Doki Doki Literature Club: The Story of Character Artist Satchely (Exclusive Interview)

Doki Doki Literature Club was not the work of a single creator. While Dan Salvato came up with the story for the game, the character art was created by Satchely, who's been kind enough to provide us with an exclusive interview to talk about her journey as an artist.
The video is done in our standard storybook format, but for those who are interested in reading things in Satchely's own words, we've posted it onto Kotor's Life, Love and Video Games Tumblr (lifeloveandvide... or kotorcomics.tum...) as the text is too long for the RU-vid description.
That said, here's a few highlights:
"My first influences were digimon/pokemon as a young kid. I started drawing the creatures in those to create my own worlds. Then I would basically just sit in my room and play out stories with my own art. Which kinda leads back to present time where other people use my art to tell stories.
...
"My art style comes from the moe art-style you see in lots of anime and japanese visual novels/games. Often times it's being used for sexual themed media, so I think it's great that DDLC didn't follow this trend. I hope more creators out there will realize that you don't need sexually explicit content when making an anime styled game.
...
"Being a self-taught artist is easier than ever with the internet. There's a ton of free tutorials/references out there that helped me become better. Besides this, I surround myself with art everyday so I develop a better eye for what looks good and what doesn't. I also learned that real life is the best teacher. If there's something I don't know how to draw, I turn to real life and that solves the problem most of the time for me. I feel like a lot of beginner artists don't do that and shy away from using references.
...
"I went to an art focused high school and initially I wanted to continue by studying medicine. After much research and soul searching I've decided to follow my true passion (art and design), so that's what led me here.
"I've now been studying design at college for half a year. I had to go through entrance exams and submit a 30 piece portfolio, which was a big challenge for me. I had to step out of my comfort zone and draw things that weren't in my usual style, but in the end it taught me a lot of things that helped make my regular art better.
...
"Working with Dan was fun and I liked that his vision for the game was very clear. It made my life as the character artist a whole lot easier instead of having to guess what he might like to see.
"While I was working on DDLC I was close to graduating high school, so often times my studies had to be prioritized over drawing. It was great that he understood that and was patient with me.
"There were a few reference pictures of the characters that existed before I started drawing them. After that, he just sent me random references of poses/clothes etc that really helped me.
...
"The biggest challenge was probably the process of slowly becoming a better artist. Before DDLC I shied away from drawing full size characters because I had trouble drawing legs/hands or scenes. When I started facing these challenges I slowly became better.
...
"I'm still really surprised by the huge reaction this game has had. Neither I nor Dan expected this at all. At first I thought maybe a few hundred people would write reviews for it on Steam, but to see it climbing towards 100k now is just incredible to me.
"Also it's just surreal to me that millions of people saw my art. With that comes a lot of critique and often times I can agree with it. The most common ones are probably that the anatomy is wrong in places. Like I said before, your own mistakes are kind of invisible to you until you take a step back.
"But the positive feedback I get on my art has been the majority and I couldn't be more thankful and happy for that! It really means a lot to me to see people appreciating my work.
"Overall, I think the community built around this game has been fantastic so far, especially on Reddit. Now and then I go there and laugh at all the creative memes/jokes people make or be impressed by all the fanart.
...
"When I create my own story, I would want it to show that there's beauty in the little things, that you can find happiness/inspiration anywhere and that life is too short to waste it on things that make you unhappy.
"I would want the characters to grow and get past their fears, accomplishing the things they love."

A channel that tells us the stories behind popular games and their authors is good enough, but a channel that does this that ALSO shows us the stories of those that rarely get the spotlight and praise that the mastermind gets in order to get this praise? This is why I love this channel. Great Job!

Shablam0 I'm still not great with a tablet, but here's a few things that have helped me Set the tablet on a flat surface in line with your monitor: Do NOT draw with the tablet in your lap like I did for the longest time. Try drawing in a soft style: Ironically, photorealistic airbrush art is actually less precise than cartoony styles. If you do it right, you can create some great art while gradually sharpening your tablet skills. Consider scanning hand-drawn artwork and coloring it in: Tracing is MUCH easier than drawing free-hand and coloring doesn't need to be as precise, so you can work on the basics while still having fun. Hope this helps :D

Lucky for Satchely, her favorite character is Natsuki. Now that would be the real question if she would have to draw a death scene for Natsuki (given if there was a chance in the story, which never happened)..... But I wonder what her reaction was when she had to draw Natsuki's neck bent at 90 degrees.

