@@christopherhughes9787 I thought I saw it on Groupon, but I just searched there and could only find: "Hey Dolly, you can keep him. -Jolene" I thought it was the other way around, but I could be remembering it wrong, or maybe both versions exist (if so, not sure which I like better). Do a search on Groupon for "womens southern tees", or just try googling both phrases and see what all merch comes up. Good luck!
She is a National Treasure, singer/songwriter, actor, music/film producer, philanthropist! she is the real deal! From Appalachian poverty to superstardom, she's never forgotten where she came from, the place or the people! Love her!
She is an amazing woman. Her drive for literacy has improved the lives of millions. Try her “I will always love you” she created it years before WH sang it.
Dolly Parton sends my baby a new book every month, just because he exists and she is awesome. Dolly is one of the kindest, most talented, decent people in the history of the music industry.
Dolly is an American icon, an absolute treasure. She is not only so talented, she's sweet, she's kind, she's generous, she's humble and has a great sense of humor (we all love her laugh). So many good songs.
Coat of Many Colors, an iconic song from Dolly. Tells a great story of a girl from a poor family who made the best with what they had or could afford, not unlike her own childhood.
Dolly Parton is a legend. Writes her own songs, impeccable songs. Great guitarist. Perfect voice. Funny, giving, you name it, Dolly does it. And she's like 75 and still sings perfect!
Another rabbit hole you can explore. Dolly has a career spanning over 50 years and still going strong. She has a great sense of humor and sponsors a reading program.
She sponsors a HUGE reading program here in Tennessee. She also sponsors several collage young adults. My freshman year at Hiwassee College I knew of at least 4 there with full Dolly Scholarships. She pretty much owns the Smokey Mtns, but she has really gave alot back, BUT DAMN the poor man can not afford to go to her theme park. When it first opened yes, but over the last 15 yrs no. However as much as she has added I see why. She does pay her employees well. I will be curious to see what she does for them during this virus plague. She recently lost her right hand man Kenny..... 🎵🎵🎵🎵Islands in the stream🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵 I hate country music, but love the lyrics. I hate the twang and I am as country hick as u can get
Dolly's songs are widely covered by other artists. The biggest one is probably Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You", which is autobiographical. She has some of the most elaborate and expensive wigs, and doesn't hide the fact her own hair is rarely seen.
I was thinking about cover songs and that Jamel could do a series of the same song by different artists. Like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", which has been covered many artists, including: Judy Garland Ella Fitzgerald Israel Kamakawiwo'ole Billy Thorpe Ray Charles
Dolly has said "I Will Always Love You" was written as a farewell to her former partner and mentor of seven years, Porter Wagoner, following Parton's decision to leave their duo.
She wrote Jolene on the same day she wrote "I Will Always Love You" most famously covered by Whitney Houston. She remains one of the best songwriters ever.
Not underrated by me. I think she ranks with Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro as among the top female songwriters. I understand she has more song copyrights than Irving Berlin.
At first glance, many people might think Dolly is just an overstuffed blonde...she is transparent, talented and a true American treasure! You have heard of Dollywood, haven't you? That's her...
Ahhh! I can't stop watching Jamel! It is such a treat and a pleasure to see him appreciate so many songs that I grew up with. Love to see the genuine enjoyment of him listening to these great artists, and appreciate them as truly gifted.
Deborah 78. This is also a true story. She tells it in the live performance. Jolene was a bank teller, and her husband, Carl, was spending a lot of time there, flirting with her.
"Jolene" is utterly different from any other cheatin' song I know of. In any other song, the woman is either confronting the man, or declaring that she will out-compete the other woman. Often, she's telling her man to get lost if he wants somebody else. This is utterly different. This is the worst "cheatin' song" situation to be in: you DO want him to stay, and you KNOW that you can't compete, and all you can do is to plead with the other woman and hope she has enough sympathy to back off. Only Dolly Parton could have written this song. And BTW, if Jolene is so hot that *a young Dolly Parton* feels outclassed, then Jolene is one smokin' hot babe!
