Hey, mixing engineer here. Some labels don’t like putting the vocals on the center channel and explicitly ask to use a more traditional phantom center (left and right channel) its not obligatory but they do recommend it. Whether its better or worst is a discussion for another time.
Thanks for your insight! Personally, I think it allows for more creativity and better channel separation when vocals are assigned to the center channel, but I get it. In the end it’s still art, so they can do as they please. 🤘🎉
I agree with the "phantom center" for vocals for the sense of space and to bring the vocals a bit forward. However, my center speaker has a much better mid-range than my same brand towers. I'm kinda bummer over that issue with my speakers. Is what it is. Please keep mixing and pushing to improve the trade. We need talented engineers to please our ears. All the best, Kevin
Universal rejects mixes that use the center. So this often just a requirement by the label, not a decision of the artist/producer/mixer. Same for the LFE channel, it only should use for FX by definition (low frequency effects).
Still a mixed bag! Some sounds incredible (Björk’s Fossora album), as it was created BY THE ARTIST with Atmos in mind. Mixers are starting to figure out what works in remasters, it seems. They have been getting better. I’d love to see a labelling system. Remember AAD on cds? How about: Recorded and mixed in atmos Mixed in Atmos Remixed manually in Atmos Remixed by AI in Atmos Upmixed into Atmos.
Re: some tracks having minimal to zero center channel vocals, I have also noticed that (on tidal also), and have concluded that it must be on purpose due to them avoiding the hard center focus that movies have … Gene from Audioholics has complained about the over active centers from Dolby & DTS upmixing
When mixing in Atmos I disregard the physical speakers and only concern myself with where in the 3D “ audio dome “ I want that object to be . I use object “ size “ extensively and place vocal objects, , particularly lead vocals , close to the listener to create intimacy of that vocal .
Only because apple handicaps other decibes in order to make their propoetary tech in airpods sound best. Butnifnyoublisten through an android phone, it sounds slightly better than an iphone with airpods @@rickd438
As you noted, it really depends on the mixer. Steven Wilson is the best. He has made atmos mixes of his own music, Tears for Fears, The Who, Van Morrison's Moondance, Yes... Check out his mix of Aha's "Take on Me." Another great mixer is Greg Penney. He has mixed most of Elton John's catalog in Atmos. His mix of "Rocketman" was considered by other mixers to be a go-to demo track for illustrating the possibilities of Atmos.
As well plugged into the music scene as you are, especially how it relates to the latest integrated home theater technology, have you ever thought about doing an episode covering the pros and cons of the myriad of streaming services, like how well they support various surround formats, lossless formats, or whatever is interesting? BTW I really like the looks of your new listening setup!
I've yet to hear any spatial audio albums but have heard that Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson is the go to guy for Atmos mixes. He's the person responsible for the Who album you mentioned here. Ive enjoyed his 5.1 mixes for Opeth and King Crimson a lot.
Found out a couple of days ago that Spatial audio on IOS is a 5.1 mixdown of the .ADA Dolby Atmos music file that's then upmixed to Apple Spatial. However, if you are listening on the Apple TV or macOS out to a receiver and not Airpods, it is the actual Atmos .ADA file. Tidal plays the original Atmos file no matter what you listen on. Not sure about the other streaming platforms. All that being said. The songs are mixed on a proper Atmos rig but there are two versions made. One that will play on a native .ADA Atmos file and another that will play through Apple Spatial. This is because Apple Spatial automatically adds a boost to the lows and highs. So, mixing engineers now have to submit two separate .ADA files. All this info coming from Adam Audio's channel. There's a Q&A from a recent video.
This is jut not correct. The Atmos Master File is an ADM BWF, which is a .WAV file. After that is created, it's encoded using the Dolby Media Encoder to create a 5.1+JOC for Atmos. That stands for Joint Object Coding and your AVR will see it as Lossy DD+. The master file (ADM BWF) is what is submitted to these services with an overall volume of -18 LUFS or it will get rejected.
