Dominic Miller is a real master on the guitar, without letting us know it. He remains humble and seems to say : « oh, I am just playing two or three notes here and there! » But, Pat Metheny had a hard time trying to built an improvisation on « Shape of My Heart », and with the years of work, Dominic Miller builts up a solo which sounds, to my ears, as what an improviser can get out of this tune, even if, at first sight, the way this song goes doesn’t seem to open much space to improvise. Well, Dominic Miller, in a way, says : « look, that is what can be done on this song! » All with a sense of ease, which I think is not properly the case when it comes to « add » something to it. Dominic Miller is one of the musician I have the most satisfaction to listen to nowadays.
Disappointing his band were restricted to instrumental work only with no vocals where there were so many great Sting songs to choose from. - Fragile, They Dance Alone, Set Them Free, Russians, etc etc. Beautiful songs!
I think that's because you don't understand Dominic. He has always particular about instrumental music in his music from the beginning. He's someone who uses his guitar to express the vocal part of the song. He didn't come here to play Sting's music. He came to play his own music. “A Day in the Life” is a Beatles song and “Shape of My Heart” is a Sting’s song. In both cases Dominic would have had a proper expression of the vocal part in the song.
This is Dominic music ,mister!, try to feel the difference ! You should go to Sting shows instead ! misunderstanding of the condition when Dom plays by himself !
