Where are you supposed to capture the evacuated Freon? It is illegal to just dump it; as you know. The last system that failed on my 90 Geo Storm had to be properly done. I'm not doing a full replacement including the compressor etc. It cost $1,500 for the job. I told the dealer not to fill it with the wrong refrigerant or it won't work. They tried and got caught! They ate the cost of evacuation and fill done by a A/C shop. Now it works like factory new.

Handy primer on using a manifold gauge with the AC system, Scotty! By the way, it isn't 30 pounds vacuum, it's 30 inches! Been working with vehicle AC for decades. My take on r-1234yf? It's a real pickle, stupid expensive and hazardous material, more flammable than you think. Regarding the high side, one must be very careful when the compressor is running, AND you must be mindful of the VALVES on your manifold. You can interconnect the high and low side if both valves are OPEN. If your fill line, the yellow one, does not have a safety valve you can send high pressure refrigerant toward that wee metal can! It isn't designed for that pressure. As a professional, I must diagnose the system in operation. Thus, I monitor the high side pressure to verify the compressor and TXV operation. Handy trick! You can check the high side valve if your quick disconnect is working properly. Those knobs work in reverse from the way you think they do. As the QD is fitted, it locks atop the service port and seals the connection. Rotating the valve clockwise depresses the Schraeder valve on the service port. There is a "dead spot" as the knob is operated. When completely turned counterclockwise, the quick disconnect is shut off to the hose. I apply vacuum to the manifold, and verify (with an uncharged system) that the Schraeder valve will hold a vacuum when seated. This question has become moot with R-1234yf. If I had a penny for each time the leak was the valves, think I'd have a real bankroll by now. Nasty stuff.

Been watching your videos and really enjoying them. Have learned a lot. Recently we bought a used Toyota Camry (2014 with 44,000 miles on it) and noticed that the mpg was not what I thought it should be. Was running 22mpg! In one of your videos, you mentioned that a dirty air filter might be the cause of poor mileage. You nailed it! Replaced the filter, and now it is up to 27mpg! Thank you. BTW love the car

Scotty are you advocating venting an existing that is low on refrigerant and then evacuation via vacuum, or only evacuate on an almost empty system where the low pressure protection prevents the compressor clutch from engaging? People don't realize that vehicles "air conditioning systems" are not true air conditioning like your house. They are in fact High temperature Freezer Systems because of the heat load and poor insulation of a vehicle. True air conditioner would never cool it for comfort in a vehicle. I bought a 30 pound cylinder 6 months ago and my cost was outrageous even at wholesale. I am glad you took the time to show people. Shops have gotten out of hand along with every other industry in the world today with prices. It isn't going to be able to sustain it for much longer.

This is an awesome video. Maybe I missed something, when you use the pump to remove the refrigerant that is in the system, what do you do with it. Does the pump store it? How is it disposed of.
@sprint48219
@sprint48219 Год назад
If you have a nonworking system most of the time the refrigerant has already leaked out all you are doing is creating a vacuum so that you can reinstall refrigerant without having air in there to mess up the system If it won’t hold the vacuum then you’re finding a leak under vacuum when you have to look around and see if you can spot where you have what looks like an oil stain on a line or something or possibly use dye and a black light If you can’t find anything let it run and let the water drip out of the evaporator and hit that with the black light and if you see the dye in the water then you got a problem because most evaporators are an SOB to change Scotty has forgotten more than I know but I have picked up a little over the years Keep it up Scotty !

This is great, I got the gauge set from Autozone and did it last summer (prior to this vid). This was very thorough. I did tap the high pressure side because I was told to monitor it (to not let it get too high)...What I haven't gotten answered is the vacuum pump (I didn't get it), where does the refrigerant go? It only sucks out air and water? I've asked numerous parts stores and they either don't know or say, 'I just release it to atmosphere'...not cool (so to speak) and not legal.

I haven’t been in a shop for a long time now. Haven’t done a/c in about as long. But best I can remember from training about the history of refrigerants was something like this: early refrigerants were highly flammable, it’s replacement was eating the ozone, it’s replacement was a greenhouse gas more potent then methane by 400 times, and it’s replacement was flammable again. Or something like that. LOL can’t win.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 2 года назад
It does matter though, the ozone destroying chemicals are bad, restricting those has seriously helped.
