Ahhh i’m so glad someone mentioned collectors constantly buying and selling 😅 I have seen a few collectors on tik tok who buy a collection of dolls and then sell them within a month in some cases. While I appreciate they have bought the dolls and therefore they can do what they want.. it is so frustrating to think that another collector would treasure that dolls much l more :( I think the worst part about to me though is that doll collecting is already a very consumerist hobby. Constantly buying and then selling said dolls suggests there hasn’t been much thought or consideration (“does this doll have a place in my collection”) before the purchase, which is a bad habit imo :(

On the ballgown bit. I would love to see a doll come with an actual crinoline. Especially on a doll dressed up a bit historically, ya know? I think it'd be so cute.

I agree with the excessive gel! It's so frustrating. When I unboxed Karla, Ainsley, and Junior high Holly, I had to wash their hair like three times to get all of the peoduct out. This is in comparison to my Heather, Shanelle, and Zooey, who all had little to no gel.

i feel like theres a big thing about boy dolls being "gay" but the lack of them did mean me and all my friends as children had to make the barbies kiss each other instead... and look whos gay now (this is partially a lie, we had 1 ken at some point and we would just kill him off)

This was GOOD!! As an immigrant, I force myself to keep a small collection. I had to leave my collection behind once before and it wasn't fun, so now I'm super careful about what I buy. Plus, I also live in one of those countries where dolls are three times the original price.

Thank you for including the holiday doll comment!! When I was a kid I was always so frustrated that there weren't any chanukah dolls. The only things I can think of are mensch on the bench (just an old guy) and Rebecca from AG (and not everyone can afford an ag doll). With christmas dolls it'd also be nice to see dolls from other cultures and how they celebrate christmas. Like instead of another american based christmas doll what about a guatemalan christmas? Theres so much room for creativity if companies just branched out a bit more

Integrity Toys $50 USD for the "privilege" of getting in line for what is essentially a blind box, so yeah, that's a hard pass for me. Plus, just on principle, I really, REALLY, strongly dislike anything snobbish or snob adjacent. LOL

Dolls that take forever to unbox and unnecessary gel in hair is a big pet peeve of mine. Also as a sometimes an inbox collector huge boxes that don't need to be so huge.

I really agree with the unnecessary amount of gel in rainbow high hair pet peeve because it’s always hard as a rock. Another one for me is how they used to package some older dolls. I collect 90s barbies and sometimes they have this obnoxious thread thing that literally sews their hair to the back of the box

The international thing is especially annoying because they're not ACTUALLY "sending overseas". Their manufacturing is in China (all manufacturing, dolls, packaging, shipping boxes, the lot), which is literally the same landmass as Europe, India, most of the rest of Asia, the Middle-East, etc etc. If we want to get really picky, there's even a landbridge to Africa technically. China has well-established routes to all of them. It'd be faster to ship these things through the SEA region down to Australia than it is to get them to North America, and yet here we are. Several doll companies have headquarters outside of the US too, like MGA, which has a headquarters in The Netherlands. They handle their own European region distribution and they still can't actually manage it, which genuinely starts to read as gross incompetence at some level by this point. I'm biased, because international fan here, but that's certainly my biggest pet peeve. There are many things that can be annoying about dolls you collect, but if you can't even collect the dolls in the first place due to the awful distribution, then there isn't even an opportunity for any of the other annoyances to come up!

