Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound is an audio coding technique capable of delivering sound with five discrete full-range channels--left, center, right, left surround, and right surround--plus a sixth channel for those powerful low-frequency effects that are felt more than heard in movie theaters.
DOLBY ATMOS
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. It expands on existing surround sound systems by adding height channels, allowing sounds to be interpreted as three-dimensional objects.

Would adding upfiring or surround back speakers to a 5.1 non atmos system do any thing to create additional sound experience

To do that, you would need additional wiring for those speakers and the other end of the cables need to connect to your AV Receiver, which can be a challenge in case of 5ch AV Receiver! For upfiring speakers, your distance and ceiling height matters, so cannot comment on it. But a wise choice is to always have a direct sound than a virtual or reflective one!

2 questions 1. For really experience the object based surround sound, 2 Atmos (5.1.2) speakers are enough or 4 speakers (5.1.4) should be the bare minimum requirement? 2. If ceiling Atmos installation is not an option, is it worth upgrading with upward firing Atmos speakers?

Great questions Abhishek. 1. For Atmos experience, the number of ceiling speakers can be proportional to the number of rows. 2 ceiling speakers can deliver a great Atmos experience too, if you have only 1 or 2 rows of Seating. 2. Hello Sir, what is Dolby Surround present in newly AVR ?, what is the difference between Dolby Surround with Dolby Digital II ? the same sound which DPL II has produced can get from Dolby Surround ? Dolby Surround is 7channel configuration which is achieved by adding 2 discrete channels to 5.1 and Dolby PL II is ideally a 5.1 surround sound.

Does all 5.1 sounds speakers give immersion? For example in TV/phone we have HD with LCD screen & same HD but with amoled screen which has way different quality. So do I need to look for any term for differentiation? An auaudiophile from another channel mentioned that a product (🦓 nicks) is not true 5.1 rather a multimedia speaker.

Yes. Very true. 5.1 speakers which can give a distributed audio with mention of Dolby Digital, DTS support and has 5 speakers or 5 channels of audio can give you the immersive experience

Hey Surjit, matching the AVR with right speakers is very important else it may damage the AVR. So recommend you to not connect the Panasonic system to your AVR, including only Atmos speakers. Indiamart is a good market place but seller's genuineness may differ. Offline purchase is more better!

Planning to upgrade from 5.1 to atmos 1. Which atmos setup I should choose? 5.1.2 5.1.4 7.1.2 room size 11x20 viewing distance 10 feet from the screen 90% I watch movies and TV shoes from firestick 3rd gen, amazon climbing it supports Atmos. 2. when playing atmos movies from Netflix with firestick on my friend's Marantz 6015 5.2.2 setup I got the atmos effects when I choose the atmos option from the receiver, and by selecting the pure true option I'm not getting the atmos effects And in Prime video, there is no atmos icon on the movie info page and audio settings only show DD+ in the stick the result is the same as that by selecting the pure true option I'm not getting the atmos effects 3. How does 5.1.2 differ from 7.1.4 Are the sound engineer work for each of these setups separately during the music production/editing? or how does fire stick deliver all types of contents

Unfortunately NO. You would need pre outs in your 7ch AVR and inputs for each channel in your existing 5.1 AVR. Try to trade with some more money and buy only 7ch AVR 👍🏻😀

Is 5.2.2 setup enough or we need 5.2.4 M planning to buy atmos/dtx support for future point of view as 5.1 is old traditional now a days & most of content will be available in dtx and atmos. Hai Tanmay, I have a doubt I'm using denon 1500, I generally set surround back ( I have surround back spkrs and ovhd spkrs also. depending upon the contents I have to change spkrs) my doubt is while playing Atmos content is it necessary to change in setup from surround back to Atmos? Or surround back and Atmos both are having same effect?

Hey Balaji, you don’t have to do that. Let the content be on auto and so should be the AVR. The sound from atmos and surround speakers are different. So no need to change anything

No doubt, I just upgraded to 5.1.2, it is really worth the money, but don't do the up firing speakers, install the overhead or onwall ones. Up firing ones won't give you the same Atmos effects.

Hi Ashish Almost all the AVRs has the feature to give output in 7.1 dolby surround even if input is 5.1, however good source is recommended for dolby atmos

If the prospective buyer of these speakers / home theatre has a collection of dvd, audio CD, & Blu Ray disc (original and some pirated too) majority of dvd & Blu Ray come with 5.1 Dolby digital and only the recent titles of say last 4-5 years come with Dolby Atmos too & DTS X (Hollywood ones at large) in this case dilemma is choose 5.1 or 7.1 ?? Or More config ?

