Exploring the history and weirdness of the Domain in Hobart, Tasmania. Patreon www.patreon.com/user?u=5186695 Twitter / angusthornett Instagram / angusthornett
This is the 50th video covering the history and mystery of Hobart and surrounds is up now on RU-vid. Thanks to everyone who has watched the channel. Audience enthusiasm has meant a great deal. Extra thanks to the generosity of Patreon members. It's rather humbling. I'd also like to publicly thank Ken Zebra, who initially and perpetually encouraged me to produce videos. Without his unfounded confidence in me I literally would not have begun. If I could talk to the animals, I'd thank Harry and Dolly (RIP). If I had a time machine, I'd like for them to meet and play. In my mind they are as good friends to each other as they have been to me. And to Mum, the most important and consistent person across my lifetime.
Dear Angus, #A subtle missive! The volumes of words you hear from that not known nor understood come from the animals that look not only at you in eye,but also peer in the covers they reside sharing in essence all they behold transcended too YOU uptaken sometimes unaware from where this "innate inner voice" came from! Stalwarts of this realm we are , and to attempt to not do so to those in misunderstanding not fathomed in ourselves is an injustice to self alone. You my friend hear, listen and express same similar in subtle ways to this your audience in video we see! Continue my friend....... continue ❤️✔️
The views and support you get speak to the amazing work you do, shedding light on the lore, backalleys and backwoods of our sleepy, southern town. I could barely believe it when I ran into you one day, walking the dog on Max's loop! Local legend, unshrouding local legends!
I always enjoyed the Domain, it was a great place to be as I lived in Nth Hobart, you showed a lot of history I was not aware of. Congratulation on 50 videos, great work.
I have learnt more about Hobart's history from your hard work and research that has gone into the videos on your channel than I have for any other source, thank you Angus!
@@angusthornettare you at any stage intending to stray north, and cover some history up this way, myself, and many others would be grateful and interested…
Hi Angus. The domain was my old stomping ground throughout my earlier years. I learnt to drive up there before they shut the middle road. There was a flying fox in the park up on top of the hill, it was always in use. My father took us to the water tanks every year to watch the fireworks at the Regatta, it was a popular place to view them . Lets not forget the dog training every Sunday morning. The old Olympic pool was where we played every weekend through the summer. We used to catch the train from New Town station to the city. I was young when the trains stopped and remember being very disappointed to not ride on them any more. Lots of memories. Thanks for your excellent videos. I learn something new every time you and the dog go on your walkabout.
Thanks, glad you're getting something from them. So many of the things you've mentioned are gone now. But everything goes away in the end. You experienced it and that's the most that can be done.
Thank you for all your hard work and research for putting these amazing videos together Angus. I’ll be honest. It’s been over 20 years since I left Tassie and your channel makes me miss Hobart more than ever.
Thank you Angus for another precious gem. The Domain was a place we were made to play soccer on at 8am Saturday in the middle of winter, then a few years later wagging school for a day here and there up on the Domain. I had a boat shed for a few years at the slips; their all gone now, unfortunately. Appreciated, is the slow development, mostly luck, and partly good planning. I hope the Derwent Sea Scouts can find a permanent home there soon. We are all fortunate to have access to such a place here in Tassie.
Angus, this your 50th video related to Hobart history was fascinating, well researched while leaving us so well educated in Tasmania’s beautiful capitol. Thank you for your on going work to produce these great points of history.👏
Missed the AC/DC concert by 6 hours on my first return to living in Tasmania, as kids in the 80’s we loved going to the Adventure playground near the summit. Also was a spectator standing around 30 metres from where a Mini being driven in Targa lost control into the crowd and fire tanker, wasn’t a good day, luckily no fatalities. Was last there in Nov 2023 at the Tennis Centre for a friends Birthday, cheers Angus
As someone who drives past the Athletic grounds every day, i always thoight the concrete 6 block was a leftover from a development at the athletics ground, never thought it was from the old pool. There is lots of hidden stuff on the domain if you look!
Hi Angus ,the original Botanical Gardens station building is now at the Tasmanian Transport Museum in Glenorchy together with the station from Newtown.
Fantastic summary about the domain, so much history up there. Interesting about the original water supply for the botanical gardens, given Hobart is the 2nd direst city in Australia it did well to supply enough water for the gardens.
This is first time I watched one of your videos on my big screen tv. I just happened to pick one of your best episodes yet. Loved it. Mainly because when I was in Hobart , I took a great internet interest in the Domain area. You answered lots of lingering questions I never got around to finding out myself. Cheers.
Cheers and thanks for the summary of the Domain. Our amateur radio club - the Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania currently utilizes the weatherboard building a the top for our clubrooms and activities.
I used to roller-skate on the old tanks as a kid and I saw my first concert at the Domain as an adult (AC/DC) in 2001. My mums friend Bobby Kelty owned a house on the Glebe and he raced Dalmatians on the Domain. I lost a tooth chewing Minties while watching one of those races. I know little more of the history.