Max Marriner yeah!!!! 😍😍😍😍😉 It helps share great stories about gaming that i didn't know about, and does that in a calming voice with great drawing!!!! 😍😍😍😍😉 I feel like this is important to the gaming scene, as because of the media today and their sometimes bad portrayal or not big interest in gaming, some stories can go unnoticed , but this channel helps shares them even to people outside of the close community of a certain game!!!! 😍😍😍😍😉 Also i can really resonate with the artist Satchel as its true that sometimes , happiness and fun can be found in surprisingly little things in life!!! 😍😍😍😍😉 Also we both like Pokemon and the DDLC artwork kicks ass! Satchel also did some DDLC art after the game released which you can check out on her Twitter account in the videos decription

Kate B well, it's true than satchely had A LOT more of work than velinquent but velinquent has a perfect control of his graphic style, it's the same for the light, the color and he knew how to make his backgrounds perfectly fit with the satchely's style he's just as good as satchely (sorry if you didn't understand my comment, english isn't my main language and i'm learning it now ^^" )

RED Galaxy true, but satchely had to draw a lot more models, and had a lot more work, considering that Dan Salvato wanted the characters to look perfect, while he didn’t really care about the backgrounds as much.

Seeing this made me cry in tears, because it made me feel with regret that I changed majors from graphic design to communications. Because as a kid, I LOVED drawing and making stories. As a kid I would always say that when I grow up, I wanted to create stories. Didn't care of it was movies, comics, or animation. I just wanted to create a story for people. Unfortunately as I got older, reality of life stroke in, and I no longer felt that determination that I had as a kid, in high school, I wanted to keep drawing, but my artstyle still didn't improve. I took art classes, still no improvement whatsoever. So, by the time I got to college, and studied graphic design, I realised that art was NOT for me, so instead I changed majors to Communications. And now I'm 24 years old, still in college, but graduating soon. I feel like I still want to make stories, but I just don't know how. I can't draw, my grammar for sophisticated vocabulary is horrible so I can't write novels. It's just so frustrating to me, but seeing this video made me happy that Satchelly was and is STILL working hard on her art, I saw her page and it's just so AMAZING!! I just wish I had the patience to draw you know?

It feels like to me that Satchely's art style was a perfect fit for the game, and in fact even played a big role in saving the game. If you were to slap in any generic or classic anime looking art style, it's obvious that the visual emotions of the characters and their appearences wouldn't reflect the feeling as well as Satchely's designs did. There may only be slight differences between her style and close to anime art styles, but it turned out that way in order to stay true to generic anime feelings as well as introducing a fitting style for the game. We can clearly recognize it as anime, and the little differences help us embrace the Doki Doki feeling that it emits.

That means that, indirectly, Maurício was inspired by Walt Disney. The behemoth of brazilian comics was indirectly inspired by the american behemoth. Cool, huh?

What a pleasant story. Getting out of your comfort zone certainly isn't an easy thing, but to then also put your whole ego out there by freelancing is just plain scary. Not to mention making 30 pieces of western-style art for a college entry portfolio when you've trained yourself in anime-style art...it must've been a daunting task. But a fun one, I'm sure! Best to work for the things you truly want in life. And look at how well it turned out...millions of people from all over the world have played/watched DDLC and have seen her unbelievably cute creations pop out at them at the title screen. Doo doo dooooooooo do do dooo do do do dooooo do do do do do (doooooo) DOKI DOKI!!! :D Haha, really. Doesn't get old. Satchely's art matched the cuteness of Dan's soundtrack and writing pound for pound. It's an impressive feat. The soundtrack is super cute. Satchely's story is disturbingly a mirror of my artist life... except that she continued down the path of what she loves whereas I couldn't continue to a certain point because of many many limitations of my city and mentality. I'm not blaming everything on circumstances, it's mostly my fault I haven't been continuing my dreams of making my own world and drawing it. Until recently "like 3 days ago" I finished Doki Doki Literature Club and it really stayed in me somehow I don't know how to describe the feelings I have dwelling in me I just knew I HAD to know more about this game and it's creation, now that I've found both Dan and Satchely's background videos I finally feel some closure inside of me. But another door opens of mixed feelings and left behind projects that had been sealed away by my own hand. As of right now I'm struggling to make a living in my country by helping a friend realize his projects in which he and I can make a franchise which in the end will earn us a profit and generate jobs for honest people who just want to work for a living in a sane and "hopefully" non toxic enviorment like most jobs. It's taken lots of years of frustration and of mixed results "specially when things seem to pick up only to fall flat again for a certain period". I wish I could have studied in an art and design course, it's something I've always wanted but I've never been able to afford due to my city not having any interest in such things. Actually there's no art culture where I live at, either you study medicine or psychology. Much like Satchely I had to learn everything by myself with tutorials. I also in one instance got a Wacom Bamboo tablet and used photoshop to draw my art which I uploaded to deviantart. The point is, I will now try harder to align my life towards my true passion and love. I've been worrying and focusing on the wrong things with my spare time. I'm going to continue the path I had left aside because of my own insecurities and doubts. Even if it takes me nowhere I'll be happy in the end knowing I always did what I loved. Thanks Video Game Story Time...

