Doing This Broke the Kioti Tractor. A Costly Mistake!

You'd think a simple task like moving some logs wouldn't be too much of a task. Wrong. What should have taken about an hour took over two weeks to complete after we broke the Kioti CK3510SE tractor; a costly mistake.

I think it’s time to put an edge on that saw chain.

Agreed. It was pretty bad. Knew I only had a couple of cuts so I didn’t bother. She’s been spruced up since then for sure.

@@fourpasturesfarm File the drags down.....or better yet, hit them with a grider!
@PetersonFarmsofNashvillePFON
Just started running a grapple and what happened to your Tractor is a huge fear of mine ! I am looking for a grill guard soon as I see the high possibility of same thing happening to me as well Thanks for sharing 👍

I don’t think a grill guard would have helped here. The limb came up from the side, behind the front axle. I do think grill guards are a smart thing to do though!!

I cringed a little when I saw how much material was picked up just before the issues. I bent the frame on my Titan 4000 lb pallet - 48 inch, and they were good enough to replace it. I'm now very, very careful with loads near the end of those tangs, as there is so much leverage and extra load on the front end components. I also have a clamshell grapple, and only use the pallet forks for balanced loads that I lift or drop slowly. Just my limited experience, with lots of physics and math in my background. Those long tangs seem dangerous to our equipment, unless used very carefully and thoughtfully. Thank you for posting, and hope all is great.

Thanks for the great comment! It’s was definitely a heavy load even though the logs had laid there a year and dried quite a bit. I’m sure you know too that after a while you learn what it feels like when the load makes the back end a little light and when it’s too light. Luckily it felt just a little light here. I do worry about the attachment failing; hopefully it never happens. The loader arms and hydraulics should be ok to handle those without problems although bouncing the load a bit doesn’t help. The hydraulics are really touchy on this tractor.

Root cause is you're running the wrong grapple. You needed a 'root' grapple. They have a flatter face and tines every 10" or so and you can skim the ground and keep all the little bits out in front of you. --

Agree that a root grapple is better for skimming the ground for the bits. Personally I just can’t put enough utility points in it compared to the pallet fork setup. I use the forks more than any other attachment I have; mower included. Do wish I had the 4’ forks though!

That is a terrible grapple for processing firewood. I have a ck2610 and paired it with an everything attachment 55” wicked root rake grapple. Manage to get 20 face cord of logs cut and split every year for the last 4 years without any issues at all. I also scrub windfall from my woods to keep my quad/snowmobile trails cleared and safe. Sorry you caused all that damage to your tractor. Good luck.

How so? Works well for me considering we only burn wood in the cabin a handful of times a year. We don’t get super cold here in Tennessee; certainly don’t get snowmobile worthy levels of snow. Check out this video about why I went with this attachment and the cabin build video showing other ways to use the pallet fork grapple. Thanks for checking us out! Now why would I want to do such a thing? Ha! Kidding. I knew I only had a couple of cuts to do and limited time so I just suffered through it. It’s been spruced up since for sure.

Try to balance your loads better, with some of the logs hanging down is putting more pressure on one side of the loader, you can tweak a loader if you're not careful, also when you're only picking up a couple of logs you have a lot of dead space in their which lets the logs move around, have you thought about a better grapple? like the clamshell grapple.

Yep, I was methodical about my attachment selection. Check out this video about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cCH2HREeq44.html

Well I'll say the same thing o told my father in law. He done some with his john deere. You gotta watch all those small sticks on anything. When you dont have anything protecting you accept a couple forks. You need a skidsteer if you going to run it up in brush like that. Limbs are ok but not just a pile of brush. It's also very dangerous. I've seen people hurt from sticks flying up into their face. Skidsteers have the engine in the rear and plenty of protection up front usually. Better to get the small stuff out first if your just using a tractor with forks. Just my 2 cents. Oh yeah. Take agile and sharpin that chain on your husky. Its struggling for sure.

A set of long forks and those long grappkes isn't the way to go. Get yourself a real grapple bucket. Designed with multiple teeth ( with cutting edges) to get in under logs... Brush.. You bame it.. And that supports a balanced load That's clinched down tight into the grapple bucket. ( not really a bucket per-se. You can take a whole pile of brush... Bring grapple down... Compress it and move on. All that weight you have swinging around is flat out dangerous. Moving All that weight with "those forks" and trees hanging out in space could have very well landed you machine on its side when backing up and making turns. That flail mower or tiller hanging on the back for counterweight was a very smart move and probably the only thing that kept your machine oriented in a vertical configuration. With enough inertia... Even that wouldn't save you.
