It's been like that since forever, for at least since magic became a lost art. It usually has to do with fear of something one doesn't understand. People tend to focus on what negative things witches can be capable of (but it's that way for everything else, so that's rather silly perspective...)

Quite a bit of witches being denounced as servants of "thee deveel" stemmed from sexual harassment by an important business owner,someone of the church ect. If their advances were refused they had the witch arrested under false charges and things went down hill from there. Some things never change only now hush money is paid out.

Thorn....LOL.....been there.....my first BOS was a black three ring binder, my altar cloth was a remnant piece of black velvet that I embroidered a golden pentacle on, my cup was a silver chalice I saved up my Birthday money for, my fire candle was a red pillar candle bought at Spencers along with my dragon incense burner I bought there too, my athame was a black handled kitchen knife I bought, my wand was a stick I found on the ground, my robe was a length of wool jersey I found on the remnant table at a Fabric store and paid all of three dollars for, and my cingulum was a length of jute from my grandmother who was into macrame at the time. LOL. My incense was from Spencers, and my first cakes were from Dolly Madison. LOL. From there I started to move out to Pier One Imports, which was a lot different back in the 70s than it is today. Back then you could walk in and buy a Japanese tea pot, with matching cups, for about ten dollars. And they sold teas from all over the world. Great for cakes and ale. By the way I get this stuff from World Market now. I got a really great basic white teapot for 12 bucks at Xmas this past year. Witches of old didn't have special stuff to use. They used everyday stuff that blended in with the rest of their lives. Unless they were wealthy they couldn't afford ritual tools unless they made them themselves. Athames were used for spells, but also for cutting the bread and meat for dinner. Besoms were used to sweep both the hearth and the ritual circle. Cups were drank from all the time. Plates, candles, incense powders were used to sweeten the house during illness. Brews, teas, elixirs, etc. were used for the general health of the family as well as for ritual. Women made their own cloth using wool, linen or imported cotton. Men used leather to make such things as special books which held the magicakal knowledge, to shoes for ritual, to pouches and hats and such. Even little leather cups. This is how our ancestors lived, and how they did their magick. LOL.

I have heard this as well, that it is useless for spells and such. But honestly it is all in the intention. Not dismissing what you are saying, it is great to use natural supplies. But the energy you raise, the will to make it happen will suffice. At least if you are just getting started.

@shanna true, I didn't really think my original comment through. Such items are not "useless", just "less than ideal". It's not so much the ritual items as it is the person doing the working. You just have to be careful about the crap they put into cheap items.

heard that you can cleanse nearly anything with sage and give it a positive purpose. its helped alot with items ive gotten from thrift stores because the items come from unknown people around the area and you dont know if someone died or if they were a bad person

The work you've put in to your things, ie gardening herbs, candles and such, is the strength in your power you will put out. Making your own candles cost next to nothing. You do not need scents! Plain bees wax. Sorry, I don't mean to discourage, it's just that there are some things you just can not "modernize". She's right, you do not need an expensive witchy store. You just need patients and being self sufficient. It's what witch craft is about. The magic of what you give and provide to the world. Blessed be, sister❤

Exquisitlee electric tea lights/ other lights will work if you can't use flames. Attended a ritual that used them instead of real candles, still powerful!

You can get the little battery candles. You don't have to have open fire for there to be the element of fire. Remember that batteries carry electricity, and electricity is fire in it's most powerful and elemental form. LED candles even look like little candles, and they work just as well. Don't be embarrassed about being embarrassed. LOL. You are as the gods made you to be. So be it. As you will so it shall be. Mish...I've been a witch for 45 years..and I'm allergic to Pot. Causes me to go into upper respiratory distress. Seriously. I sneeze for 15 minutes straight and then act like I have a bad cold for a month after. I had a friend in the 80s who had glaucoma that could only be put into remission with pot. She had it on her driver's license. That's how I found out I am allergic. I don't do anything other than what my doctor puts me on. LOL. Those who are witches, and who do magick and know how to meditate, are mostly just like her. Get over it.
