Mezzo-Soprano Dolora Zajick sing's Eboli's veil song "Nel giardin del bello saracin ostello" from Verdi's Don Carlo at the opening of the season at Teatro alla Scala, December 7, 2008.
I heard her in amneris at the met just earlier this year. And at 67, she produces a wall of sound that pins you to the back of your seat. Yet always carefully controlled to express the musical purposes.
This is beautiful.. as usual. Her voice is exceptional.. and how many mezzo's do you know that can convincingly do High A natural's Pianissimo.. and make them sound right?
I find this a very intelligent approach to a very difficult scene (and a scene I rrreeeally dislike). It proves what a great singer Zajick is. She manages to scale her huge voice down and lighten it after all those years to sing the coloratura well and the dynamics superbly. I youtubed a few of the famous interpreters of the role and confirmed that I'm rarely equally satisfied by the veil song and o don fatale but Zajick ticks both boxes even though Cossotto remains the finest Eboli in my books.
She is without equal. Also, imagine how it must feel to be the costume designer and the workers who constructed all them gorgeous dresses. I'll bet if that's your field and you see the final project on stage like this, you feel like a million bucks.
Now this is an Eboli for me. Shirley Verrett's coloratura work in this aria is hard to come anywhere near I would agree partially with one comment. But Zajick's has enough agility for certain passages I think, a perfectly playful "stella." I love all of her musical dynamics here, her piano and above all l just love to death the color of her voice in the low register like no other, its like the warm sun on nude skin. Stunning! As an actress she's first class here as always. Someone defined her performance as "restrained" and I concur, and love her for that. This type of subtle eroticism is the most effective type, I think of the allure a Catherine Deneuve would employ. The way she reaches for the veil of that beautiful woman around 2:22 as she glides on the note, is the heart and soul of what I am trying to describe. She performs the staccatti a little slower, but with added sensuality. I really love Ebolis like Zajick with a realistic and not hammy or coquettish characterization. She is elegant and full of longing. I also think she looks convincingly as the Spanish aristocracy and her era, she looks something like what I would imagine Caterina of Aragon to be in the mature of her life, with the auburn hair. Whatever will her O Don Fatale be? I imagine that will be the real treasure trove for he dramatic voice. Thanks for the video! Of the complete filmed productions of Carlo some of my other favorites are Elena Obraztsova and Patricia Johnson.
Oh, so this is what Verdi would have wanted? Not Verrett, Cossotto, Simionato. THIS! You are insane, all of you! Zajic was good in this 15 years ago, not anymore. Open your ears!
You are absolutely right. Muffled voice, "smeared" diction, wobble all over, poor trill, and if not for the orchestra one would not know this is " spanish" music.
@@avihuboneh723and the entire time she sings with this constricted closed mouth, or pointed mouth that distorts every sound that comes out of her mouth. It sounds awful. There is some brilliance there in tone but everything is ruined by the wobble and the singing through a clenched mouth
