Miss the late Dominick Dunne. I watched a doco. on Mr Dunne's life . Especially when he spoke of about the murder of his Daughter , Dominque . I remember this trial and OJ's and I'm from SYD Australia. Of coarse they were guilty..

Jose Menendez was a jerk, but he didn't deserve to be harmed. Erik and Lyle should have just cut ties with their parents and gotten their revenge by becoming successful on their own. I bet that part of the reason they got convicted in the second trial was because of backlash from the Simpson trial. I believe that Jose Menendez was physically and emotionally abusive to Erik and Lyle, but I doubt there was any sexual abuse. This was a really good episode by the way.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on the fact that Jose wanted to know everything Erik said to Dr. Oziel. It's like he was afraid his son would reveal the family secrets. In October 1989, Erik gave an interview with journalist Robert Rand, in which he reminisced about his parents. He stated that he, his father and Lyle did everything together, that they showered together! He said that like it was normal! I think there was more going on in that family than we will ever know.
Who is saying that he wanted to know everything? Second hand sayings, I always say cannot be trusted. As far as these kids were concerned I find it incredible anyone could give an ounce of credibility to anything they say. The night they killed their parents they put on a a hell of a show for the police. What's more is that they also shot their other whom they said did nothing to them. They were complicit in what they did in my opinion and rather than go out and earn an honest living they killed for it instead and I have a hard time seeing them as anything but cold blooded murderers.

The boys' teachers and coaches referred to Jose and Kitty Menendez as "the parents from hell". I have done research on this case and there is more to it than meets the eye. Even in their taped confession to Dr. Oziel, the brothers stated that money was not an important factor in the murders. The prosecution had no evidence that the brothers killed their parents for money and could not afford to pay their own expert witnesses.
That is normal if they are under-age especially if they are in need of more help. But they made it sound as if Jose, was forcing him to confess all that was told. Seems like you can tell it one way or another.
I never believed for one second that these two boys were sexually abused: they just came up with that lie because they knew that they had to come up with something very serious to justify murder. The truth is that these were two spoiled evil scumbags, who robbed their neighbors houses, cheated at school, and were going to be dis-inherited. The motive was money: they killed the mom because if she lived, they wouldn't get their inheritence right away.
Jose was a self made millionaire who expected his sons to use the opportunities he provided them to excel in life. Instead, they chose to drop out of college and rob their neighbors houses. Jose probably was tough on the kids, but did he rape them? I don't think so. And life in prison is too good for them: they should be hung for murder.

Dominick Dunne is usually not one to feel sympathy for these high society murderer cases, but for this particular case, he actually did believe that the brothers didn't just kill for money, that they killed because of the anger and resentment they felt towards their parents, and that Jose and Kitty were no parents-of-the-year contender and said many hurtful things to Erik and Lyle that affected them deeply. They killed their father because they truly hated him, and they killed their mother because she always took his side and they resented her. She would have also been a witness to the murder of their father, and there's no way they could get away with it if she were left alive. They also felt she was pathetic and too wrapped up in their father to be able to live without him. Their parents exerted a great deal of control over them and put a lot of pressure on them, and they wanted to be free of that. That was the real motive, inheriting the fortune was just a bonus. He also said that the brothers are very manipulative, and I agree with him on that too. They did things like burglaries in a calculated move to spite their father, just like they took the witness stand in front of a national audience and lied through their teeth about him sexually abusing them, which I feel gave them a malicious satisfaction that they were getting the ultimate revenge on the father they hated by not only killing him, but then completely dragging his character through manure in front of the world with horrible filthy lies, all second-hand details that they'd gotten from a book they'd read in jail, all bs that their greedy, fame-seeking lawyers told them to say. So are they completely innocent victims? No. But are they a product of the upbringing of a tyrannical father who taught them to lie, cheat, manipulate, and that money can buy your way out trouble? Yes. There was also some trigger, some catalyst that caused the murder to occur when it did, not that stupid bs toupee story they made up, but a real, true catalyst, a fight they had with their parents earlier the week of the murder that set the plan in motion, and Dunne had a theory about that too. He also believed that if the defense lawyers had told the brothers to say the truth and reveal the real catalyst for why they chose to murder their parents when they did, instead of coming up with the bogus sexual abuse story, then there's a real strong chance they would have been acquitted or convicted of voluntary manslaughter instead of murder.

Too many times a parent expects their children to be as they want them to be. Its a mistake. Have children but upon their 18th birthday give them a choice: Leave home with a $2000.00 gift, or offer them to stay home and attend (and pass) school. Yes some could, but we are not all the same. Some people don't know how to leave. Sounds crazy, but they don't. My opinion on why they didn't leave: Lyle and Erik had no self-worth. Their inept and emotional retarded parents, Kitty and José, treated them like two copies of José, and not as two different individuals. Any kind of independent tought they had, or independent desire they may feel, was not good enough for José and he obliterated it. José cared about the "Menendez" name/gens, nothing else. And there were only one type of Menendez - that was José. That's why José from day one used terror tactics like physical and emotional intimidation and violence to mold his boys. That's just sick and evil. Only a psychopath behaves like that. In the first trial an Uncle came to testify about an incident that happened over a holiday in his home. Erik didn't tell Dr. Oziel about the abuse because he had signed a waiver giving Oziel the right to share info from their sessions with his parents. So it's unlikely that he would have told his therapist. Later, Erik claimed that he didn't trust Oziel. So who knows.
This case always fascinated me and briefly spiked my interest in going to law school. The story of Jose Menendez was inspiring in that he was driven and succeeded against the odds. Sadly, the brothers were not the end result of what Jose was hoping for. Always felt most sorry for Kitty since Jose was probably not a model husband and she was struggling in her marriage. It is tragic that the brothers threw everything away and ruined so many lives. I like seeing the family photos in this documentary. I wonder what the rest of the family is doing today. Jose's mother Maria passed away in 2009. David Conn, the prosecutor from the second trial, passed away a few years ago as well. If a follow up book were written about this case today, all these years later, it would still generate attention. At the second trial, in court, David Conn played a family video shot in the summer of 1989 of Erik, Kitty, Jose and Brian Andersen flying on a plane to a tennis tournament for Erik. It was a very humanizing thing for the jury to see the parents in another light.

