Thanks so much! Not a parent, but a children's librarian with a monthly Lego Club and about a million lego sets in our storage room! Definitely using these tips.
My kids LOVED this! They wanted to watch it over and over. My favorite trick was built legos in the shoe boxes. They loved the lego guy drawer. That got a "wow!"
Aw how fun! Milo will be thrilled to know they liked it. When he found out his Legos would be on Do It On A Dime, he said, "EVERYONE IN THE WORLD WILL SEE MY LEGOS!" 😄
We are all Lego fiends here! Recently I invested in 2 tall 10-drawer units and organized by type of Lego and it's the best organization system. It's enough to hold the "unbuilt" Legos and I also have lots of display shelves including those Ikea ones
This video is just what I need it! I have an 8 year old boy who love legos, and he stores them all in a box, but I knew we need it to come up with a better system for him to enjoy what he actually have and for the legos not to ended up everywhere..Can’t wait to show him this!
Forget the Lego's!!!...How she hangs up her sons shorts and pants has just changed my life!!!! I'm headed to Walmart now for shower curtain hooks for my 11 year olds closet!!!! 😍😉😂
My daughter doesn't have as much as Milo, But I store everything the exact same way as Cathy. I have a file organizer for all the books. We keep all built pieces in clear storage bins and we have the small organizers for all those extra pieces, and shelving to store them. SO cool that I see someone else store the same way. Its always sorted by colour and taken apart. My daughter likes to keep them built to play with.Thank you for sharing! xoxo
My girls just have all their sets mixed and we haven't been able to make them again because if takes so long to find the pieces. This is honestly the best video on Lego storage, so motivated to sort their Lego out now. Thank you
My now grown son, has a huge tub of Legos worth thousands of $$$. When he was growing up I bought him storage drawers from the hardware store that was originally sold to hold nuts and screws to separate his legos, it worked great
Milo has about 5 LEGO friends sets that he found for sale at a garage sale (I think they were $8 for all....crazy right?). He said he didn't care that they were pink because he just wants ALL the LEGOS. 😁
OMG Kathryn! I think you and Kathy must be sisters from another mother! Lol. You guys are both so neat and organized!! I love this idea 💡 because my grandson is really loving LEGOS and we have been just putting them in their box. Thanks Kathryn and Kathy I appreciate the ideas!!!
I actually use an old 3 drawer dresser and solar store bins for my sons legos. We divide the legos by type, people, flat, special, small are in those same little craft boxes, squares, 6 length rectangles and so on. One of the drawers has binders for the instructions and another drawer is for things they've put together and don't want to dismantle. Works pretty well for us.
This system is really cool...if your kids stick to it. I have 3 boys, 11, 9, and 5, and they do not use ANY system I’ve set up for long. They get all into it at first. But days, hours, seconds later, the Legos are everywhere! My kids get the sets, build the sets once, and then never use the instructions to build it the original way again. They love to use their imaginations and build something new from it. Nothing wrong with creativity, but that means Legos everywhere... again. We sorted by color with Sterilite shoe bins from Walmart (a few cents cheaper than Dollar Tree and they last longer) for the ones they all share. Then they have bins for the ones that are just theirs. But it never fails. I’m vacuuming and I hear that familiar rattling up the hose...and I just know I’ve sucked up the mustard-seed-size piece they need to complete their creation! 😜 Major Mom Guilt! 😜 Sorry this vent was long, but can any other mamas relate? 😂 Blessings! Thanks for sharing❣️
I always check the vacuum before dumping it because I've swept up Legos plenty of times. 😊 Milo is crazy about instructions so he likes to keep his sets together until he wants to put them together again, but that system doesn't work for everyone. I agree and LOVE the Walmart Sterilite shoe bins. Cheaper and the lids fit better than the Dollar Tree variety. Perfect!
I can relate! I have one son who likes to create his own things, and another who likes to follow the directions. Both always want to display their creations! So I'll definitely be picking and choosing which ideas work for us!
