In 2009, I came home from a deployment and my oldest son, who was 3 or 4 at the time, wouldn’t eat for almost 2 weeks... Being a father I was obviously concerned, so I asked him about it and his answer really hit me hard… He said, “Dad, if I eat I’ll grow up and if I grow up I’ll become a daddy. And if I become a daddy, I’ll have to leave my family.” My boys barely knew who I was and I couldn’t let them grow up without a father... I realized at that moment my family needed me a lot more than the Navy needed another SEAL. So I put in for retirement the next day… Back then I knew I wanted to be with my family more than anything, so I made changes in my life that allowed me to be at home. I’m the same. I aim with left eye on handguns and right eye on rifles. My accuracy suffers because all the instructional vids are for same eye dominance. I have to do stuff they tell us not to do.
@PWPhoto @Koala Tux @Cream I did the same for a few years, but with practice I have started shooting my AR left handed and my 9 or 40 I still shoot right handed. It takes practice and more practice just be patient with it.
@@user-bq3ch1ps8q The video mentions that the eye with weaker vision is usually the dominant eye. I wear eyeglasses and the prescription for the left eye is signifivan stronger than the right eye. I suspect those people with stronger prescriptions on one eye will be dominant on that particular eye.
Completed USMC Sniper School in 1982, USMC Sniper Instructor School in 1983, a police academy in 1990, a California POST certified Firearms Instructor course in 2002. The whole point of this? Chris’ brief RU-vid video finally helps me understand eye dominance in a manner I could share with others. Over 35+ years, eye dominance has been the unicorn I could never understand or capture and explain. Well done Chris! (And thank you!)
I only have experience with airsoft thanks to my countries irrational fear of competitive shooting and hobby shooting but I learned something interesting none the less: I never tested for eye dominance, I got my safety brief, put on my gear and started playing. When I started learning tactics and handling to up my game, I found out that my pistol is always aligned under my right eye but my rifle is aligned under whichever eye and shoulder I need for the piece of cover I'm at and I just thought that was the best way to do it. Apparently shooting ambidextrous and switching eyes (with both eyes open) any time you need to, doesn't come naturally to many shooters, be it airsoft, competition, hobby and I've yet to talk to many soldiers about it.
Read many comments but not all so I'll just share my experience. At 12 years old in 22cal rifle Marksmanship class, the instructor gave us a small 2" x 2" piece of chipboard and a pin. We poked a hole in the middle, held it out the piece in front of us with both hands extended forward. Instructed to look at a window and then to pull the chipboard towards our eyes. Viola! Naturally, mine was drawn to my left - many tries afterwards as well as I'm right handed. I wore an eye patch in the beginning but got the hang of it... or did I? During a competition, I shot my older brother's target. Oops. He was flabbergasted, unaware, and disqualified. It was 10+ years till I told him it was me. 😁
I get different results when I do each of those tests. The Miles test I get right eye dominant and the Porta test, I'm left eye dominant. I'm looking at the same object and same distance.
Awesome! Making a triangle with hands to look through really helped! Most say to point at something but when i do that either my finger or background gets doubled looking....didnt have that issue with your looking through a small hole trick! Thanks!
Thanks for teaching me which eye is dominant the pointing at a object then uncovering and covering my dominant eye my finger tip was off to the right of the spot on the wall by exactly 1” great test thanks again
At first, the idea of shooting with both eyes open sounded crazy to me, however I decided to give it a try, and Man it really makes a difference! Thank you Chris!
You are the best Chris! If I wasn't sick I promise you I'd be able to to do much more - all the way around- training and shooting and getting all you have to offer. I KNOW YOU ARE THE BEST! Buz
Until about 10 years ago I thought I was right eye dominant. I'm a Correctional Officer and we were shown how to pick or dominant eye. I'm right handed but left eye dominant. For a few years I continue to shoot right handed with our shotgun. Then with practice I have started shooting my AR, shotgun and other long guns left handed. My scores have gotten better with practice shooting the shotgun. I still shoot right handed with the handgun. It takes practice and more practice just be patient with it.
Thank you, I kept wondering why my dominant eye kept switching. My right eye always takes over when I shoot a bow but because I thought my left eye was dominant I learned shooting pistols that way. I wish to make a change and will train using my right eye from now on.
I’m one of the oddballs. I’m right handed, but I’m left eye dominant. It never fails that whenever I go thru a class, the instructors always watch me and ask why I’m aiming with my left but I’m right handed. They don’t believe someone can be cross eye dominate. I always prove them wrong. It does, however, cause me accuracy issues sometimes. I have to cross my body to aim my firearms and it does put my hands in a slightly off position. Are there any ways to correct this? Maybe you could do a video explaining this for others out there like me who are also struggling from being cross eye dominate when all the instructions are for same eye dominance. I know I would be very great full for one.
Funny how you mentioned shooting with both eyes open. That's where I started when I discovered you. This was an excellent video about finding your dominant eye. Thanks Chris!
I'm left eye dominant. Have known it since I was a kid shooting small bore indoor 4 position matches. I shoot everything including shotgun right handed. No problems. My daughter was in 4H shotgun. She is left eye dominant also. Instructor tried to make her switch to left handed shooting. I prevailed and she does really well right handed. You can overcome it.
Thanks for the video it let me know that I am mostly cross eyed dominate. Would it be possible to do a video about what corrections are best to help with that?
I feel like I failed somehow. When I look at a spot on the wall and point at it with one finger I see two fingers. Then when I look at my one finger the spot on the wall turns into two.
Another way to find it is the way you slouch at the computer while watching something. For example I tend to slouch so that my left eye is the eye watching the entire screen and right eye cant see everything. Even though I am right handed and sleep on my right side, my subconscious is making me use left eye to take more in.
