Dolphins Help Fishermen Catch Fish

Wild dolphins in the coastal town of Laguna, Brazil have formed a strong symbiotic bond with fishermen working in the bay. The dolphins herd schools of fish towards the shoreline and then give distinct signals telling the fishermen when to cast nets.

I live about 1 hour from that place. This form of fishing requires a lot of skill from the fisherman in such a way that it is not enough to have a fishing license, the fisherman needs to be well trained by his elders and dolphins. An unqualified person who injures or kills a dolphin can be sentenced to up to 6 years in prison. These dolphins are considered a local treasure.

MikeAbdulla of course they dont need it. and neither do humans, thats why the seas are running out of fish. but in this case, the dolphins work in team with the humans because their net throwing makes it easier for them to catch fish, because the fish have to scatter.
@stegomasaurus6737
@stegomasaurus6737 6 лет назад
I like how it appears as though the dolphins had at least as much of a hand in this scheme as the humans, if not more. I sincerely doubt that some fishermen went out one day with the full intention of domesticating dolphins. My theory is the dolphins saw some fishermen working, quickly noticed that they could get a ton of food by catching the fish that escape the nets, and so over time the dolphins and humans developed a routine which got more and more coordinated and therefore more efficient with time. Mutualistic relationships like this between different species are one of my favorite things to observe in nature because I just love seeing the combination of intelligence and communication involved with both parties.

FlyingMonkies325 yup, probably the dolphin start to anticipate the throw of the net and a fisher men forgot to throw and the dolphin dive anyway. Then realizing the dolphin knew when the fisher men will throw the net. So why not let the dolphin décide when the net should be thrown ? I suppose the dolphin deduct the more fish they can heard for the thing the more fish can escape and I can have an easy catch .

When I lived in Florida many years ago, there was a dolphin sanctuary that catered to kids with specials needs and to sick people. The dolphins would place their rostrum’s exactly on the affected area that was hurting and in effect, pinpointing the ailment. It was so incredible to watch this. The people would then get medical test performed and sure enough, the dolphins were correct. Dolphins are such extraordinary creatures.

I often go to Laguna to surfboard in its amazing and beautiful beaches. I can clearly see how respectfully the locals treat ocean life, it's humbling and it incentives us to do the same, also the humpback whales love that place to mate and aren't afraid of humans so we can surfboard right next to them and watch these gentle giants jump and have fun. Dolphins are even bolder and come very close to see what we're doing, sometimes knocking us out of our boards just because. That region of Brazil is blessed without a doubt.

Watching this video we have to appreciate intelligence and bond these magnificent sea mammals have with humans. Out there are numerous stories about dolphins helping humans. 1970 I was in navy and I remember our captain of the ship told us that in Navi it is strictly forbidden to harass dolphins and jail sentence was looming if anyone would deliberately hurt dolphins. We loved their presence when they would cut through ship wake and making different sounds when jumping out of water. During winter storms we were looking if there were dolpnereby as officers told us that they would instantly help if someone goes overboard. Magnificent animals I love them dearly.

In some parts of China, fishermen have also established this relationship with dolphins. Usually, after the dolphins herd the school of fish in the shore, the fishermen would give them a part of what they caught to the dolphins. It's absolutely amazing and beautiful really.

For me, it is nice because dolphins and humans are both taking advantages. Dolphins cannot eat all those fish, so it is good to share those fish to humans so that both dolphins and humans can take advantages.

I was raised down around Jekyll Island as a kid and we would go seining with nets at certain tides. The dolphins would swim around us eating the fish and shrimp in our nets. It's was kinda of scary if it was dark and you are up to your shoulders in the water and all the sudden something bumps you. I would pray it was just the dolphins. You could never be sure until you heard them take a breath and squeak. I loved being raised around that area. My dad is a fisherman and we were always around a body of water. Especially if mom was working on the weekends and dad was babysitting. It got us all out of the house and around nature. He would wake us in the morning and say if we got our housework done quickly we would go to the rive or beach. You've never seen kids get chores done faster. I was lucky to have him as a father. Even to this day his happiest moments are on a boat with us grown kids. He has no greater joy than to see one of us Wipeout on a tube or skis! 😂 😂

if you knew anything about history you would have not made that comment. Dolphins all throughout our history have coincided along beside us and help our human ancestors feed their colonies and their villages. it is proven fact that dolphins do help gather fish and they do help in more than just that. Won't you pick up a book sometime it might help

This video is amazing. It seems the dolphins have figured out how to use the fisherman to their advantage also. While the dolphins herd the mullet towards the fisherman, the fisherman push the mullets towards the dolphins with their casting nets, a win-win. Now if I could only train our local dolphins to do the same for me here in the Gulf of Mexico, where I fish :-)

there is no real help. the dolphins push the fishes to the shore and the men create a wall so the fiches don't get too close to the beach. the dolphins eat the fish without having to be in danger of getting to close to the shore and the men use their nets to catch fishes. fortunately the dolphins are satisfied with only some fishes so it does not bother them to have the men catch the lots of fishes. it is in the interests of the dolphins to not help them to much so the fishermen will come more often. or maybe the dolphins don't cafe, they could do it close to the beach sometimes
@seleniaactimel
@seleniaactimel 8 лет назад
Nets restrict and panic fishes way more than the shore alone does. The dolphin makes a specific movement to signal the best time for the fishermen to throw the nets. So they are helping each other, it's not a case where men are just taking advantage, the dolphins are actively participating. It's good mutualism. Cooperative and complex behaviours between species are not uncommon.

Am I the only one here seeing whats really happening? The dolphins are herding fishes to feed (which is what they do) and the fishermen whom have studied what signals to look for in dolphin's behavior are capitalizing on the dolphin's work. There is no outright willful collaboration happening here. I don't see the fishermen tossing some of their catch back to the dolphins as payment for teamwork. Also they did say the dolphins are wild.
@iandalonso
@iandalonso 8 лет назад
3:10 apparently when the nets are thrown it pushes some of the fish back in the direction of the dolphins, making it easier for the dolphins to catch them as well.

The end result may look like collaboration but that is purely unintended. Its more of an exploit. Happens in nature a lot and happens more often with humans. You might as well agree that whales feeding on bait fish have established some type of working agreement with seagulls dive bombing the same school of bait fish.