I wouldn't mind if these resellers sold thrifted dolls for $50. In Australia people will sell them for over $300. Some Bratz are listed on eBay for $1000 out of box! Like Raya. Its so frustrating the price is always way too high. Its like they think of the maximum amount someone might pay and then double or triple that number. So the doll just sits there unsold for years instead of going to someone who would love and appreciate it

As a non doll collector i don't know if i should share this other pet peeve but i hate when doll collectors do company loyalty.It's a thing when you like their brands as a consumer but when you follow a company blindly and justify their actions at every single moment i get the ick..😂

This is necessarily a pet peeve, but I’m someone who actually really likes Portland Dolls so it makes me a little sad when people think they’re creepy. Then again I’m blind so I can’t see their faces but I think they’re beautiful. What is the pet peeve however, is sometimes I’ll go into a store and somebody who is my age will be buying Legos and stuff but then call me weird for buying dolls. Like it’s the same thing. To be fair it only happened once but it was annoying. I was at an antique store with my friend and he was helping her buy a Lego castle and I showed him the doll. I picked out and kind of let it flip out that he thought it looked weird, annoyed me porcelain dolls sorry I’m speaking into my phone

You said it. Scalping. My #1 problem with collecting. I used to get pissed when I see them do this. Greed is what I call it. Now I just say ol' well it wasn't meant for me to get it. Buy something else. I collect to keep , enjoy my dolls & pass on to my grand-daughters. I am an inbox collector. I have dolls out of the box when I see them on sale. I pay for the fan club for MH. It's useless to me if I can't get the dolls I want. ( Exclusive ones)

I bought the Mattel Pink Premier Odille at 3am when she launched. Some people have got theirs already but international customers haven't even had it shipped yet. We already have to wait longer for the parcel to get to us it sucks they wait 2+ weeks before sending out our orders.

I feel like ppl just hate on boy dolls to hate on them at times-like you would have a two pack like jack & sally where jack got not only a whole new face sculpt but also a whole body sculpt & the outfit is still rlly well done yet..ppl still claim sally ate him up n it just comes off as bias at this point Lik i still like sally but how is she better then jack?? I totally agree with you on the blind box stuff. I usually don’t get blind box dolls, and when I do, they are very specific. The only blind box dolls I have are the small BLACKPINK K-pop dolls, because BLACKPINK is my favorite K-pop group. Well, they aren’t really in blind boxes, because they are packaged in little microphones. When I heard that there were official dolls of them, I was so excited! I found them at the store, but I was a little disappointed Because I didn’t know which one I would get. It was even more disappointing when I got duplicates because since I can’t see, I definitely couldn’t tell which member I got. There are four members in the group, and even though there are 16 to collect, I at least wanted all four members. I ended up getting two duplicates and made a second store trip for the remaining two. I’m so happy I have all four members, but other than those, I don’t like blind box dolls. I love the BLACKPINK dolls packaging, though. They come in these really cute black and pink microphones and I love storing them in the microphones.

The $50 W Club membership gets you a guaranteed chance to purchase at least 5 Club dolls in the year (i.e. they are not limited). Then there are separate dealer and lottery dolls above that. They generally say the dolls are $10 more if any are leftover for the public, so technically there is a savings there. That said, their prices have been increasing and often details decreasing. There are also around 10 chances to enter a monthly contest for a discontinued doll, and there is access to the forums. I only buy a couple of dolls from IT a year, but I still find it worth it. I consider watching the presentations and being in the Integrity Toys world an entertainment benefit. However, I'm not sure how much longer I will keep paying.

For me, if I’m going to pay a ton of money for a doll like over retail price. It either needs to be a limited addition, in that case it makes sense to me why you would charge more because the value is going to go up because it’s never going to be on the market again, and the quantities were limited in the first place, or it needs to be a one of a kind artist doll. I am absolutely willing to pay more for those. That’s not a scalper price that’s an artist being charged for their work. Like for example I’m getting my first porcelain ball joint doll Made based off of a drawing my friend did. And the artist has to literally make the porcelain and fire it until it’s perfect. So to me if I’m going to pay price for something it’s got to be something like that with the artist is hand, making it and making the clothes and you can feel all the love that goes into it. Not the asshole but steal all the jack and Sally dolls and then try and resell them for outrageous prices. And limited additions I understand that they’re going to go up

Thank you for doing, a video on this topic here i appreciate it. Pet peeves for me is the poly hair i at least go in and Re-root my doll's some of them. And some of the dolls, need paint details or some don't but in reality they do some of them or restyle or slight or major makeover it all just depends. Either way thanks for the video.