So much Lego anxiety before getting it all under control. I love Legos as long as they stay contained and in order! :) Now I truly enjoy playing in Milo's room with him without getting overwhelmed with the clutter. Good luck organizing!
This video is sooo awesome! My son has tons of LEGO’s and he and his brother fight over them all the time. They have separate rooms and we don’t have a playroom for them. I just decided to create an area in our hallway and couldn’t figure out what to do about the legos. This is going to help me so much. Saving to my favorites and downloading this video now. Can’t wait to share it with my hubby. 💕💕💕💕💕💕
We have a 13 gallon tote and 2 five gallon totes FULL of legos and my son is only 7!! He just recently expressed the desire to keep his new sets separated so this video is perfect! Believe it or not, I've donated probably about a dozen gallon zip lock baggies of legos to the local school already and need to donate more. He inherited a large collection from an older cousin and has received so many sets as gifts since he was 3. He's autistic and an only child and grandchild on one side of the family....we definitely have a spoiling problem! Thank you for all of your videos. They have helped me so much.
Oh my gosh, this video is such a lifesaver for me. My son's room is also superheroes and he is obsessed with Legos. They're always all over the floor and I've tried different types organization but this one is a good one. Thank you for sharing.
Yay for superhero rooms. We recently made some superhero artwork for Milo's rooms. It's in a video on my channel if you want to check it out. Maybe it will inspire you!
I love these ideas!! My husband worked for the Lego Store for a while and he collected so many sets... Now I can organize them out of the way! Thanks! 😍😍
Love all your videos Katheryn!! So, my 2 boys are HUGE Lego fans. They are 16 and 18 years old now but I bet over the years I have bought way over 100 sets for them. I organize the instruction books a little different than a filing system because we have so many and would have probably filled 3 little filing containers. I use large binders and page protector sleeves to put the instructions in. One book facing the front and one facing the back. We used dividers to separate the different types of sets, City, Bionocle, etc. They have 4 binders chucked full of instruction books now and they live on a shelf in my son's closet. The "binding" of the binder has a label with the types of sets so if they are looking for something specific, they can find it quickly. This has worked like a charm for us over the years!
Very awesome and much needed!!! We just got my daughter’s legos back out after I got overwhelmed a few months ago and threw them all in a closet where she couldn’t get to them. We love LEGO but with pets, her play area being in a living space, and younger cousins coming over all the time we really need a better way of organizing. Loved all these tips!! Thank you ❤️
My kids (now in their 20's) were HUGE Lego fans growing up. They still keep their Lego's at their own houses & my DD has a large tackle box for small parts. I can honestly say I miss those days despite pieces on the floor.
You have some great ideas! Thanks for some hints that will help my going on 13 year old grandson! He has amassed a huge amount of Legos. Plus I have all the Legos my son had growing up and he's now 35! Thanks for sharing
Kathryn great tips as always but can I just say you look amazing!! Loved your outfit too, it’s adorable!! I love your beauty inside and out!! You have a beautiful soul and it shows!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sweet, smiling face!! You really are the best!!❤️❤️
I had to go back and rewatch the video because somehow I missed the excellent way of hanging pants with shower curtain hooks!! :O I wish I had seen this video back when my kids had Legos all over the place!!! :D
I really love those IKEA shelves because as they age they will utilize them for other things like trophies, books, etc. I like when you're organization pieces are able to transition as kids age.
Yassssss! OMG, my little guys are just starting to get into Legos. I have been trying to figure out a workable system for all those little pieces, Thank you!
My son loves LEGO’s too and it drives me nuts when they are all over the place! 😂 We just started organizing sets in shoeboxes as well and we stick the manuals inside so everything is together. We also stick a picture of the set on the shoebox so it’s easy to find. Love this!
We used to store the instructions in the shoe boxes too! We recently changed because it just didn't seem to be working well for us anymore since we were storing multiple sets in each bin. A picture on the front is a great touch!