There are no music classes in my school nor art classes in my city. There are a few but they're quite lackluster and/or expensive. I would love to take both these classes but unfortunately, I can't so I decided the best way is for me to keep practicing alone and to be honest, if I didn't have the internet and video games I would have ended up in a sad spiral of uncreativity. My plans are to continue it and move out when I have the chance. (Currently, we don't have enough money). I'm glad that you decided to do what makes you happy. If the place where you live doesn't provide these facilities then you can use Udemy courses and teach yourself, there are tons of tutorials and references online and you can learn just as easily. Maybe you won't be handed a degree which is true but at least you can be an amazing artist regardless. I'm rooting for you, buddy!

It's surprising how much I find myself able to relate to Satchely's story. Granted, I haven't quite reached the point that she's at now, but I'm hopeful. And seeing similarities in a successful artist's journey is so inspiring.

Ok, so, Satchely literally sounds *just* like me! I like drawing a lot, and I especially love the anime/manga art style. (I really suck at drawing it, but I’m getting better) On top of that, hands and legs are really hard for me to draw, as well as the torso of a character. I’m going to pay extra attention to this game now! :)

So I am an artist as well (a young one) and as you explained how Satchely came from the beginning to now, I was seeing some real connections. Being so young (and not so talented yet) I keep thinking I'll never be as good as all the people who inspired me. So...thank you both for showing that I need to keep going. :D

@IuseArchbtw-di6cd I mean yeah sure some indie games did fail “ individually”but it didn’t ruin the reputation of indie games as a whole.. you could say the same thing about modern AAA gaming.. I said this a long time ago tho so I Think I worded it kind of weird…

I can’t believe the media treated doki doki like it was made by the devil. It’s like social bias. You don’t know what people are like until you meet them. Just becasue a video game has sensitive content doesn’t mean it’s supporting it. What else would doki doki have without sensitive content? It would be the same old typical anime dating simulator. Which is exactly the opposite Dan wanted and enjoyed. Even if it was 3 years ago I’m just disappointed that the media did that. And I’m relieved Dan and the community didn’t get shut down by it. Mainly becasue of its popularity back then it was able to stay afloat. And now Dan is expanding on the game!

One thing that bugs me about Satchely's artwork is that she seems not to know how buttons work. If you look at that one sprite of Sayori (y'know, the one at the big twist) and pay close attention to the partially unbuttoned shirt she's wearing, you'll notice none of the buttons are going through the holes like they should, so the shirt is apparently held closed by magic. This is is the case for any buttoned outfit she draws, but it's easier to notice in this particular picture -- you can confirm this by comparing Sayori's unbuttoned blazer with the other girls's buttoned ones. Speaking of which, in the scene where the MC buttons up Sayori's blazer, you'll see he's buttoning a button that doesn't even exist in her outfit; the top button is not that high in it.

I'm really glad for Satchely being able to follow her dreams and do what she wanted, and it is really inspiring like you said. I also hope that you can follow your dreams too, whether they are to do RU-vid full time with this channel or whatever! I can see this channel getting really big soon(ish), and I really hope it does because the content you make is awesome and very well made! I'm glad I found it early.