I can’t get over the 3 second delay while playing music on my marantz receiver, so I’ll stick to upmixed stereo. Plus my atmos set up doesn’t have rears so it’s not THAT drastic
Great video! When you’re listening to Dolby Atmos music through headphones or on a non-Atmos surroundsound system, how does it emulate the height channels?
Great video as always. I'm happy to "hear" things are getting better. I plan on doing some atmos listening this weekend. I'll let you know what I think.
I have 5.1.4 with Dolby Atmos enabled speakers on top of the fronts and surrounds. I can only get Atmos music from my Chromecast with Google TV and the Tidal app. So far, I have not been impressed much, listening to a variety of genres. Obviously a lot of these old songs have been upmixed rather than remixed (I’m assuming). But engineered in Atmos would probably sound a lot better. Looking forward to that Darkside audio disc in Dolby True HD Atmos mix!
Thanks so much for always keeping us up-to-date on these but have you ever thought on doing more test on the dolby atmos and spatial audio test on earbuds, i really can't find such content.
I’ve been kicking around that idea, too. Was not a fan when it first came out, but perhaps headphones/earbud translations of Atmos music has gotten better too? 🤷♂️ We’ll see!
Hi Ealan, Thank you for doing this video. I would like to see more Atmos reviews. I listen to every one of these songs on Apple. Thank you for doing what you do.
I also wasn’t a huge fan when it first came out. I love movie scores and assumed those would be perfect t for atmos but they’ve been mostly very hit or miss.
I agree. I’m a big fan of movie scores, too. Hans Zimmer seems to be the one at the moment who even cares about Atmos music, but that area of music still needs improvement, yeah…
Another solid upload Ealan - love your content. Genuine 3D audio should be when the music seems to step out of the speakers and immerse you in realistic audio. That for me is listening to say the drummer powering the entire music soundstage but from a specific point. As it would be at a gig/concert/recording. Rear/surround/height speakers should really just focus on reproducing reflections, reverb etc. So as a 7.2 multi channel film buff I will be sticking to 2 channel music play back for the foreseeable with phantom centre and broad soundstage courtesy of my very old omni directional speakers with subs.
Now that I have the Onkyo TX-NR7100 running the Klipsch Cinema Reference speakers (sans Klipsch sub swapped for a superior 12" Atlantic Technology 500W sealed sub) I just upgraded to Amazon Music Unlimited for Atmos and UHD streaming, and it didn't disappoint! I know the Kilpsch speakers aren't the best for Atmos reproduction, yet for music they've been quite fun listening and can present a quite large and immersive sound stage. I was to pleased to find an Ultra HD Atmos recording from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Live) of The Morricone Duel - The most dangerous concert ever!!! Easily the best renditions of Clint Eastwood westerns soundtracks (and others like KIll Bill), Italian style by the incredible Ennio Morricone.
Great, PLEASE do more - its like the early days of beatles records (left right split) I buy Bluray ATMOS - your review of WHO's NEXT is bang on what i need to hear, Ill now buy it - so much careless crap - or maybe uneducated crap out there - try Hans Zimmer - Prague for amazing mix- thanks
I particularly agree with your repeated lack of centre channel use. It’s for the main vocalist and should be there. It’s a natural thing. Not spread all over the place. That’s unnatural and tiring. Humans connect to a voice in one place.
Production teams are now actually starting to MAKE the music properly ...so now it's NOT a format magic thing... it's an actual mix. I wonder if people actually understand what and how the tech works... or even know how music is mixed into stereo ..
Thanks for the run down on songs, been curious what songs out there are legit Atmos, because it seems like everyone and their dog has an Atmos mix. I have no idea which ones to focus on. Here is what I would really like to know. What options do I have for Atmos in my home theater. I have a 7.1.4 setup, but I don't know my options. What services with what equipment can I use? I have Amazon Music, but can I even do Atmos? If I get Tidal how do I know I can get an Atmos mix to my receiver? For Apple is the only option to have an Apple TV?