Well, if the only content you are going to watch is this collection then 5.1 is fine. But if you're going to stream OTT too, then go for 5.1.2 Atmos!

Hey Chandra Shekar, the kind of sound that comes from Atmos is based on the content you watch. For instance, when you are sitting in a car, the way things move around you and over you, you will receive the same experience with Atmos. So its primarily going to deliver the sound that is over your head and the front and surround ones, will deliver the sound around you.

Yes. But to do that, you need atmos compatible content source player, like Apple TV or 4K Bluray player with Online apps. Amazon firestick for instance does not support all atmos content yet.

24 feet is too big a depth for atmos soundbar. If your viewing distance is less than 16 feet then you can go for it

1. Do we feel surround sound effects in Dolby Atmos speakers if it(audio file) encoded in DTS: X format. Or 2. Can we feel surround sound experience with DTS:X speakers if the video is encoded in Dolby Atmos?

You can get atmos with dts:x or you can select dts:x as the sound format for getting better results. The speaker configuration and placement will remain same for both the experiences

Hello.. Mr. Tanmoy. I need a suggestion. My existing 5.1 speakers have 165 watt RMS each with 3 ohm impedance. kindly suggest another speaker package in budget which supports the same specification. better if the package has an active sub-woofer.

Hey Subir, 3 Ohms is generally rare in Hi Fi circle. Its 4, 6 and 8 Ohms impedence. And the speaker recommendation will be based on your AVR. So shall need more information regarding the same.

@vijay you should check out denon avr x2700h 7.2 ch receiver then again you need to check the wattage of your speaker before investing in an avr as under powered and over powered speakers over prolonged time can harm your system

Bro , your explained very nicely. What I don't understand is some movies, I mean in many movies have audio details written 5.1 Dolby Atmos. They should write 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos!! Correct? You are the experienced one and can clear every bit of confusion here. How come they write 5.1 Dolby Atmos???? Doesn't make any sense to me. It should be 5.1 Dolby digital. Please correct me if I am wrong. Or what movie producers are trying to mean by this. Thanks and waiting for your answer.

Hey Farook Now that's a great observation, let me make it simple for you. When a Dolby Atmos movie is recorded in the studio it is recorded in the multiple channel, its not limited to 5.1.2 or 5.1.4, the various channels could be front height, front top, top middle, top rear and so on... Now it depends on the end user how he wants to set up his Dolby Atmos Home Theatre. So basically 5.1.2 or 7.2.4 is nomenclature for your Home Theatre set up for Dolby Atmos not for the recorded format. So when you will see a Dolby Atmos Bluray it will be mentioned only Dolby Atmos not in any nomenclature.

Dolby Atmos 3D Surround sound is futuristic investment as most of the content since last 2-3 years is in Atmos formats. Dolby Digital 7.1 2D Surround Sound is getting pretty outdated, so won't recommend.

Most of theatres are not Atmos enabled still give great sound experience untill you watch same movie in both Atmos and Dolby digital theatre. And your ears are very sensitive to different sounds. For small room good 5.1 system will better. And gives great experience. Because it's not wise spend 2 lakh for Atmos. And Atmos Soundbars are just to attract people. Nothing special. Another thing If someone is not willing to pay 1.5-2 lakh min for Atmos system how can he buy ₹3000+ blu ray and ₹800/- per month subscription charge for Netflix.😆

Sir kiya mujhe 1L mai koi 5.1.2 Atmos setup mil sakta hai , real home theatre. Rome size 12-14 aur room normal hai koi sound proof nahi hai. Actually mujhe sound baar Lena tha Samsung q900 phir decide Kiya hai ek home theatre lene k liye same budget mai. Q k kitna v aacha sound baar q na ho wo home theatre ka mukabla nahi kar sakta

I wouldn't call 5.1 2D. I would call it 360. Atmos 5.2 is more like 540 and adds a little bit more immersion but with every additional speaker there are diminishing returns. I think the pictures show the difference. The 5.1 has the B&W 800 series while the Dolby Atmos has some unknown brand of speakers since no one can create a high-end Atmos system without forking a mortgage over. I think people have to be crazy not to go with the B&W 800 series 5.1 system given the choice and the simplicity :-) Imho, Atmos has just made a mess of surround sound. It has complicated it and downgraded the overall sound quality for home theater. It probably explains why everyone's making sound bars. Who wants to connect 6 speakers through ceilings and walls and have 4 speakers hanging in their living rooms. Obviously Dolby is oblivious to WAF or common sense... Even if it sounded 10 times better, it'd be ridiculous.