I have what some might considered a small collection, they are all displayed and I don't buy every doll, (mainly because Mattel don't allow the UK to have too many). I have sold some dolls in the past but most of what I collect, I keep.

the like hyper exclusivity of IT makes me uncomfortable tbh, i watch gregs corner who reviews them and talks about the process of it all and hes a good resource for learning about that i think he's the only person ive watched but does seem to know what's going on and gives advice for getting them and such but also the fact that you kind of need to get advice to buy the dolls at all is weird to me, but there are some gorgeous girlies (and they do a good boy doll) that i like seeing them at least

5:13, I hear you on this one… While my first experience had to do with an DS game I’ve seen this done to dolls before on EBay. Resellers having the audacity to keep the cheap price tag they bought the item for while still listing the item at an absurd price. Bro you are not about to sell me on an item you got for 12.99$ when you’re trying to get me to buy at 120.00$

The only way I approve of reselling thrifted dolls is if they have been restored. But that typically means a collector found it and wanted to care for it.

to add on to representation, Asian dolls tend be VERY hit or miss-specifically East Asians. community reactions also add on to this. I’ve seen too many people praising dolls that are a cultural mess to the people they’re trying to “represent”, and it’s usually always coming from a non-Asian person. I love that black dolls have so much support from the community when it comes to hair textures, I just wish people could be more outspoken for Asian cultures in the same way-ethnicities are not interchangeable.

I collect 2 of each type of dolls because I like them as twos (siblings, couples, enemies... etc.) Except for bjds, for some reason, I have 9 of them lol. I also collect anime figures but I only collect the characters that I love :D

One of my figure collecting pet peeves are Hot Toys Hong Kong limited exclusives. The headquarters of Hot Toys are in Hong Kong. Limited exclusive means that, first of all, only a really small number of these figures are produced - like 1500 worldwide. Second step is that Hong Kong-based customers get first access. Then usually, if anything is left over, Sideshow gets it to sell. Now if you google how many people live in Hong Kong, you can easily see that the only way for us normal mortals to get such a figure is via ebay sellers. Which always means higher prices. And yes, they mostly do recolours, but very attractive ones. Game skins people love, completely chromed out, fully-armoured figures, etc. To stay at least a little sane, I am super selective. With my last Hong-Kong exclusive, I sat through the Sideshow application process for the possibility of buying such a figure. Of course not a single figure was left for Sideshow to sell. Sigh, I was prepared for this to happen. Still mad about the method of selling.

I'm literally trying to wash gel out of several new RH dolls' hair as I'm watching this video 😂😭🪦 I'm so glad this one was brought up, seriously what the hell is this stuff made out of?! The bane of my existence. The t ties are infuriating! Most dolls are already packaged so securely that the t ties are basically not even necessary to ensure the dolls stays put. They're awful. And RH is probably the worst offender for overusing t ties in the clothes. I'll think I've got them all and then go to change a dolls clothes and oops, another t tie. 🙄 I don't totally hate blind packaging but they need to be cheap and the designs need to be cute enough that I'm not just vying for 1 specific toy. I'm definitely glad the trend has died down because there was way too much of it going on for awhile. You are spot on about the boy dolls! So often when doll companies bother to make a boy doll, the quality is either lower, or the clothing is boring. I collect fashion dolls for dress up- I want high fashion boys! We need more Ash Silverstones and Rocker Bois in the world. As a customizer my policy with g1 MH dolls is to customize ones that aren't in display quality. Like even if a doll base I'm using is "rarer", they're incomplete or damaged or the hair has glue seeped into oblivion- dolls that realistically aren't going to be displayed in their original state. But also I truly don't care what anyone does with their dolls- display quality or otherwise. Adding to the straight hair pet peeve- darker skinned dolls constantly being given blue eyes. Like obviously poc can have blue eyes, just like poc can have all manner of hair textures, but seeing lines where almost every doll with a dark complexion has blue eyes and/or straight hair always feels like they think they need throw in eurocentric features to "compensate" for the skin tone and it gives me the ick. Variety is nice and having poc dolls that kids can see themselves in is important. I hate Mattel creations. I did join Fang Club earlier this year but I don't think I'm going to renew. The only Skullector release I have is the Wednesday and Morticia and that's only because my sister came through for me with her high speed internet. (I wasn't fast enough during early access, she managed to get it during main release the following day.) Between the lackluster subscription service, the manufactured scarcity shtick they always push, and the playline quality of so many of their, "collector" releases, I'm just so over Mattel's BS.

