FILM DESCRIPTION:
Miss Mona (Dolly Parton) runs the Chicken Ranch, a brothel with a long history in a small Texas town. The locals have a good relationship with the institution, and Mona is respected in the community. The sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd (Burt Reynolds), also looks out for the Chicken Ranch due to his past with Miss Mona. However, when pious reporter Melvin Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) exposes the brothel, outside interests want it shut down, putting the governor (Charles Durning) in a tough spot.

Whitney's version changes the timing of the chorus phrasing, and honestly I think it's an improvement. It is very impressive though that Dolly wrote this herself!

Actually Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagnor. He got Dolly started in her fame and she wanted to do her own thing after I think 12 years and they was dedicated to Porter saying she was moving on to her own record deal without his name in it.

I’m only 20 but I’ve known this was Dollys song since I was a child. My grandmother and my mother adore Dolly Parton and raised me the same way. I’ve always loved the Dolly version more than the Whitney cover, it’s always made me feel more emotion than the Whitney version (which is also amazing, they’re both such phenomenal singers)

I loved that song and knew it off by heart years before The Bodyguard and Whitney's cover came out. Whitney certainly does it justice with the power of her voice, but I'll always prefer Dolly singing the song, particularly here where she puts so much meaning into it. Brings tears to my eyes every time.

That's because Dolly sang the song with her heart. Whitney's rendition, while technically more perfect, just doesn't have the emotions that Dolly put into both versions of her song. Even Kristin Chenoweth's new cover, while pretty, doesn't have nearly the emotion that Dolly's versions do.

When Dolly was cast in the film adaptation of the stage show 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas', they added the song - I guess because it fitted so well. Dolly was okay with Whitney's later cover because she ended up making at least $10 million from it. Good business decision!

Whitney Houston's vocals on this song are nothing less than brilliant. Who can hear it without marveling at her depth, her range, her phrasing, her mastery of every note? And yet, when Dolly sings the song she wrote, it just clutches your heart, it brings a tear. There is no substitute for the genuine emotion she brings to the song she composed. Her subtler heartfelt rendition - to me - is even more powerful than the soaring voice of Whitney Houston.

I am an old Southern Lady. Dolly wrote that song to Porter Wagner. Dolly was on his show . I remember it being shown in Alabama. Dolly was leaving Porter Wagner’s show. Dolly knew what to do. I was only 10 when I watched this TV movie and I fell in love with this song, so much that when I found the soundtrack cassette at the music store, I purchased it right away. I did a double take when I heard Whitney sing those first few words. The song was written by Dolly as a breakup song of sorts. It was a professional breakup with Porter Wagoner. She appeared on his show for about five years singing solo and duets with Wagoner. They started having professional arguments because she wanted to go out on her own, but he wasn't ready to let her go from the show. He was being very stubborn about it, so she wrote the song and came back into the office and sang it for him. Porter, overcome with emotion said, 'Well, hell! If you feel that strong about it, just go on - providing I get to produce that record because that's the best song you ever wrote.'" After Dolly left the show, Wagoner produced her Album Jolene with this song on it. Dolly would later sing this song in the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in a scene with the late and great Burt Reynolds. To quote the late Paul Harvey, “Now you know…the rest of the story.”

Ed Earl and Miss Mona truly loved eachother but they were scared of what everyone would think if their relationship was public. So what I say is love is love, you can't change that, love who you want to love who gives a crap about how other or what other people think/view your relationship, do what make you happy stick with it. When Ed Earl gave up his dream for the love of his life, it goes to show, you'll have so many opportunities life will throw your way, but there is only one person you'll truly, truly love and you can't let them go.

This has been my favorite movie since I was just a child 4-5yrs I remember sitting by the tv with my tape recorder recording all the songs, then I would spin around on my sit n spin and sing this along for hours…my other favorite was love on the rocks with Neil diamond.

Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagner. She was leaving his show to pursue her solo career. It was her way of saying thank you for giving her her start and sh will always love him and be grateful to him. They remained friends after it.

This song is so emotional even though it's cut short this is my favorite version of the song. I love the whole song Bally's version because of the history of behind the song and she wrote the song for Porter Wagoner when she left the show and there was a lot of animosity at the time and she she just wrote her feelings about him that she needed to leave for the porter Wagner show she would always love him and be grateful but she needed to leave and be on her own it's really emotional