Kathy Thornburg so far it’s working well. I like the organization and the look makes me feel more sane 😂. Definitely going to try the in progress bins. The boys are always building!
I feel just thinking about this overwhelming. My oldest is 5.5 and I guess he will starr graduating to real lego soon. Right now we just use duplo that all 3 kids can use at the same time without any choking hazards to worry about. The idea of having to corral thousands of pieces of lego has literally made my heart beat faster from anxiousness.
My boys love, love, love legos. I’ve used dollar tree bins for the past year (thanks to you!) and they’ve worked out well. I like the storage bin with the sliding drawers. I should get one of those as well.
My grandson is ALL Lego! Star Wars, Batman, Ninjago, you name it! Instead of getting him MORE Legos for Christmas, I thought I'd help my daughter out and make/buy him a cool Lego storage/play area. Some great ideas here!
You rock! Such a life saver. My boys favorite thing in the world is LEGO and it’s like an ameba, spreads everywhere quickly! 😂... I had seen all those lego organization idea in Pinterest and the only one that I thought might work long term was the rug with the string but my kids have so many that wouldn’t even come close to enough to solve the issue. And they love to keep them in sets so the clear shoe boxes is perfect!!!! So may great ideas here, I feel like a new woman already just thinking about all those legos actually properly stored 😂
I love LEGOS too! Having kids gives me a way to enjoy all the fun things about childhood all over again. Kite flying....sidewalk chalk...puzzles. You name it! 😁
I love this, we use gallon sized freezer bags to store individual sets inside of a large tote from target, then the free play pieces get put into 2 smaller (shoe box sized) yellow bins.
Wow -- sooo organized! My son loves legos. For a long time it was tough for us to decide what to let him "reimagine" into something else but generally decided we'd let him with any set worth $25 or less. More expensive sets get left together and put on display. (he has put together a few huge/expensive sets like the milennium falcon and the police station) We have way too much now to try to reassemble some of the sets with out it being WAY too much work, especially since he's not super interested in that either :) Generally we have "free build bins" (including some of those lay and play mats) and "display pieces" and nothing in between, despite my attempts at it a few times to break it down further (I have tried "by type" and those legos just get ignored! haha). I have kept the books just in case a larger set breaks and we need to figure out how to repair, or he decides he wants to try and reassemble some of the "reimagined creations" someday. For now I just try not to let it bug me that it's all mixed together :D
I have a daughter with autism that absolutely loves Lego but always manages to lose pieces. The lunch box was such a great idea for her to do wherever and whenever! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
My daughter just got into Legos so for right now all of hers can be stored in one of those large Tupperware bins from the dollar tree. And she too likes hers stored completed.
Lego organisation for kids - and big kids too! Every year since my sons were relatively young they have had a Lego advent calendar every December! They still get one and they're in their 20s, I've started getting one for myself too lol! I love them! Thought the Lego picture frame was a good idea! My eldest son sometimes buys a Lego magazine if it has star wars space ships as free gifts - he is studying aeronautical engineering in university and wants to major in space craft design - obviously not building the real models out of Lego 😂 Whenever I visit my parents I sometimes go to the Lego shop in their city, and there are more adults than children!
Great tips. We've tried most of those systems and nothing has worked to contain or corral the Legos, except to organize them by color in those free-standing clear plastic drawer sets. I have learned that the organization of Legos is about the kid more than anything else, but that's because my kid has a photographic memory when it comes to Legos and he knows exactly the color and shape of the piece he's looking for when building. We tried to organize them by sets, didn't last because he just has too many and they get mixed up. They just do. We tried the Cinch sack playmat which worked GREAT for a while, until he had more Legos than the sack could contain. My kid has had Legos for 5 years now and the one thing I have learned is to keep the organization simple so that they are free to be as creative as they can possibly be.