When I was a kid I watch Dolly Parton on TV with Porter Wagner and then I seen Dolly go off on her own you know I seen all this before my eyes yes she's what can you say amazing amazing amazing amazing voice
I found you recently and have never seen someone as you and how you feel and love the music. Your appreciation of music helps me to see the value in song.
neth ; nethanel mas ; masters Hey, Neth - I said Dolly is Miley’s GODMOTHER. Dolly has no children. I’d send Google pic that says this, but can’t figure out how to attach picture. Guess we’re both having a good night 🙃🚬🙃
For everybody who keeps saying the bank teller was named Jolene... you're mistaken. She has said this NUMEROUS times in interviews ! .... This is her interview from NPR: "One night, I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl - she was probably 8 years old at the time," Parton says. "And she had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph. I said, 'Well, you're the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?' And she said, 'Jolene.' And I said, 'Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene.' I said, 'That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I'm going to write a song about that.'" Parton says that she got the story for her song from another redhead in her life at the time - a bank teller who was giving Parton's new husband a little more interest than he had coming. "She got this terrible crush on my husband," Parton says. "And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us - when I was saying, 'Hell, you're spending a lot of time at the bank. I don't believe we've got that kind of money.' So it's really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one."
But she said that song was about the female bank manager that she had fight with then she went home and kick her husband butt. It on RU-vid she tell she was messing with him when she was on the road.
This song made Dolly Parton a household name. If you want to hear the song that made her a legend check out 9 to 5, title song to the great movie she also started in with Lilly Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman.
Jamel, check out Fist City by Loretta Lynn; it’s basically the exact opposite of Jolene. “Ok, try to steal my man, but I’m gonna knock your damn teeth out”
The important line in this song is "just because you can". Jolene doesn't want her man, she just wants to exercise her power and take something of someone else's so that they don't have it, to be selfish and hurtful for the sake of her own ego.
The riff and vocals have such a chilling quality and there’s so much longing in the lyrics... it’s downright hauntingly good. Love watching it impact you. You GET it :) :)
When the town of Gatlinburg nearly burned to the ground and so many people were left jobless and homeless this woman jumped in a made a difference. Dolly rocks!
The power of music to bring people together never fails to amaze me. I love Dolly and have known this song for a very, very long time. It's a classic for sure and never grows old. Dolly would love this video. I hope she sees it. God bless!!
@@justingarrett1675 You would be right if referring to the album titled Jolene. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jolene" is a song written and performed by American country music artist Dolly Parton. It was released on October 15, 1973 as the first single and title track from her album of the same name, produced by Bob Ferguson. Jolene is the thirteenth solo studio album by Dolly Parton. It was released on February 4, 1974, by RCA Victor.
Every woman knows where her man's brain is, not in his head most of the time, Dolly is a smart cookie, and this is one of the best lovesongs of the last century.
Great number... In 1981 Barbara Mandrell put out a live concert album with a song called Unsung Heroes on it... In light of our current situation with covid 19, this in my opinion has just become the number one relevant song... It's a great up beat song that gives credit to all the unsung heroes in our country('s)... Barbara Mandrell live - Unsung Heroes....
You should hear the slowed down vocal track, it is amazing. You can hear every vocal turn and trill that you don't have time to react to in this version.
When the wildfires hit and Gatlinburg TN was in trouble Dolly was there to help everyone! She wrote the checks that paid the bills until we got everything going again. People love her because of her amazing talent and the type of person she is. Here in the mountains of Tennessee she will always be our girl and we will always love her and be proud of her. Great video keep them coming 👍
It was written during a different time period. Women used to stick by their husbands even through crap no human should have to suffer through. Husbands with bad wives did the same. Particularly here in Appalachia where lots of old school highly religious women and men are. People in these parts (even these days) tend take "for better or worse, for richer or for poorer, and until death do us part" WAY more serious than other areas of the country. Hell I myself stuck with a "not so good woman" for 28 years. I finally divorced her when she started stealing money from our little grandkids and performing "side activities" (if you get my drift) to help fund her damned opiate pill addiction. Even with those happenings being pretty well known by everyone around us some of the elder people in both our families were still like "your DIVORCING your wife??!!". It was like I was talking about planning a mass murder or something lol. Some of them STILL aren't talking to me and it's been 5 years since the divorce. Imagine what getting divorced/separated would have been like BACK IN THE DAY.
