Thank you for your videos! I've been trying to learn chicken genetics for a while and you make things so easy to understand. My journey with chicken genetics accidentally began when I unknowingly bred a dominant white hen and a recessive white rooster and got a blue hen. I was like, what the heck is that lol.
I'm too dumb for this.. but it's very interesting. My roosters are barnyard mixes. One is black, one was all white the 1st 1yr but now has yellow in his feathers and my 3rd is multi colored white,brown,black, yellow gold. I was watching a bunch of your videos hoping to figure out which rooster fathered which chick. But I don't think that's possible.
Re: the Silkie rooster carrying, but not expressing, the Blue gene. So, that Silkie was actually Blue in color, but the Blue was masked by recessive White? It must have been, because as I understand it, with Blue being co-Dominant, a bird must actually be Blue, or Splash, in order to carry the Blue gene. If it doesn't show Blue then it doesn't carry Blue. Correct?
That’s a good question! Firstly, blue is actually incomplete dominant, not co-dominant. 🙂 The blue gene is a Eumelanin diluter, meaning it affects black pigment. Recessive white also affects eumelanin. This is an example of an epistatic interaction - the white hides the blue. This works because blue and recessive white are on different loci. 🙂 Most of your time, your assumption that if blue doesn’t show, it isn’t there is correct. However, in the case of epistatic interactions, blue can be masked. Blue can be masked by homozygous dominant white as well. It can also be masked in rare cases of heterozygous dominant whites without pigment holes. From what I could tell, that male I had was heterozygous for dominant white, heterozygous for blue and homozygous for recessive white. 🙂 This is all based off of his offspring though because I couldn’t *see* any of this on him except the white. 😄
If I breed a white feathered foot Cochran roo (he has 1 black feather on his back), the hen looks like a Columbian Wyandotte, but with feathered feet, what color would the chicks be?
Good question! But not quite. 😉 The white you see in light brahmas is caused by the silver gene. Light brahmas have Co (Columbian) which restricts black eumelanin to the neck and tail area, leaving pheomelanin behind. The white is silver pheomelanin. For some reason, Brahmas use the name light for this variety, but other breeds, like Wyandottes, call this Columbian. Hope this makes sense! 😄

I’ve rescued some battery hens and they’re my first time keeping hens. One was taken by a fox which I was saddened by and then on Friday my favourite hen was ill so I called the vet but they asked to call me back but unfortunately in the time I waited for their return call she died. I’m now angry with myself. I read ALL sorts of different possible causes and thought she could have been egg bound so made a bath to soak her back end, she was a little livelier but eventually she died.

Hey I see you have been looking into this :) Hope you do well on your move to Texas & will be looking forward to seeing you get set up so you can sort out getting that 1.5 lb weight boost with dominant white (II) with out any recessive white in there. That would be awesome.