Hmmm…great question. I was just taking a look online and it’s more complicated than I anticipated. I’m not researching it more and plan on making a video about it. So thanks for the inspiration! 😁🎉
I was hoping you were going to tell us that there is a way to stream Atmos from our phone to our AVR. It's really a deal breaker for me to have to have the TV on and navigate with the Apple TV remote. The great thing about music streaming is the convenience, and it's just not convenient to stream Atmos yet. I can't understand why it can't be made simpler.
@@JasonNosajasoNosaj Have you tried? Can you just simply navigate and play music through your regular music streaming services and get Atmos, or do you need to go through some other control app?
I have an Atmos enabled receiver any speakers should work right as long as they are positioned correctly, yeah? Or are the klipsche and Sony angled speakers actually worth buyin. As in, I have a ton of speakers laying around, can I not just make my own atmos theater with gif too ok
@@ealanosborne Thanks for the swift response. I just recently upgraded to the Onkyo NR7100 and all Klipsch speakers for a 5.1.4 setup after watching your last vid that 4 height is better than 2 haha. I have the Apple TV 4K so some of my streams goes to Atmos while other normal 5.1 will switch back to up-mixing of my choice of Dolby surround or DTS. So I’d like to permanently keep the receiver on one up mix when not in Atmos.
Ok , I’m going to set some things straight for Ealan and others who do not quite grasp what’s going on with Atmos. It is not channel only based . When something appears to be coming out of the front center it is not just coming out of the center channel speaker . Each audio object ( instrument, voice , what have you) is placed in a 3 dimensional space and each space is created by incorporating several speakers to create an audio object that is in essence, a sophisticated static phantom zone placement. The stem , track , audio object is rarely ever reproduced by only one speaker . THAT is how Dolby Atmos works . Also , the mixer can increase the object size to incorporate more speakers .
Well...you're not entirly wrong, just a little bit. Sounds can be placed in a specific speaker only, that's easy. Yes, the mixer can chang the object size to have the sound come from more speakers but I don't think that is used as much as one would think. When I place an object at a speaker location, it comes out of that speaker only. If I place an object between two speakers, say between the front left and the surround left, then it will use those two speakers only to try and image that sound. If I place that object in the same place but add 50% height to it, then it will use the front left, surround left, and front height left to image that sound. So, an object can be placed in a specific speaker engaging only that one speaker.
I currently have Aperion Audio Verus speakers all around my ear level plane ( V8T towers, V8C center, V8B surrounds, V8S tripole surround backs) and Aperion Audio Theatrus TC65s for heights.
Hi Ealan, i am just getting into hifi and am intrigued by spatial. It's great how you are describing the sounds and where they are coming from. I was curious if it sounds better as a whole in spatial. For example does Taylor 1989 sounds better when playing in spatial vs the regular trac (atmos off)
Well, since I have quite the killer surround sound setup with 4 subwoofers, I do like the sound of it better than listening on headphones or just a stereo version. But that's my subjective personal liking to it as a whole. The stereo version on its own still sounds amazing, but being able to sit in the middle of the action happening all around you is really cool with the Atmos version. 😎
I also listened to this same list a few days ago with my young kids ages 4 and 5. I generally agree with your review of the Apple Spatial Audio playlist. I was very surprised when September started playing. It was one of the best from the playlist for sure. I thought I had enough of Mariah Carey in the 90s when her songs were all over the radio but Dreamlover sounded nice and different in spatial audio. My kids and I had a fun time listening to it. You definitely should check out the spatial audio version of Everyday is a Winding Road by Sheryl Crow. I believe its further down the playlist and didn't make it to this review of yours. It's one of those songs that was so overplayed back then as well but now it sounds so good in surround format! Easily one of the best spatial audio mixes too.