Don't blame him. His daughter was murdered By her boyfriend and got off with virtually no jail time, so ever since then he devoted his life to putting killers behind bars.
His daughter's murder was indeed a terrible tragedy and her ex-boyfriend served two and a half years for killing her, and that was achieved because her name was dragged through the mud. I can certainly understand his position as a victim advocate but I think his own experience clouded his judgement in some cases, and this was one of those cases. The Menendez brothers were wrong to kill their parents, and they have acknowledged this themselves. However, Dunne went out of his way to dismiss the abuse claims and to overlook Jose's abusive and controlling streak which was verified by other people. It was not even close to the same situation that ended in his daughter's terrible and tragic death. His daughter had been abused by her former boyfriend and many people knew but no one intervened. It was similar with Lyle and Erik because family, friends, neighbors and teachers all sensed that something was wrong but no one did anything. That was really where the similarity ended.
With all the other testing we have in this country, psychological testing at the least should be given to any couple before procreation. Erik was in Israel in early 1990 with access to millions of dollars and a possible double murder charge if he flew back to the US - why didn't he move to a country that didn't have any extradition agreement with the US? Look further into the case and you will discover that Jose Menendez was a classic narcissist who mistreated people, both in his personal life and in business. He has also been accused of molesting members of the boy band, Menudo, whom he signed to a record deal when he was an executive at RCA in the mid-1980s. Jose was a Hollywood executive and pedophilia is rampant in the entertainment industry. Murder was not the solution, the brothers themselves have stated this and have taken responsibility for their actions. The fact that they were born into wealth and privilege was not their fault or their doing.
Their pain and fear would be a lot more believable had the two of them didn't go wild spending and partying after the death of both their parents. Also both were old enough to get out if they were willing to get off easy street. Their father may well be a monster, but in their actions so were they.

Leaving is always an option, but it's not that simple in abuse situations, especially where abusive parents are concerned. The brothers did not grow up normally and they were not prepared for the real world; their father used his wealth and power to control them. It's almost never mentioned that parents owned guns themselves, which they kept loaded in the master bedroom closet. The brothers knew that no one would believe them if they told about their father, he was a powerful Hollywood executive and had the power to track them down as well. When you have been abused, dominated and controlled for much of your life, your view of the world is extremely narrow and you tend to become desperate. Of course, killing their parents was not right and the brothers have stated this themselves; they insist to this day that they loved their parents, despite the horrific treatment they received at their hands and the fact that they murdered them. It's not as black and white as many of these pro-prosecution documentaries make it seem.

She got married while the Menendez trial was under way and that's why a lot of people don't make the connection - her maiden name was Ferraro. She makes a point of NEVER talking about the McMartin case, but she is always willing to talk about the Menendez brothers. I don't think she is particularly trustworthy. She's so sure that Lyle and Erik Menendez were NEVER abused - um, she is not one to talk. nils1134 And I read an interesting thing, that in the months before the murder, the mother was scared of them and confided in the psychologist that she thought they were up to no good. She seemed to be very distrustful and wary of them. A lot of the things I've learned point to that they made most of it up...I still believe Jose was a very tough dad who had extremely high standards, and he was impossible to please, but everything else they told is a lie. I do believe they suffered emotional abuse to some extent, but also that it was highly exaggerated, and that their childhood and life was far better than what they claimed. The picture of them as two entitled brats who hated their dad but loved his money is coming into focus more and more. I believe they had a pretty normal life, with the added wealth and privilege that most people don't have. The only true thing was that their dad could be very mean to them at times, and said a lot of words that hurt them, probably called them things like "weak", "failures", "losers", "unworthy", etc. Their dad expected too much, he wanted them to be successful (career-wise) and ambitious, and pretty much just like him, but that's just not who they are, and they didn't have it in them. He should have just accepted that instead of being disappointed in them. Don't push them too hard, just let them be on their own terms, don't put pressure on them, these are two individuals with their own personalities and dreams, they don't just exist to carry on a legacy. If their father had understood that, I don't think they would have grown to despise him.

Look up the Menudo sexual abuse scandal. Jose signed the boy band to a record deal in the 1980s when he was working at RCA Records. In the 1990s, many former members of the group accused several of the men who were supposed to be the managers, administrators, etc of sexually abusing them. So many allegations, and Jose was just one of the men who has been named as one of the predators. According to some, he had "an obsession" with the boy band and was "involved" with one of the underage members. He could very well have sexually abused his sons as well.
Actually, in the book "Blood Brothers" about the case, a business associate of Jose's mentioned that the allegations began to surface not long before the murders, and when Jose heard about boys in the band being plied with drugs and alcohol and being molested, he joked about it. Joked about it! How sick is that?