I just unboxed around a dozen dolls in the past week, and the T-ties are a pain. I did notice that Mattel used very tiny ones on last-year's holiday Barbie. It was still too short, but at least it didn't put a big hole in the fabric. I use fingernail clippers for many of the ties, especially the ones on the head. The bit of curvature helps get in there. However, when I unboxed some American Girl dolls, it was such a breeze because they just have a strap for each limb and a neck strap.

The cycle selling collections thing really irks me. I have a friend who does the exact same thing with his video game collections. One month he'll decide he's not into Switch anymore and sell all his games to buy PSVita or something instead, then 6 months later tells me he's getting a Switch again and going to sell his PSVita games to buy back some of the Switch games. And each time he's making less money back. At least most of those games are still fairly easy to find second hand, it must be so much more frustrating for doll collectors!

I think for the people who sell their collections and then regret and rebuy them it can be a mental health thing, with some mental conditions it's possible to gain and lose interest (or obsession) with something at a rapid pace.

So many good things touched on in this video, like... I never understood the hate for g3 monster high, I collected the old g1 dolls when they were first coming out and loved them but was always a bit bummed they all had the same bodytype and such, g3 diversifying them I think is amazing, not even just for representation but also it's just simply really boring when everyone looks pretty much the same. It's the same when there's a line that has all white dolls and maybe one token slightly darker skinned one and it's just boring to look at in addition to the racism (which is obviously the worse and more important thing, but I hope you get what I'm saying). Also, on another note, being a doll collector in Iceland is kind of hell bcs regular dolls like monster high or rainbow high are overwhelmingly often priced at like $70 - $90, thankfully I go to the UK sometimes cause my partner lives there and can buy dolls there for cheaper at usually around $40 - $50, I almost never buy dolls here at home (unless they're on sale) because I simply can't afford to... also I can't really order them online either cause either they don't ship to Iceland, or they do but the shipping is just as much, if not more than the doll itself... Lastly just wanna mention the amount of hairgel some dolls have makes me wonder why they have 'hair' in the first place and not just sculpted hair? And also 't ties' need to be eradicated yesterday.

The t-ties ruin outfits and leave holes. They also should not be allowed on the back of doll heads. They leave sharp points sticking out. They didn't use so many of these when I was an 80's kid. My other pet peeve is the general lack of quality of doll clothes today for fashion dolls unless you're buying a realllly expensive collector doll. Think back to say Peaches and Cream Barbie, Crystal Barbie, Dream Glow Barbie, Sweet Roses PJ and the outfits they had with the ruffles and layers and the way the outfits draped so nicely. Now you get that stiff papery plastic fabric so much on dolls with skirts that are stiff.

Side note postal service in the US & UK & Europe are very terrible lately. Limiting shipping limits the number of lost packages.

