Genetics of Cuckoo & Barring in Chickens | Genetics, Breeding & More 

I definitely will at some point! I have done a video on the genetics of the silkie comb (rose comb & pea comb) that may help. 🙂 Thankfully, rose comb/single comb genetics aren’t too complex. The rose comb is completely dominant over the single comb. Some of the finer details aren’t super clear (leader genetics, texture, etc) though. 🙂

Hmm..can’t say for sure because I’m not sure of the exact genetic makeup of the Isa Browns. They aren’t a recognized breed. 🙂 To sum it up, no APA/ABA recognized color will come. It’s going to be a ‘mutt’ color. Lavender is recessive, so it won’t have any lavender. It’s probably going to be a very messy looking isa brown color, or perhaps another color with loads of leakage. Hoping this answers your question, it’s hard to predict. The offspring may just come out black with loads of leakage.

@@chickinnfarmer Interesting! I did a bit of digging and learned that Isa Browns do have dominant white, so that chick should be paint. I wouldn’t expect it to be a clean paint though. 🙂

Nope, a Blue rooster would work! 😄 That would just mean 50% of females are black and 50% of females are blue. 🙂 50% of males will be normal barred, and 50% will be blue barred. It *might* be a little harder to tell the blue chicks apart at hatch, but once they feather out in a week or so, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of who’s a boy and who’s a girl. 🙂

@@CedarShadeFarm ugh, I must have something else going on genetics wise then. I was getting blue males from that scenario. I could not figure out why. Course I also thought the rooster was Black originally. Something told me to grow them out and verify. 🤷‍♀️

Hi there! So it depends if the white is a dominant white or recessive white. If they’re recessive white and aren’t hiding anything underneath, then it should work out like the pairings explained in the video. If it’s dominant white, the male offspring will be cuckoo/barred paint, and the female offspring will be regular paint. But, sometimes white is carrying something underneath like partridge, blue, or anything honestly. So it’s hard to say.
