I don’t know anything about Dominick not being in Vietnam, but what I have heard is people (and I’m one of them) who say he wasn’t in the special forces. He was in combat in Vietnam with the 173rd airborne, which is a storied unit & that service alone should be enough, but he was not a “green beret.”

n the early '90s I started reading paperbacks of stories from Vietnam. A lot of them were written by guys who were in the same outfit and the same action but in different locations and you'd recognize this action from a previous book but from that author's point of view and what he was doing. It was as if a half dozen or so guys who knew each other decided to write books. A lot were about LRRP patrols. I'm almost sure some of them were guys from the 173rd Airborne and when I started getting these mafia videos in my suggestions I thought the name Dominick Montiglio was familiar from them. Not sure, it was a long time ago.
Late to your comment. But there was this guy who wrote a book about " stolen Valor ". He put Domenick's name in it because Domenick's records were sealed for his entrance into the witness protection program. The author of that book couldn't find his records and made the assumption that Domenick was lying

This ambush story is in line with movies and books of the conflict and eventually as I had more knowledge of the world and wars, I asked what the H were they doing. They fought like a chapter out of Guadalcanal diary, it was not an island, they had an unlimited supply of light weaponry and a population of millions to draw from. By time he was their imperialism was 30 years in the rear view for non-corrupt governments unlike Russia, they took over an imperial claim from France to continue to prop up a corrupt government after France failed, they assassinated the leader because he was too corrupt.