Yes i noticed that too with a lot of these the lead vocals coming out of the left and right and some times L,F, C. Don;t know about you when I watch a movie and the main voices are not coming through the center channel, I find it very distracting for some reason. one movie that does this is Psycho 2 uhd. it is meant to be multi channel audio but whoever mastered the audio has no idea what they are doing IMO. But like you, I fully expected the main vocal on apple music to be coming through the center channel (on atmos tracks)
@ealanosborne Exactly. Tbh I think majority of the spatial/Atmos on there is just thrown on with some simple upmix to give it an atmos effect (as you said) as it mostly doesn't sound much better than stereo. Not enough coming from the different channels and mostly sounds very weak. But one you can hear the difference is jean-michel jarre oxymore. You can actually hear sound coming out of different speakers. You can tell you are listening to multi channel audio. Sadly it's not jarre's best ever album. But you can hear that it is implemented correctly. Let's be honest if all the atmos music on there was done correctly it would be fricken awesome. It's a shame really as the apple tv box is the best I ever heard actual steaming music. Also has to be said most of the so called atmos tracks would sound better as just plain stereo tracks with one of the height fx for music on my avr. It's simply one of those things if they aren't going to put the album through a proper atmos remixing process there is no point in having it. Jmo of course.
Unlike stereo and equipment depending, Atmos music can only be appreciated at medium to high volumes. Too much background mechanical noise (RFI), and to think the cables that carry the signal to my height channels happen to be shielded as well. Can only assume the heightened noise floor (faint background signal noise) becomes more apparent, probably cause the entry-level cables on my height channels have limited shielding. Hence, when the height channels are switched off (externally amplified poweramp), therefore going through just a five channel configuration (base-level). The noise floor comes back down to satisfactory levels, probably because, unlike the height channels, which only have limited shielding (entry-level), the shielding on my base-level speaker cables are of superior quality. Unshielded cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my height and surround channels within 10 minutes, the unwanted faint background signal noise used to dissipate. Maybe I should've matched cables of the same quality? Yeah, so long as I don't mind paying at least an extra £500 for the height channel cables. Conclusion; Other than listening at medium to high volumes, listening to Dolby Atmos music with quality can be rather expensive.
IMO as far as surround music mixes are concerned, Dolby Atmos is overhyped considering we've had immersive surround sound with 5.1 SACDs/ DVD-As for 20 years. However, the quality of the experience relies heavily on the surround sound engineer's expertise. One exceptional 5.1 mix I've heard placed the lead vocals in the phantom center of a circle, creating an incredible effect. To achieve this, I positioned myself equidistant from five identical speakers, calibrated my AVR for uniform distance, and found the sweet spot by moving my head until the lead vocals seemed to emanate from the center of my head, not just the front center. This effect requires the mixer to assign lead vocals to all five speakers, not just the center one, which is why optimal surround mixes often have lead vocals coming from all speakers. However, inexperienced listeners may question this approach, unaware that they need to be in the calibrated sweet spot to appreciate the phantom center effect.
For a change I like playing the AM spatial music mixes but have noticed there are no discrete sounds coming through my inceiling Atmos speakers. They are working fine but just playing a mix of bed layer and nothing discrete which I expected. Have you experienced the same?
That's mostly what I've experienced, yeah. But there are those few songs that have actual discrete information in the heights - like that hi hat in the rear right height of Dreamlover by Mariah Carey. Or the vocoder vocal section of Get Lucky by Daft Punk. Definitely some discrete audio in the heights going on. But overall, yeah - heights are often used for expanding the soundstage up more, adding more reverb and reflections into the mix to have it seem more like a live performance.
The center channel is avoided because most people’s atmos systems don’t have a as balanced center channel as their front left and right. Plus a phantom center mixed in stereo doesn’t sound the same as actual mono in a Atmos setting. .
Ealan, Have you reviewed the Roku Ultra, Nvidia Shield Pro and the Apple TV 4k? Now that you are experiencing Spatial Audio, I wonder which TV streamer is currently the best for "all of the above" living room entertainment. Thanks a million and all the best to you and yours - Kevin Also, I you want an amazing Atmos music experience, I highly recommend the album Point by Yello. I couldn't get it in the USA, but I found it on Amazon from England. Well worth the wait!!
@@ealanosborne Sir, You are very welcome. I'd send you my copy of Point, but I'm just a little bit attached to it. LOL. Honestly, It's a great way to demo an Atmos system. Every speaker is active - "bubble of sound" experience. I hope you get a copy and enjoy it as much I do.
