I highlight some of my favorite tips and tricks to employ during auction drafts in fantasy football this season! Twitter: @realsteeleffb #auction #auctiondraft #tips #tricks #nfl #draft #fantasyfootball #fantasyfootball #nfl
I think auction drafts are the most fair but also the least appreciated/utilized draft style. I like them but never been good at them. I’ll try again this year with these tips in mind.
My 15-year draft switched to auction 5 years ago. Never going back. Pumped I’ve found a good auction draft content creator. Appreciate the hard work on the slides too - subscribed!
Nice to see some videos on auction drafts. I’ve been doing them for over a decade now. Be hard to go back to snake. Love the content; a lot of good points I have found myself agreeing on. Keep the vids coming. You got yourself a new subscriber!
one thing i would encourage people to do in auction is to 1) have a positional budget and 2) know where you are on your budget throughout the entire draft. If my budget at the qb position is say $20 and i grabbed a qb1 for $6 and a qb2 for $2 i make a note that i'm $-12 or $12 under budget. that allows me to be able to reallocate that money to other positions. If you have no positional budget , and you don't know if you're over or under budget every moment of the draft, that's a great way to not optimize your draft.
I definitely like this - something I often do is build a bunch of "teams" based off of predraft values and then adjust as I go For example, ill make 1 build that has a top 3 QB, 2 low end RB1s, a WR1, and some WR3 level wrs everywhere else. Then ill adjust that build based off of how much I actually spent so I know where I can spend more elsewhere. Gotta have a lot of builds ready to do it this way though
@@realsteeleffb agreed Zach. i do the same thing. i'll create a google doc and have separate tabs for separate buids. LIke maybe one build is called Hero QB where you get like an Allen or..... or maybe a build called Double RB......or a build called The Kelce Build.......that way exactly like you're saying when you get into a draft you are prepared for so many possible situations and there are no 2 auctions alike. changing gears i wanted to mention something you already touched on yesterday and that's the first 5-10 minutes of the draft are very very important. it's important to determine if you're draft is tight or loose at the beginning meaning that sure it would seem like you couldn't get great players early because EVERYONE has money. However, some of the best deals of the auction can be had in the opening first 6 nominations. i got hill at nomination 8 last year for $49. zach, i was using your auction prices and we had him listed in the sixties. and i think he was one of the first wrs nominated. so that's a case where you read the room and realize people aren't spending yet
A strat I have it nominating a high end qb/te right away as it most likely sets the market for those positions very expensive and you can get insane value on rb and wr
I particularly was the guy that gave up everything for Carolina CMC and he only paid 7 games that season. I saved my money and didn’t spend for the next 3-4 rounds. Had a bunch of low end WR2s and 3s on my squad. Team was just McCaffrey and friends lol.
You know it - we'll get some mock drafts and stuff coming along with value comparisons and all that too. Any other content you want to see for auction drafts?
I've been doing auction drafts only for 20+ years, it is the only way to go. I've done both silent auctions and regular auctions, with many keepers and raises each year. I could never go back to a snake style league where you are basically locked into the players you get based on draft position.
ESPN actually isnt bad right now, ya can actually generally get a room with at least half real people already which is cool so thats where I tend to do mine
Woah super funky format! 100 bucks is insane for a massive roster like that. In dynasty my suggestion would basically be to punt rb (maybe snag some old guys for free late like mostert) and then to prioritize young WRs and get a good QB. Let me know how it goes this sounds super cool
Thoughts on overpaying for CMC this year? I see him going for an extra 5-10+ dollars above ADP nearly every time I enter an ESPN auction, and am contemplating whether or not having such a stud RB-1 is worth the price when others also value him so much
Idk that id overpay for him tbh - obviously he is the best asset in fantasy but just putting all of your eggs in one basket like that makes you far too exposed to a bad season if he gets hurt. At cost i think it is okay but I dont find myself overpaying to get him
How would you allocate your positional budget? Also in a league with keepers (a lot of top WR’s unavailable). Would you keep Evans for $18 and AJ Brown for $32? That leaves my budget at $150 to the rest of my team, with WR’s all set.
Very fun league format, love having a keeper or two I try to not be too intentional about deciding on a positional budget before a draft because I dont want to force myself in to any specific builds. That being said, I tend to allocate very little to QB and TE, just trying to get value there, and then ill generally hover around 50/50 between WR and RB (with a slight lean towards wr normally)
Some people have Garret Wilson for $10 or Chase for $17 because they got them their rookie years etc. it’s really tough to compete with those teams. I’ve had hurts the last 3 seasons but now that his value is $25 it’s time for me to move on.
@natebonenfant one thing our league does with keepers is limit them to 3 years and doba 10% salary bump each season. We are contemplating doing a franchise tag option on players after year 3 in which you pay the average of the top 5 salaries from the previous year for that position if you want to keep him for another year.