This might be a late comment but my dad told me to shoot with both eyes open (he got the red dot, which is awesome) and it’s really nice to shoot w both of them open. Sucks bc I’m left eye dominant but right handed. Idk if it’s bc I was shooting left but I kept getting hit with the shells and one of them burned the crap out of my neck & some small burns on my right arm. Not fun. Also, my uncles son is a navy seal too. He lives in Coronado Island, one of the most beautiful places ever. Respect to you!
I'm not really sure which eye is my dominate eye... I can use either when i shoot but i've trained myself to use my right eye the most. When i try these tests i've noticed that it all depends on which hand that you are using. If you point at something with your right hand, then you finger is going to be pointing right on the item when using your right eye.. And vise versa when using the left hand.
that's just not true, what if your nose has a slight bend torwards one side, or if light is reflecting differently on each side of your nose, if you're looking slightly left or right, just isn't helpful in most cases
I have been shooting my 9mm for a little over 2 years. I don't have a problem shakng with either hand but shooting 2 handed they shake real bad what am I doing wrong?
I found out my left eye is dominant. Right handed, now. That's good because it has better vision. Thanks. Can your eye be related to what hand is dominant?
I am near sighted and wear glasses. Should I do the "triangle test" with my glasses on? The video also mentions that the dominant eye is usually (but not always) the eye with weaker vision. My left eye has a much stronger eyeglass prescription than my right eye, so even without performing the triangle test, I am almost certain I am left eye dominant.
In the next sentence or two he explained what he meant by that. It wasn’t a mistake. Basically the dominant eye is dominant because it has weaker vision and tries to compensate for that be being dominant.
Having long ago established my dominant eye and shooting with both eyes out of habit, I'm a bit confused as to what I can further learn to further refine my shooting skill set (as eye dominance applies). Forgive my syntax.
Neither of these tests work for me as described. Whether it's the shape made by my hands, my finger or any distant object, the same thing happens: If I focus on the distant object the near object (i.e., my hands or finger) appears double -- One for each eye. If I focus on the near object, the distant object appears double -- One for each eye. I can choose the hand, finger or object as seen by either eye and the results are the same (but opposite). No one eye "comes out on top", so to speak. Does this mean I have no dominant eye? Of course, fatigue and changes in my eyes also comes into play. Depending on the time of day and even the time elapsed since my last eye exam (and subsequently, latest eye glasses) one eye or the other may be clearer. In the past I've always thought my left was dominant but that was because it was generally stronger (which apparently was false). At this point I can't say I can shoot better with one eye or the other, but hopefully I'll be able to determine that. With a rifle, since I'm right-handed my right eye is more convenient but not always better.
I tried going to that first link of yours but it said it is very unsafe. why is that? was afraid to click on. I don't have a gun but would like to learn to do it well & get one.
Sorry about that. I'm completely switching my website platform to make my training area better easier to use. The servers are still switching over so that message should be gone within a few days.
It sounds like eye dominance is an issue if I'm shooting with both eyes open. If I sight the target with just my non-dominant eye (other eye closed), is that any less accurate than if I sight the target with only my dominant eye open?
Hmm, these tests doesn't really work on me. When I focus on something with my finger pointed at it, I see two ghostly fingers which I figure is a mix of what both my eyes can see. If I move my finger so one of the other finger lines up with what I'm focusing on then it matches up with one eye if I close the other. Neither eye seem to have a preference.
Did the tests over and over... It’s more like where I incline my head, I focus with the other side... If it right in the middle I tend to focus more with my left eye which is the worse one btw...
I am right handed with left eye dominant . What should i do for a perfect 10 meter air pistol shooter? I change my hand right to the left or change my eye left to the right ? Please suggest me ? Thank you
Hi Chris, i'm a bowshooter on target. And always closed my left eye. But almost all the great archers shoot with both eyes open. So i wanna do that also. I shoot with a peepsight in the string, and a scope with a lens. Must i do the thing with the triangle ?
If I am left-eye dominant am I still good if I hold a pistol in my right hand and close my right eye or leave both eyes open? If I close my left eye as I have done for 52 years I am off to the left. The farther away the target is the farther I am off. It's not nice at all.
Im not sure. If I focus the triangle slightly left then close my right eye my left eye stays center. But if I focus slightly right and close my left eye my right eye keeps it center. Does that mean im non dominent? If I aim the triangle exactly center the item disappears completely. Almost like I have a blind spot if I'm focused dead center between both eyes. So I can almost force either eye to be dominant depending which side of the blind spot im on
if i close my right eye, my finger points on the right side of the item and when i close my left eye, it points to the left side :( Will i be able to shoot with both eyes open or is it the best to just close one eye? Im mostly using a scope on my airsoft sniper. Also, i cant "cover" an item with my finger or point directly at an object.
My eyes are f-ed up.. Left eye is seeing slightly Brighter and right eye is better sharper and more "natural" color. My picture is showing more of a right eye, and i think its my dominant eye beacuse i've always seen colors which are coming from my right eye. Not left one
Hi i dont know whats dominant with me when i did both test the triangle static shows that im right eye dominant but when i did the finger static test it shows that my left eye is dominant. Does it tell that i dont have a dominant eye?
I had same problem. When you have both eyes open I think it depends where or what eye your focusing with at that Time. So I think this method is unreliable Try looking and seeing where your nose is. My nose is at the bottom right of my vision. So I see mostly with my left eye. So I think I am left eye dominant.
I don't believe you. You pointed with your right hand close to the right side of your face. Try pointing with your left arm, now your finger should be near the left side of your face. There are no dominants, just stronger vision in one eye maybe, not enough to make a difference.