My daughter is 3 and is all about Duplos. I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before she graduates to regular Legos! This is chock full of great ideas because I dread the day that I might have to start walking the parent fire walk...aka, floor of Legos! LOL!
Awesome ideas. My son loves legos! I love the in progress bin idea. They usually live in my island in the kitchen until he is done or I can't look at it anymore.
My boys both loved Lego’s growing up, we had a huge canister that we just stored them all in! This was YEARS before dollar stores. As they grew into awesome young men, the Legos stayed in the canister and every once in awhile I would drag out that canister and play and build and I always had a great tint, all by myself! Now, I’m entering my 60’s, the canister was given away years ago but one Walmart shopping day I wandered through the toy section, actually my favorite section of the store! And what did I see but Elves, yep, Lego Elves...no one was looking, so I slipped a small Elves set in my basket! I remember thinking, “who are you hiding these from?” I didn’t know, it just felt sneaky! I started buying sets from Lego online, after I became a VIP! I absolutely LOVE all of my Legos! I have all the boxes and directions which I keep in each box in a chest at the end of my bed! My sons found out about my stash and we laughed ourselves silly! Now, they, in their late 30’s and my oldest, 43, surprise me with sets from collections, keychains, the bags you can purchase with one of the little people in them! You are never ever too old to love and play with Lego’s or toys in general! The ideas in this video are awesome and I’m hoping to incorporate a few myself! Thanks for bringing such wonderful ideas to the table! ❤️
I bet he does! I was watching and she said here is Milo and I thought...that looks like Kathy's Milo! What a cute organized room he has too! Great job!
Me too!! I am SO sick of legos everywhere in my house because my step-daughters want to carry them around. My dog found one that they, the vacuum, and I missed, and it wasn't super pretty. The new rule is they have to be corralled, and this seems like the perfect way (without barricading them in their play room!)
We love Lego! My husband and daughter have so much between them. I have a tall unit where we display built models and a trofast unit from ikea where unused/unbuilt sets are stored in ziplock bags with the instruction booklet and a big mixed box of bricks at the bottom for creative play. We also gave Lego base boards glued on the top for a play surface. I loved the tips for storing specialist pieces as my husband is always sifting through a huge box looking for those. We are also looking into building a mini figure display area. Xxx
We used to spend a LOT of time sifting and searching for just the right piece. It's so nice to be able to find the pieces we need quicker with our new system. :)
We’ve got a LEGO fiend at our house! Some great tips here. We’ve got clear dollar tree bins with the lids that are attached and we store in sets. His sister is started her LEGO love now so storage and organization is super key!
Milo has a little sister too that is starting to leave behind the DUPLOS and enter the classic LEGO sets now. I'm wondering if she will be as into LEGOS as he has been. 🙂
This was super helpful. I didn't know how to manage my son's legos but I like all these tips. Especially about the directions, he gets so upset when they get torn
I think it’s so cool that I came across this video today as we are stuck in the house due to heavy rain and had already planned to get all of my eight-year-old Legos organized. Luckily I already have tons of dollar tree bins to get this project started so I am super excited!
OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I am tired of them being all over the floor and we won't even talk about the foot injuries 🙄 We will be working on this this weekend.
I've also used a plastic pencil box. Glue the square on to the lid so it is easier to build on. The flat square pieces that get broken, and we all know that they do, are perfect for making these travel boxes.
Awesome video... my son is the LEGO master lol! We have a shelf that goes around 3 walls at the top of his room with his LEGO master pieces and the tower with drawers as well. So a tip for any one trying to dust LEGO ... use a paint brush only for dusting, perfect for LEGO or anything bumpy 😍
Great tip! Dusty LEGO sets make me cringe. Never thought of a paintbrush. Plus then I can feel like a detective looking for clues or a dinosaur bone excavator. 😆
I'm glad all those sets weren't available when my son was a Lego fanatic! I would've went broke! lol He had regular old building blocks and one of the mats that fit on the play table in his room. I used a 3-drawer cart to put all his pieces in.
