I can’t find the fill plug. The drain plug is underneath just as shown on your bike, but that’s it. Where the hell is the filler plug on my 2019?
Hi, any idea how to reset the service spanner icon? seems it's a dealership job or can it be done with an obd2 scanner? if so any recommendations for one that works?
@@cubbysue Apparently you need to connect both to OBD and the USB to reset. I read this on a thread where a TEXA system was used and they figured this out in the end. (The TEXA came up with cannot connect when only talking to OBD). But then you can always change the meaning of the "spanner" symbol in your own mind: This owner knows how to use a spanner 🤣. thanks for your gread vids
Hello. It's been a while since he posted any maintenance videos on the V85TT. Don't you have it anymore? Greetings. (I hope I have written this text well with a translator since I don't know English).
@@cubbysue Then I will be watching when you make the new videos to enjoy the images of your new travel companion, the reviews you perform and the accessories you install. It's a shame that I don't know English to understand their detailed explanations, but I still learned a lot. This is a motorcycle that I really like and when I retire mine it will possibly be the one to replace it. Greetings from Spain.
ALWAYS measure the final drive oil!!! You need 140cc (4.75oz) NO MORE" Putting too much can cause a seal failure and pi$$ oil all over your tire while you're riding.
Hello Again; thanks for your helpful videos; they’ve guided me and saved me a lot of trouble on my service and mods to V85TT; have you had further thoughts on adding a Cat delete Y pipe and then possibly a Upmap tune or the Mistral V-booster plug to the ECU for cooler and richer running of the lean E5 set up; I have installed the Mistral y-pipe with the catalyst because contacting Mistral they assured me the y-pipe with and without the catalyst both flow the same amount of air. I am also going to change the end can to a MassMoto carbon fiber unit; I have installed the V booster plug for the time being and plan on doing the Upmap download down the road to make the bike run even better and cooler another suggestion by many V85TT Owners is to add the SAS delete kit for the secondary air; which reduces any deceleration popping and other issues; the y-pipe install would also make service under the bike so much easier and not cluttered. Keep up the good work on the videos and keep us updated on any other mods you perform. Thanks, John.
Salve amico Anche io ho una moto come la tua.. Hai dato l’aggiornamento della ufficiale della casa ultimamente? Moto Guzzi ne ha rilasciato uno che migliora molto le prestazioni 👍
Hello, regarding the double air slots on the air box, awhile back there’s a fellow V85 owner mentioned about his having one blocked off like yours. Mine is both opened. My guess is possibly to control airflow as our E5 is running borderline lean mixture. There maybe some advantage is covering one slot. Eager to give it a go
@@cubbysue I taped up one of the two vents on my air box yesterday. Ride to work this morning on the same route finding the bike runs smoother, responsive, less vibration, quiet, calm and most importantly detonation greatly reduced. My exhaust system and air filter is stock. Maybe too much air having two vents? I am looking forward to this afternoon riding home when the ambient temperature is warmer if the detonation at its worse reduces. Appreciate your videos, enjoying our passion.
Que tal si en lugar de hacer caer el escape para drenar la gearbox, usomos una jeringa grande y una manguera muy fina (transfusión de sangre 😀) y sacamos los fluidos por arriba sin desmontar nada, saludos desde Barcelona spain
Hopefully you didn't put 180ml in the diff? There are new version in the manual and correct amount is 160ml. Putting 180ml will flood the excess oil out in some time, when the diff gets hot. It is little bit dangerous, because the oil gets on the tyre. Ride safe!
Are you, or any other viewers, aware of any recommended shaft maintenance? (A La BMW GS). I’ve not read nor heard of anything…but wanted to open the discussion.
One thing of note is that you probably need to add a Molybdenum disulfide additive in the final drive oil. That would be why the original oil is so black. I have owned a couple of guzzis in the past and always added it.
How much do you put in there? I bought it, but never used it because some people said it is not needed with the synthetic oils and it can cause bearing failure due to slippage.
No, my Harley will just about set my pants on fire. This is way better. And with the cylinders sticking out the side, they flow more air over them, keeping them cooler.
The elecronics is the weak spot of this bike. My one lost the CC functionality after software updates ( done by the authorezed dealed ) 🤢🤢 - 3 months ago, and still NOT fixed ! Otherwise, this bike shouldn't be a big hassle to work on. You should get yourself a bike lifter - makes every bike-fixing a happy event....☝☝😀😀
