Fortunately, I think we won't get a season 2. The manga overall is absurdly better, more consistent progression, less dramatic tone, etc, but the ending is so horrendously bad that the author got hated by most of her western readers just because of the last *2* chapters. She tries to hide behind her japanese fanboys, but deep down I think she regret using two thirds of her work to develop the most popular girl instead of the one she wanted to end with the MC.

Now, i might misremember this part but rui was gonna marry natsuo but he changed his mind. Then natsuo ends up marrying hina because rui's daughter (this is years later) puts a ring on hina's finger because they were in the middle of cleaning her which ends up waking her up. He marry's hina and the end. Honestly, i actually like the ending cause of how crazy it was. The manga was genuinely decent (anime fucked it up) and something different from the other shit incest or romance that goes nowhere kinda manga. But after a while it was getting tiring and dragging on so a shit ending that makes you go wtf is better than just a normal ending imo.
It's not really "hiding behind her Japanese fanboys"-- we are truly an incidental audience that doesn't especially matter in the grand scheme of Japanese media. Forget the fact that the Western (American, really-- and I do include myself) audience is usually ass to begin with-- how many of us are even *buying* the tankoubons, or the anime Blu-Rays? We just aren't a substantial market-- South Korea is a more substantial market. Singapore is a more substantial market. _France_ is a more substantial market. Freaking *_Brazil_* is more substantial. And how many Taqueria Gokus do you have in America? Because there's one in Mexico... _that's one more Taqueria Goku than there are in America_ (this is kind of a joke, but there's definitely a strong anime/manga scene in Latin America overall). And that's in terms of attention and market. This manga could have had a cheeks-tier ending, but if I was in her shoes, I wouldn't even be obliged to care about the American reaction unless I wasn't uber-empathetic.
Domestic Girlfriend is awesome. Sure it has a but too much filler in the manga, but what can you do... I just wish the last 2 chapters of the manga didn't exist. It's a great bonding exercise for both Team Hina and Team Rui to get together and hate the same thing.

You know, I really didn't expect the age gap subgenre of anime to be good, but god damn, Domestic Girlfriend, Koikimo, Higehiro, Scum's wish, After the rain are all easy 8+ shows. Of all things romance could be about, why is it age gap that happens to be done much better than the rest?

I understand that Domestic Girlfriend may not appeal to everyone initially, given its seemingly outlandish premises. However, upon delving into the story and getting to know the intricately developed characters, one begins to realize that it's a masterpiece in disguise. Also, just consider how invested some readers got into the characters, that when the ending of Domestic Girlfriend came about in the manga, they were outraged and quick to blame the author for what they deemed a nonsensical conclusion because their favorite character didn't end up with the main character. This reaction often stems from viewing the series solely as a typical romantic comedy, without recognizing the significance of the underlying context and disregarding the hints left by the author since the very beginning. A truly marvelous masterpiece, but not for everyone.
You could make the premise work with them being blood relatives. Assuming a school year that starts on September 1st, if she was born in September and he was born in August of the following year they'd be in the same grade despite her being almost a year older. Have the parents divorce while they're really young so they don't remember each other, with the mother moving to a different part of the country. The mother takes the daughters while the father takes the son. About 17 years later they meet again when the younger daughter transfers to his school at the end of the year and the older daughter becomes a teacher there, but they don't advertise their relationship. In the summer the class holds a party and they hook up. They become friends with benefits for a few months before the parents bring everyone together to introduce the siblings to each other and announce that they're getting remarried, but by then they hooked up so many times that it's become a habit, and even knowing the truth can't break it.
