Why Mtbatten stayed in India for one more year after 1947! India had to deal with more than 500 princely states. All these states plus Indian army and civil services were loyal to their Brits masters. In order to merge them peacefully and to keep away UN or other forces merger with India has to be legal and smooth. For that reason Mtbatten's presence was necessary. Everything went smoothly except Kashmir! Pakistan didn't want Mt Batten as governor and for that mistake it paid high price!

यहां पर यह बता देना आवश्यक होगा कि स्वतन्त्रता अधिनियम के लागू होने के बाद भारत को संप्रभुता की प्राप्ति भले ही डोमिनियन के तौर पर हुई थी, परंतु डोमिनियन होने का अर्थ यह नहीं था की स्वतन्त्रता अधिनियम के लागू होने के बाद भी ब्रिटिश शासक के पास भारत के मामले में दखल देने का कोई अधिकार था। ब्रिटिश शासक की मौजूदगी केवल नाममात्र की थी। इसके अतिरिक्त भारत के गवर्नर जनरल की भी मौजूदगी केवल नाममात्र की थी तथा गवर्नर जनरल के पास भी शासन के संबंध में निर्णय लेने का कोई अधिकार नहीं था। इस दौर में शासन के संबंध में निर्णय लेने का अधिकार केवल संविधान सभा और संविधान सभा के द्वारा चुनी हुई मंत्रिपरिषद के पास थी। इसके अतिरिक्त ब्रिटिश शासक गवर्नर जनरल की नियुक्ति भी भारत के मंत्रिपरिषद के परामर्श के बाद ही कर सकती थी जिसके लिए संविधान सभा की मंजूरी लेना आवश्यक थी।

The point is if Britain had made up its mind to give India independence by a certain date, then it need not have worried either about the legal nitty-gritties or about what would happen to India once they left. In fact, Gandhi had told Mountbatten as much, "Leave India to the Gods!" Instead, Britain, with the help of its Indian collaborators, attempted to play God by trying to broker a deal between the Congress and the Muslim League, thereby maintaining peace between the Hindu and Muslim communities. With the benefit of hindsight, we know how successful their plan was - millions dead and/or displaced and an enmity that keeps on increasing with each successive generation! If, on the other hand, Britain had left India right away, without worrying about when a new constitution would be ready, leaving Indians to sort out their issues themselves, then the outcome could not have been worse than what actually happened. Even if there was a civil war, which happened in any case (both in the form of genocide and Kashmir), it would have - in all probability - settled all issues once for all, instead of the lingering tensions between the two countries that we see now. India would have had a baptism by fire and the country would have evolved all the more stronger - and undivided too - as a result! The real reason why Britain delayed granting India independence, while pretending to (try to) resolve the Hindu-Muslim deadlock, was that they wanted to maintain a foothold on the Indian subcontinent. The cold war was just starting and south Asia was going to be an important theatre in the west's effort to contain the Soviet Union. In particular, they needed a base in the subcontinent, from where they could keep an eye on Soviet Union itself and also thwart Soviet expansion plans towards south Asia and the Indian ocean. Jinnah was ready to offer them just such a military base in Pakistan in exchange for British help in creating the country in the first place. Hence, Britain suddenly started acting as if it could not leave India without securing the future of the 'minority ' Muslim community in a soon to be independent Hindu majority India. So, as they say in Bangla, just as a vegetarian that likes fish hides it under lettuce (শাক দিয়ে মাছ ঢাকা), so did Britain try to mask its real intensions under the garb of legal technicalities! The seeds of disharmony between the two communities they had sown since the great revolt of 1857, when Hindus and Muslims fought the British together for the last time, came in handy at this juncture.
