I’m just blown away. I can’t believe I just learned all these recipes in under 10 minutes. I appreciate you guys so much. I’m in L.A. and finding it so hard to make ends meet with the high prices and inflation. This will make my life so much easier. You have no idea what it means to me. Thank you 🙏 btw your son has a great voice. He should do some voice over work. 👍
Nice to see Daniel - what a great kid, you must be proud. Great meals - I find I eat a lot of this stuff because I like it, not necessarily due to budget - that's just a bonus 😀. Also vegan, I add a lot of veggies, fruits & nuts to meals of course, but in a tight spot, having shelf stable foods like these meals are very handy 😀.
I love this show with Daniel. As a part of our homeschooling curriculum for the Fall we plan on doing something like this with our 10 year old. He's been showing more interest in cooking and in the kitchen, so this is perfect as reference! ✌️
Please don't put your 10 year old online. There are horrible perverts out there who scour youtube for children to watch. I'm sure you love your child enough to not put it in harms way.
Involve your child in all aspects of this process…meal planning, finding/using recipes, pantry/fridge/freezer shopping, making up a shopping list, looking for sales (including unit pricing), then making up the meals…and clean up too 😊
I wasn´t able to make it for the live show, but watching it now. Very cute and knowledgable son. Really interesting. Here in Portugal, the Euro store, at least the one in the nearest city, mostly sells junk food.
Daniel has a wonderful speaking voice!! I was doing my dishes and listening and loved very much how he made me think he needs to be a DJ on the radio lol
My usual Dollar Tree also increased prices to $1.25. I happened to stop in a different location that is also close to my home and they are still charging $1. I was happily surprised!
Thats interesting? Where is that one located, I wonder why. Ive almost given up shopping there due to their 25% increase. Its still good for some things but I use to go in and stock up: mushrooms, pasta, large containers of spices...
Wonderful video! You cooked up so much food on so little money. Visually seeing this was helpful to me and my thoughts of going vegetarian several nights a week. Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰
This is one of the best grocery haul/meal planning videos I have seen in a long time. I can especially relate to it because we eat much the way Hope and Larry do. I was curious to see how much Hope and Daniel would have spent had they shopped at Aldi instead. I came up with $24.75; however, in some cases the sizes available were not the same in each store, so I had to go with larger sizes where I could. The only brown rice Aldi had was organic 2 lbs. for $3.95; the flour there comes in 5 lb. bags for $1.85 (so cheaper by the pound at Aldi). The same goes for oats; Aldi sells them in 42 oz. canisters for $2.65. The two-pound bag of black beans at Aldi was $2.75; and Aldi doesn't currently carry shelf-stable 32 oz. almond milk, so they would have had to buy refrigerated 64 oz. almond milk for $2.09. The canned vegetables were cheaper at Aldi in all cases, except the Aldi canned potatoes are in a smaller size at $.89. Elbow macaroni at Aldi is $1.85 for two pounds, as opposed to Dollar Tree's 20 oz. package for $1.25. Aldi pasta sauce is $1.39; lentils are $1.45. In the end, though, if shoppers have Aldi near them, the per-pound prices at Aldi make Aldi the overall winner for thrift, IMHO. I have a Dollar Tree right next to my local Aldi, so I could easily run in and out of both stores to get the best price at each and come away with the best of both worlds. I'd love to see more videos like this one.
Thanks for doing the comparison. I'd never done a meal challenge video from Dollar Tree. The fact that they don't actually offer that many food items did make it easier to decide what to buy. I agree that, ultimately, shopping at more than one store is the best policy. It's really the only way to get the absolute best prices that you can.
@@UndertheMedian Even better - we shopped at Aldi this morning and saw that the prices in the store are a bit lower than the prices on line, so I'd have done even better than I thought. I was also happy to see that the prices on some of my regularly-purchased items, which had increased over the past several months, actually came down from the last time I shopped at Aldi about a month or so ago.
I want to go more plant based and was wondering what I could do with the black beans than I have, so this was really helpful and they look really yummy 😋 so thanks for sharing 👍😊
love your video, practical and no nonsens. We in the netherlands eat very diverend but we sure can learn a lot from you. And al groseries you used can be bought here as wel.
I've watched youtube videos similar to this where someone will spend X amount at Dollar Tree + .25 lol, or they will shop similarly at Walmart. It was interesting to see your version as a vegan. I enjoyed seeing your flexibility in getting non organic or something similar to get a larger ounce amount to maximize what you get with similar items. Great job!
Just loved this Episode. Thank you for the Inspiration. But for once I have something to critique: I feel like I know that salad and no, it was not finished. There was at least a quater cup of pickel Juice or even balsamic vinegar missing ; )
It don't always have to be meet! You sure can survive without it. Thank you for this awsome recipe. Growing up with Italiens in Europe ate my share of Spaghetti Bolognese. I definitely have to try the Lentils version. Looks delicious. Thank's for ghe Idea. Lol
Nice job you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!! Daniel did such a great job!!! Nice to see him in there, seeing a young person who knows what to do with the food! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Such an impressive result! Thank you for sharing the process. Did you think of recipes before going into Dollar Tree, or just decide on them once you were there?
This is wonderful! Daniel is an excellent presenter 👍 I rarely ever go in the Dollar Tree. But seems I need to check them out more often. I had no idea they would carry Almond milk. I never would have thought to put brown rice and pineapple together..for a salad. That looks so good. That's A LOT of GOOD food for $20!!! This week I made a large crockpot of veggie soup from fresh garden produce - zucchini, yellow squash, onion, tomatoes, basil, carrots..I was going to put cabbage in also but there was no room...lol..- it made 4 quarts of soup. And I just pickled a gallon of beets tonight. I keep reading about food insecurity in the US, which is heart breaking. Tonight your meals and $20 shows there is hope for those struggling.
