Dolly is not only the original singer, she wrote it. It went #1 x 3 (when she recorded it, when she sang it in Best Little Whorehouse and when she recorded it with Vince Gill). She sang it to the guy you see at the end named Porter Wagner. Her contract was ended and she wanted to leave, but Porter didn't want her to so she wrote him this song to say Goodbye.
I like the reaction, I think the reason I prefer this version is Dolly wrote it for somebody and meant every word, the sincerity of this performance is a message to somebody. Whitney's version is about technical singing with passion and power Dolly's is more of a genuine heartfelt message sang with genuine compassion.
Your lovely reaction made me smile and subscribe! Dolly Parton wrote this song and is also one of the kindest people I know of. She has created hundreds of jobs for poor people through Dollywood and has given poor children over 100 MILLION books through her Imagination Library. She does this in memory of her father, who never had the chance to learn to read and write. She has written well over 3,000 songs, like "9 to 5", "Coat of Many Colors," "Jolene," plays many instruments and has acted in movies
I think because Dolly wrote the song that her version is so much more emotional, 💕yet soft. Whitney gave more of a powerhouse reedition of it. Dolly has it all - lyrical genius, gorgeous pure voice, a great sense of humour, beauty and brains, yet despite 50+yrs of fame, she has remained humble and incredibly kind She stayed true to her roots - grew up dirt poor in a shack in Tennessee - her song 'Coat Of Many Colours' really makes you appreciate the poverty of her childhood. Dolly's an astute businesswoman but has always used her fame/wealth to help others - check out her charity 'Imagination Library' - she gives million's of books a year to disadvantaged kids worldwide. She wrote ‘Jolene’ & 'I Will Always Love You' on the same day(!) Her most famous song is 'Jolene' - I've loved this song since I was a small child - Mum said I would make her play it on repeat! Another amazing song of Dolly's is 'Back From Dover' - again, her storytelling abilities shine through 💕 😭
Whitney made me smile and aww a bit, + big power notes, great job, beautiful voice and one for the ages to be sure ... Dolly made me cry with the power of her notes no matter how big or small. That wavering country lilt is just her and so genuine. Therefore, Epic classic, I'll put her 1st and Whitney 2nd as it is (Chronologically speaking) and should be (Sheer light of heart and talent). You just can't not be moved by Dolly no matter what she does, such a genuine soul. I can't think of any time in my life (50) that anyone has anything bad to say about Dolly. I am a metal head by and large, but there is always a place for good music no matter what genre it is. She always delivers.
I've heard she said in an interview that she put a lot of money in the bank from that song and when whitney sang it she bought the bank :D surely just kidding but she earned a lot of royalty from whitney's version. Elvis Presley wanted to sing this too, but Elvis' manager or something wanted the right for the song too, Dolly wouldn't part with it so we didn't get an Elvis version.
"I Will Always Love You" is a song written and originally recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. ... Whitney Houston recorded her version of the song for the 1992 film The Bodyguard. Dolly Parton was expected to earn millions in royalties from Houston's version.

Could you please two more songs also written and sung by Dolly Parton called, "A Coat of Many Colors" and another one called, "Me and Little Andy". Thank you so very, very much. Also for your reactions and opinions of her works. They mean so much to me.
This live version you must watch Charice Pempengco Filipino girl I Will Always Love You (Whitney Tribute) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_IyZlh-iMXw.html She is out of this world at doing Whitney also Celine songs p/s Charice is now called Jake.
Even though Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagner. He sued her over the publishing rights to some of the songs she sang on his show. He won the suit. Many years later, he had to sell the songs because he was broke. Dolly bought the songs back from him, then, turned around and gave them back to him. She has very beautiful heart.