Yes, very few mixes use the center channel, why is that??? I think it has to do with the effects they use on the vocals that are stereo, so they dont want to disturb that link and get a discussion with the artist or record company. Strangely enough some of the Atmos mixes you mentioned aren't Atmos here in Europe. Like The Who and Taylor Swift. That's odd, isn't it?
I like it, nice review on the Atmos mixed (?) albums! DSoTM could sound sublime in Atmos if done properly, oh the potential! I no longer have an Apple TV, but I checked Amazon to see what they support, and it looks like Amazon music also has Atmos support: _Amazon Music offers a wide variety of music formats. In addition to standard definition (SD) audio, some tracks in the Amazon Music catalog are available in high-definition (HD) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) lossless formats. Amazon Music even offers spatial audio in Dolby Atmost and Sony 360 RA formats. Please note that not every audio track is available in all formats. Only standard definition (SD) is available for the Free and Prime subscription tiers._ I cannot wait to get a 9+ channel AVR (I'm not so patiently waiting for a black Friday deal....hopefully not wishful thinking) to get this setup and check it out. It sounds like I need to make sure it also supports IMAX now that Disney+ is supporting it.
Well, Disney+ said back in January that they would support a streaming version of DTS audio sometime in 2023. That deadline is almost upon us. 😭 So for now, they still only support IMAX video/aspect ratio.
@@ealanosborne That's a real bummer BUT I still think it's worth getting an AVR that supports IMAX. I've been watching Star Wars Ahsoka on Disney+ and I have to say that even on my current old Dennon 1611 AVR in 5.1 it sounds incredible. It has to be amazing in Atmos or DTS:X in 5.2.4. I recently watched the Mark Wahlberg Planet of the Apes 50th Anniversary BluRay in HD with lossless 5.1 audio and I wasn't blown away with it's audio, I should have been in some of the scenes, but it was just okay.
I think they should mix new music as spatial audio if they think it’s better for the music, but they should leave original stereo music as it was intended to be heard.
Most immersive music is mixed in a quad like manner to mimic the old style of immersive audio. Most do not have great center channel speakers and are at times better to use left and right to create the center stage with the actual center to support/fill in the gap. To get the vocals to center remove the back atmos and surrounds in the settings, or form your speakers in an 180 degree curve with speakers closer with the center in small setting but cranked up for poorly mixed tracks. Older 5.1 tracks sound better in this set up epsecially if all the speakers are identical (center included) but doing this until they improve atmos, this will give you an AC3 sound like the old days but wil give you a great wall of sound that mimics live music being played.
PS For people serious about atmos music, some speakers are for home theater(ie old THX speakers) . When at all possible, use another set of hifi speakers that are the identical model for music (same watts per channel) even matching the atmos speakers as much as possible. Be able to move your speakers around for diffent mixes and settings (AC3, Quad/4.0 ,5.1, 6.1/DTSES, Auro 3D/7,9,11, etc) for the best results. Tactile bass shakers slightly dialed in takes it to the next level. Reply
I absolutely love and geek out over audio and music but a lot of music is at 440hz frequency which can negatively affect human brains. I just use a audio ripper and get the song in Flac audio and convert it to 432hz and sometimes put it through my equalizer if I notice the vocals aren’t clean as apples hi ress lossless quality.
I HIGHLY reccomend using Tidal instead of Apple. Apple Music “Spatial Audio” renderer technology operates using an outdated Dolby codec, whilst Tidal uses the Dolby-manufactured and approved renderer technology that takes the audio and converts it to whatever format you have. Sound quality is much better.
I assume that the reason why so many Atmos mix/remix do not use the central speaker is probably because their targets are the AirPods owners and not well equipped home music lovers.
Spatial Audio from Apple music doesn't output in Atmos from Apple music app on my LG Tv.. Also doesn't output atmos on any of my android devices. Best for me is Amazon music which is half the price of tidal and has similar atmos and 360 content. Although Amazon music has its own issues.