Not all 1$ trees carry shelf stable 32 oz. Almond milk, mine doesnt but at 1.25 a better deal would be at Aldis or any store that sells 1/2 gallon under 2.50 (Walmart brand, Wegmans)
Four Day Homeste... lentils and mushrooms mixed together I use for tacos. The same mixture with ketchup&mustard& truvia brown sweetener makes a vegan sloppy Joe sandwich! Lentils are SO versatile in my opinion!👍
Unfortunately many people are scared to try vegetarian meals which is a pity. I have not eaten any type of meat in over 30 years. The key, as far as Hope is concerned, is condiments which add flavour so meat is not missed. I intend cooking lots more rice and beans.
That was so lovely to have Daniel in the vlog, what a lovely young man, you’ll have to have him in more vlogs, once again Thankyou, Hope, Larry and Daniel xx
That was interesting! I also find Dollar Tree has the best prices on dried beans and brown rice. I love their frozen blueberries, which are much cheaper than the supermarket. Some of their spices are better than others. I like their garlic powder, Italian seasoning and cinnamon. Occasionally I can find honey wheat pretzel sticks. They have 16 ounce loaves of 100% whole wheat bread most times I go. Do you have recipes for the dishes you made?
My store must be smaller, Ive never seen blueberries, unless its just the managers choice? 2 lbs of brown rice at Walmart was about .75 c a lb. if theirs's only 1 lb.?
A vegan, I am not. However, I eat about 85% plant based low carb diet. I was surprised with the negative comments from folks that know you are vegan. What I don't understand is, if folks have nothing nice, supportative or positive to say, why do they have the need to say anything. I will never read any more of the comments. Thank you for sharing with us, how your family eats. Blessings.
Madeline, thanks so much. People definitely have strong opinions when it comes to food. Honestly, we don't let it bother us. We very comfortable with our dietary choices.
Amazing! Ive been stocking up on dried beans ( in case of emergency) but at age 60 have rarely cooked with them. This gives so many great ideas! Could you please make a video on what to make using pinto beans?
This is an awesome video! I think you created a ton of healthy food and balanced meals for just $20. Well done!! I have a tip that could have saved you $1.25. Instead of buying the almond milk, you could have thrown a few oats in your blender with water and made your own plant milk. I often do this when I am baking and save my expensive almond milk for lattes. I use a ratio of 1/4 cup oats to 1 cup of water. I don’t even bother to strain the milk if I am going to use it in a recipe that calls for oats or oat flour.
It was great to watch you shop and cook together. Daniel is a great presenter - he'll make an awesome teacher. Loved all the recipe ideas. My favorite meal is a pinto bean and rice burrito bowl. I could eat it every day. Oh wait - I do!
I think I may try a few of these. Thank you for helping me think about putting something’s together that I wouldn’t have thought to combine. Worth trying for sure.
Hope, you and Daniel did an awesome job, for 20.00! I have some work to do, bringing down my grocery budget, cause Wal-mart is way too expensive and I am having issues staying on a budget. Hugs from Texas, God Bless y'all!
what a great video!! I’m so excited to see so many of your recipes in one video!! Healthy recipes for cheap!! Your son has such poise-definitely a future in tv/radio if he wants it!!
Wow. This is really impressive. I wouldn’t find it the most delicious thing, but it’s a great way to show it is doable. Also - just a note that if someone would want to make it even cheaper, if the Dollar Tree is near a Walmart or Aldi, you can get the vegetables for even cheaper. Great video!
Thank you Hope& Daniel! Nice to see how you plan and use up what you purchased! Life lessons are being taught! When we homeschool,we never quit learning even after graduation! I learn something new everyday& I have been out of school 39 years!👍
Great job Hope & Daniel (handsome young man)! I know when food shortages hit. I'll have to eat more carbs but these meals would require more insulin.🙁 Black bean burger recipe, I'll give to my vegan friend! Everything looked delicious!
Great video. I was interested in your wraps because they're different from my basic flour/oil ones. I generally pick my recipes based on what I usually eat and use discount stores for supplements. The $1.25 Tree (ha ha) has dark coffee vacuum packs and nut oils.
This was an awesome video! I am going to watch again and write the recipes down. This is such a blessing to those of us working to stretch our money. Please do more of these, any more plant based recipes would be wonderful. I am plant based but even for those who are not they could just incorporate these recipes into their lives with whatever they do eat. Your whole family is amazing. My husband and I both watch all of your videos. We live in Wisconsin so we love hearing about things in Illinois. Thank you again!! I first found you on Chef AJ!!
Fabulous video! I've got to try my hand at the black bean burgers. I'm so surprised at the sheer volume of food you managed to create, with a healthier twist. Love this!
How amazing, to cook dinner for a week for what is less than $25. Now, I know you spent $20, but, because you had basic spices, and some condiments, that little bit went really far. What throws me, really, is the massive volume. That is a lot of food!
Hi Hope and Larry! Great video as always! Before I sit down and write everything out, is there a cheat sheet and/or recipes written out somewhere? I understand if there isn't, I know that takes a lot more time and work. I'm just making sure first. :)
Ooooh, these look good! I have to try them. I find that as long as you season well, and have staples like flour, rice, etc. you can work the cheapest products into something tasty and hardy. It really comes down to preparation. Now if I could only actually practice what I've just preached... 😂😂
Thank you for this video. Sometimes life is rough or I just want to save a bit of money. More recipe ideas isn’t bad at. I’m interested in trying the burger Patties you made there