My pet peeves are collectors acting like playline dolls should be the same quality as collector edition dolls. Constantly complaining about prices, nobody is forcing you to participate in this hobby!! Insisting on “wonkiness” showing the “messed up” doll & I can’t see any issues at all. Constantly bitching about G3 because of their nostalgia blindness over G1. Complaining about too many releases. Blaming “resellers” or “scalpers”for everything, there is nothing unethical or “moral” about resellers that type of judgement is weird to me. If Ticketmaster or other major retailers can’t prevent this issue then why is a toy company going to do better? Or complaining that Mattel is unprofessional or doesn’t know how to run their business. The majority of these are the same peeves I’ve had my 35 years as a collector. My opinion about availability or pricing in other countries. Hundreds of toy companies (Rement, SmartDoll, Minifee etc) charge a higher price or are just not available for sale in the US so Mattel or another doll brand doing the same is normal. Toys profit margins are razor thin.

I'm from Argentina, and the pricing thing is the worst, 20 dollar dolls are 100 thousand arg pesos, that's like 100 dollars, I really hate it sooo much, I'm a student, so it's kynda hard to have that much money for a hobby... I got my only doll as a gift... I'm trying to save money because I do really love dolls, but the pricing is super shitty

I am a cycle collector. I have issues linked to anxiety and worry about possible homelessness so i tend to buy dolls, then sell them, then buy them depending on how safe i feel. Also i dont have space to put them into storage

I noticed in the 1/6 scale Phicen TB League anatomically correct figures. They don't make black female figures. They make black male figures and other races male and female figures. The also do make different body type, sizes.

I payed for the monster high membership once and then they put a ban on shipping and I couldn’t even buy any dolls with it so I’m not buying it again, The membership price is double for me in my country so to me it’s not worth $20

I loved all of these pet peeves! I would say the worst for me is the hair gel in RH dolls 😪 and the t-ties. Although I started with G1 MH I totally love the G3 changes. The diverse body sizes make the dolls more unique imo. A lot of doll lines really lack both body diversity and racial diversity which is a real shame. Even though I’m not in a minority group I feel dolls should have a lot more diversity…we’re all beautiful. With the customs thing and the in/out of box thing I’ve had bad experiences. I’m an 80s baby so I had a massive gen 1 My Little Pony collection and although I don’t have all of them still I have a chunk of them in storage and some I’ve bought as an adult and in some communities related to MLP on the internet there are real assholes who give you shit for taking a vintage pony out of the box. And while I don’t see a problem with people keeping dolls and ponies in boxes if they want to I don’t think I should get shit for taking them out of a box. Especially when I bought them for my collection! Some folks are real mean about that and patronising too. If I spend money on a doll or pony even if it was expensive I want to be able to hold the damn thing 🤣🤣 and display it. I absolutely love your dress/top!! I find the thrift one to be weird. I get tons of hate for saying it but stuff at thrift is random. Nobody "deserves" to find things at thrift and the idea that if you just leave a collectors item at thrift a collector will come along and cherish it is wishful thinking and not reality. Collectors are not evenly distributed and neither are the things they collect at thrift. I've seen rare vintage toys in the goodwill bins and nobody wanted them. Things in rough shape that were thrown on the ground that would have gone straight to the garbage if I hadn't picked them up for my personal collection. If someone wants to buy a vintage item, go to the trouble of cleaning/repairing it and they list it for the going price I say more power to them. That's a labor of love for many who thrift and frequently the money made goes right black into their hobby of choice. I think trying to figure out who "deserves" a vintage doll at thrift is a fools errand. It villainizes our fellow collectors and makes people afraid to ever sell anything from their collection for fear of being labeled a reseller. Trying to shame collectors into underselling their stuff is gross and lumping them in with people who buy out the stock of brand new items to scalp is wrong.

I was a G1 collector only until I bought my first cheap G3. I have 2 now and really like them. I have to say I agree with those who say Draculaura was ruined when they gave her thick thighs. This is not because of fat phobia but because it doesn't fit with the concept of vampires who I always picture as perfect beautiful beings who only drink blood so it feels illogical for a vampire to have thick thighs. I would have preferred Clawdeen to have the thick thighs because she is a werewolf who are imagined as muscular, more beefy due to having to eat alot because of their werewolf metabolism. That is my reasoning behind why it doesn't make sense for Draculaura to have thicker thighs.