@@waynepurcell6058 I get it, much of my family is from the Appalachia, as well as apostolic. Lots of those folks are still married to people wrong for them for that exact reason. I was pointing out my "current times" reaction to a wife begging her husband's mistress to please just stop. 😉
You should check out Dolly Parton's other song's such as " Coat of Many Colors ", I will Always Love You, Bargain Store, Life is like a Butterfly, Blue Smoke, Tennessee Mountain Home, and her duet with Kenny Roger's Island in the Stream .
She's a virtuoso when it comes to playing so many instruments. She's an amazing singer and prolific songwriter, and she's completely self taught. A true savant. She wrote "I Will Always Love You". Here's a link to a performance of her and the great Vince Gill singing it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hqZwPH0wQGk.html. Please react to her and Kenny Rogers singing "Islands in the Stream".
Dolly is one of my favorite country singers so glad you liked it. Just loved watching you listen. Her music touches my heart dude❤❤❤I'm a new subscriber to your channel for this!!! Damnnn dayummmm😂🤣I saw her ten years ago in concert she was in her mid 60's and she sings just like a recording, she's freaking amazeballs!!!
Her voice is so delicate and vulnerable, something that few artists can get away with. This era worships belters, which is fine. We just need a place for this type of voice. Go, Miss Dolly.
She wore so many wigs, her hair was always different and pretty...I heard her say on David Letterman one time, it takes a lot of money to make me look so cheap. I always thought Dolly was beautiful and a great singer.
Dolly explained this song: Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” was a combination of a flirty bank teller, her husband making too many runs to the bank, and a fan with just the right name. Parton tells the story of the innocent flirtation that turned into a story and a hit: “She got this terrible crush on my husband,” Parton explains. Dolly has been married to her husband, Carl Dean for over 50 years (a marriage of convenience) and Carl chose to stay home on the farm, while Dolly had "another life". Dolly has said that Carl doesn't interfere with her life, as long as he doesn't have to hear about it. So they have an open marriage..
There is a show on Netflix that has each episode based on Dolly Parton songs...i think its call Dolly Partons Heartstrings..its best show ..especially if you love Dolly!!!❤🎼❤🎼
Such a real person. Never forgot where she came from. And what a voice so expressive and such a talent. Amazing lady. Friend of mine works with the raptors ( eagles, owls , hawks) at Dollywood and says she is actually as nice as she seems.
I worker security for her concert at mtn view.... I HAD to see her do this song..I’ve been listening to this since I was 5.... she was shining head to toe, I swear...and she sounded pitch perfect!!!😱 plucking away at that same guitar nails and all!! AmazingI love Ms Dolly... her song “ me and lil Andy” 😭😭😭😭
@@trudycolborne2371, Dolly was a natural blonde, you're forgetting that she was in the public eye from a young age. As she got older and made more money she never tried to lie about her appearance.
@@bcaye So if I lose my teeth I shouldn't get dentures? If I get thin hair when I'm old I shouldn't wear a wig? You can follow your advice but I think I'll avoid going out bald and toothless despite your opinion.
Dolly released Jolene in 1973-74. Jolene was way ahead of its time! When you listen to country music from that time it was twangy and heavy with steel guitars. Jolene had bongo drums and that ever famous guitar lick! Then you realize she is doing her own harmonies!
I grew up listening to mom always listening to Dolly in her Jeep Wagoneer, she was her favorite and she really liked the song she did called ‘Me & Little Andy”. It was a tear jerker song.