I have listened to ' September' by EWF after seeing your contribution above. I was looking forward to be emerged. Usiing a USD 80.000 audio set I was expecting a lot. First I looked for the album but I could only find this specific song within ' Apple spatial audio' so I assume this is the one you mean unless the catalogue is different in Europe. I listened to it after ' Point' by Yello which I allready said sounds incredible. Back to 'September' I managed to listen to it for 15 seconds. It sounded horrible. No tight base vocals likei in the bathroom etc. Did I use the wrong release. It is not my set because as I said ' Yello' sounds superb. Hope to hear
Huh…yeah I don’t know if it’s any different in Europe. As I said in the video, I could’ve done without all the vocal reverb in the front left and right speakers, but I thought it sounded great otherwise. 🤷♂️
I like music listening in stereo because it al old music thats the best in stereo. Left and right. I have Listening to dolby atmos but i think is the best in movie en Series. Synth music also the best in stereo. I have a marantz sr8015. In stereo is he great. Whit left right 2 ker R3 no sub needed. Lo is very nice from the kefs. But sometimes i use the sub in stereo.
Often the artist/label/publisher specifically request that the vocals NOT be in the center channel. I’m not exactly sure what the concern is, but it has to do with the ability to extract the vocals from the rest of the mix… perhaps it’s too revealing of the extreme manipulation employed to make them sound good. Or, discouraging the easy creation of karaoke versions. I don’t know, but it’s a thing.
Yeah. To each their own when it comes to the mixing engineer. But still…seems like if you have that freedom of separating the vocals, why not do it? But I understand it’s an artistic choice as well. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne I think you miss my point… it’s exactly the opposite of an artistic choice. It’s a pragmatic desire to intentionally and *specifically* make sure that the vocals cannot be extracted or separated from the mix as a whole (I.e by tapping ian AVR’s analog pre-outs).
Incidentally, I would cite my source on this, but I don’t solidly remember where I heard it. I would almost bet money that it was an interview with Steven Wilson discussing his surround mixing techniques… of which there are many, I’m sure.
You haven’t asked, but my shortlist of fab Atmos demo tracks are these- Beatles - Here Cones the Sun REM - Drive Kraftwerk - Musique Non-stop Yello - Basic Avenue Bob Marley - Jamming
@elanosborne Check out the following albums in Dolby Atmos Kx5, C’est Chic, Quest for Fire Skrillex, Surfing with the Alien Joe Satriani, American Beauty Grateful Dead. You’re welcome.
I don’t know but atmos music for me sounds weird.. it makes me dizzy. I still like the live sounds instead when listening to music if its live performance.
Call em out Ealan... there's ALWAYS goona be some cynical fake posers selling fake Gucci wares just to make a quick cheap buck on peoples hope. Its likely going to take another 2 years to get serious efforts from ALL sound engineer folks who LOVE the new forum and start to get real artistic in their fields. Grade the field brother, it may become standard one day😊🤞
Haha, thanks! Gotta be transparent these days. And I’m sure the mixing engineers whom I graded poorly already knew it wasn’t their best effort. Maybe they were in a time crunch… 🤷♂️
That’s not the same at all 🤦🏻♂️ surrounds offer audio coming from multiple directions. Left and right fronts come from the same direction. If set up properly they should give you the illusion that the vocalist is in the center
Oh for sure! That’s still a huge bargain in today’s market with all its bells and whistles, being able to use pre outs and external amps if you so choose in the future, etc. Dirac Live support if you wanna spend the extra cash, and Auro 3D! 🙌🎉
Just a consumer here. Atmos for music is the devil. Total garbage. I will stay with my 4.1 system. When really listening to music just stereo with a well added sub to get those lush extreme lows (not a fart box). Haven't heard you say anything about the height speakers isn't that what Atmos adds? So these songs can be done easily with DTS. In the end there really isn't going to be a lot of people wanting to dich their 5.1 or 7.1 or 11.2 home theatre systems to go to Atmos. Atmos for theatres good for that 2 hours but that is it. Don't drink the Apple juice.
Apple Music sucks if you want to use it for more than yourself it won’t work my wife tried to use it wouldn’t work got it to work and then the next day wouldn’t work again horrible Amazon music family works perfectly