Thanks Angus for your videos. I always look forward to them learn a little more about Hobart it’s one of our family’s favourite holiday destinations each year We have referred to some of your videos to explore for something different to the usual tourist destinations.
Thanks again Angus the history of this beautiful city I now call home and your videos are of great interest & I often feel encouraged to to explore myself some of the many places you have introduced me to. Cheers Mate
Really lovely video mate. You’re absolute blessing to the platform my friend, this has always been the content I’ve longed for. I love the thoughtful yet sombre tone, and it has made me realise over your last 50 videos, how much around us has been forgotten. Keep up the good work mate, it’s always a good Sunday when you upload.
Angus, congratulations on your 50th video on the history and mysteries of Hobart. I have learnt so many interesting stories of Hobart since my arrival in July 2021. Keep up the great work . Btw do you do speaking engagements for history nerds? If not you should (maybe an old Hobart drinking establishment would be a good venue )
That was a great documentary mate. A credit to you and your researching skills. Loved that image of the proposed railway into the city. Imaging looking down Collins Street and seeing that grand art Deco train station entrance! Cheers mate
As usual another great informative video, Tasmania has a great history hidden away ( that you are uncovering ) let's hope our future also adds to the stories
Wow. Memories of parts of Hobart that I still can recall, and some, like magazine I knew nothing about! Your camera work is excellent, as is your comintary. I Have always wanted to return there, but as my use by dateis ever nearer I suspect this is just a well meant-to-be dream. Northern Colorado is a long way from there! A job well done, and thank you so very much. Is there, or have you ever visited Port Arthur with your camera? I spent few years there; imagine my shock and horror, as City boy in Melbourne to...There! I had never seen a cow before, and did not know what these bovines were and I asked about TV, I was looked at...quite suspiciously and asked,"What is TV?" True story!
Thank you for this excellent 'walk and talk' on the Domain. It has been a definite jog to my multiple memories of living in Hobart at a number of times in my life and as a child in the lives of my parents and family. It was very sad when the wonderful passenger rail system was demolished. My father at one time worked in Tasrail (as it is called now) as a clerical staff member and I can recall as a child moving to Hobart with my family when my father was temporarily transferred. I always have felt deeply saddened by the knowledge of how the last Thylacine died at the Beaumaris Zoo. Hopefully there may still be a Thylacine somewhere in the wilds. However they would have a tough time in today's Tasmania. So many good and sad memories. Thank you again. The land looks very dry at the moment which sadly is true in the north as well. May I ask if you are related to the Sydney Thornett family who included some renowned footballers (rugby I think). My family were very close friends with members of that Thornett family who spent some time in northern Tasmania and who later lived in Fairlight near Manly in Sydney?
Why the Government didn't choose the TCA ground to redevelop into the CBD stadium I'll never know. Multiple entry exit points, any number of extra roads and carparks could be built. Access to the Northern train line is close by (because one day surely we'll get trains again!?)
They might still do it. Apparently the cricket is trying to pull out of Blundstone and want a dedicated ground of their own. Either would make a better location for a stadium than Mac Point!
Hey Angus, I have really enjoyed your vids - just came across them! You have a lovely voice and a great way of telling a story. It amazes me that Hobart has had many dreams that have failed. Its like the feng shui of the place is all wrong. I couldn't put my finger on it but you explained it perfectly in the Black Snake video. Give me a yell if you are ever down in Dover- cheers!
Thankyou for acknowledging the homeless that use the domain. This land is for the use of our people. It bothers me that these people are often moved on.
Hi Angus- I takes my dogs up the domain almost daily- thanks for pointing out some things I have walked by and never realised the significance of, particularly the Number 6 block! Do you have any idea what the small concrete slabs below the radio tower on the easter side of the domain are remnants of? There are two to the north of the middle carpark (just above the water reservoirs with BBQ facilities) another to the south west of said carpark. The northern ones have evidence of plumbing. I do wonder if they are part of WW2 defence systems?
Another Awesome video Angus!, and all the old photographs and maps your able to acquire is Priceless. Did The Western train line of the Derwent that go out to Maydena way? And did you get out to Hardline @ Maydena this w/e just gone. That was epic to watch and i thought Derby was tassies premier mtb bike track but it may be Maydena. Stay safe brother and ill see you in your next post. Legend M8👌🏽🤙🏽
Thank you Angus, you documentaries are so informative delivered in such a generous manner. Sort of bitter sweet, with so many of those early buildings dismantled. What do you think of the new stadium proposal. ? I am dead against it as i have think such a structure will have a negative impact on the surrounding area.
Thank you, Gavin. This support is huge help. I’m currently finalising the edit on a new video. It’s about the lost Highland Road to Hobart. It should be up on the channel at 5pm Sunday.
Thanks for your hard work, it very much appreciated. Hobart history presented in a modern way. My kids have watched them. I hope you end up with your own tv show!
Are you sure there was any Aboriginal Tribes in Hobart area, or brought there? The tribal population was always small in Tasmania. Like 800-3000. More exaggerated figures 5K to 10K.
