I have always liked how those Galaxies are just wandering through the battle unfazed by all the other ships. Just dancing around blowing big holes in things.

I would pull flag officers back to Excelsior's and Ambassador's. As they are rarely on front line service. Sector fleets should probably be thought of more like a modern CVBG is. So something like: 1 Sovereign / Galaxy / Nebula / Ross Class 1 Intrepid / Nova 2 Akira 3 Sabre 6 Defiant Sabre and Defiant would work in 3 ship wolf packs of 1 S + 2 D's The older ships from the movie/lost era would still be good ships for second line functions, think coast guard cutter type duty. I do think the focus would somewhat shift away from fewer large ships, and more small to mid size ships that would allow them to be mutually supporting

I would simultaneously have the Intrepid class both as diplomatic ships as well as a companion main cruiser to act with the Akira. It has really good weapons and defense, and is able to hold their own as main cruisers. Basically I would have them be a 24th century equivilant to a Constitution class. Exploratory missions by day, combat orientated by night.

I would develop the Borg technology that Voyager studied and adapted that to the newer star ships. Exploration to regions the Romulans didn't let the federation go into as well, as there may be planets with unique technology, resources and artifacts with a destroyed Romulan fleet not being able to stop this exploration, or an agreement that the federation help aid the Romulans in return for exchange of technology. I would also form an alliance with the Romulans to keep them as a useful backup in case of further invasion attempts into the Quadrant.

While I agree, the Saber would make a good general Frigate, it has limited cargo capacity. It wasn’t designed as a cargo ship. The Steamrunner would be a much better choice because of its 3 large shuttle bays. Instead of fighters, the Steamrunners could be retrofitted to carry cargo. They’re also fast and heavily armed. And in the relief effort, every available Galaxy and Nebula need to be pressed into service. Each has huge cargo capacity and medical facilities. In addition to the Sable , I would add the unappreciated Norway as my second general purpose frigate.

The Federation has so many member worlds and most of them have shipyards. I understand restriction the types of ships being built but it's far too narrow for the amount of resources available. At the end of the War the shipyards are pumping out ships as fast as possible. While slowing the manufacture time post war it does make sense to keep those ship yards active building starships to replenish the fleet before moving on to civilian and scientific ships.

I would use Intrepid class as both cargo and diplomatic cruisers, and use them to replace all the movie era ships in those secondary roles. I would add 3 more ships to the combat lineup, adding supplemental Defiant and Prometheus class in small numbers to the fleet screen, while Norway class ships provide supplemental long range firepower and flank screening for the Akira wings. I would also have Galaxy and Nebula class ships refit to act as both command ships and carriers (they have the room, and it provides further screening forces). I would also phase out the Peregrine fighter and Danube runabout in favor of the Flyer class runabout, as it is smaller, faster, more durable, and more flexible then the other two. The screen squadrons would have 3 Sabre, 2 Defiant, and 1 Prometheus (flagship) each. The Norway destroyer wings would be fielded in groups of 6, and one would be deployed to each flank. The Nova is a good pick to replace all old science vessels, and would be fielded in (logistical) squadrons of 3, along with 2 Intrepid/Miranda/Excelsior (as the Intrepid cruisers are built) and 1 Ambassador (flagship), with a squadron per sector.

I would decommission most of the random spin off classes like the Freedom and New Orleans classes and reuse the components to upgrade existing ships like Miranda class and Excelsior. This would be stop gap until the shipyards were rebuilt. Utopia Planitia and all other shipyards were destroyed by the Breen during the attack on Earth. Then i would do a phase out of the older classes over a period of time. I would build more Defiant Class, Nova Class and Intrepid class ships for exploration and border patrol. Galaxy and Ambassador and Nebula classes I would upgrade by back porting Sovereign class tech into them beefing them up to be used similarly to how you had them. Akira class would be the ship i would mass produce along with Defiant, Nova and Intrepid class
@jonwoodhouse1444
@jonwoodhouse1444 Год назад
What would I do? First thing, I agree the Federation needs to focus on rebuilding logistics. It should commandeer civilian freighters if need be as a stop-gap measure, and in the long term, develop a simple class of light and heavy freighters. Minimal Phasers, decent shields, no torpedoes, just a big cargo box with a warp drive, and build a ton of these things (Like WW2 Liberty Ships). These will be used to rebuild planets, where the Federation essentially needs to launch something like a Soviet 5-Year plan. Use all available replicators and industry to build more replicators and industry, and use that to rebuild all essential infrastructure first, and then everything else. Also focus on restoring quality of life within the Federation, and the economy, so that the population remains confident in the Federation cause, and member worlds don't secede. As for rebuilding Starfleet; here are my thoughts... The age of peace is over, and the galaxy is now very different than the one the Federation was born into. The Federation can no longer afford to maintain only a semi-active defense force. Military spending will have to increase, and Starfleet will have to become a Navy first, and explorers second. I would likely work on converting excelsior's and constitutions to perform military logistics operations, anti-piracy, and other functions that don't expect regular symmetric combat. They can also be brought back into combat in the future if necessary. As far as most other older cruisers, I would work on phasing them out of the battle fleet, transferring them to other functions or mothballing them. No ships will be scrapped, unless they can no longer fly. It is better to have an antiquated weapon than to not have one at all. Exploration would resume, once the Federation's security has been restored. However, I do disagree about using smaller ships for exploration. I feel that Star Trek, time and again, has shown that something really big, powerful, and equipped with lots of crew and science equipment is very necessary out in deep space. Therefor, I would most likely continue to use big capital ships for this mission, especially the galaxy class, which was essentially designed for this role. Now, as for combat... I feel that maneuverability doesn't seem that important in Star Trek, given how accurate Phasers are. This means that (at least in my opinion) that fighters and small escorts are pointless. I would double down on producing as many big capital ships as possible, and making them as big as possible. I would suspend construction on the defiant and nova classes (and all similar classes), scale back the number of intrepids (which would be used primarily as interceptors), and throw all those resources into building more sovereign class. I would also put the utopia planitia engineers to work on designing capital ships that are even bigger than that. It often seems (atleast to me) in Star Trek, that it is better to have a few big heavy hitters, with the best captains and crews, than to have lots of light escorts. Quality over Quantity works best for Starfleet. I would also work on modernizing the galaxy class and ambassador class, and refitting them for war. I would also make an effort to further automate vessels, cutting down the number of crew lost if a ship is destroyed. I would also make plans to add a soong-type android to each vessel (or many to each vessel if we can figure out how to mass-produce them), as well as using holograms to replace less-important crews when possible, which could also help protect the ship from being boarded. Ferengi Pirates: "We've boarded the ship!" Captain: "Activate the emergency security holograms" 5,000 holographic Klingons: "Please state the nature of the security emergency!" As far as foreign policy is concerned, I agree that the Federation should use this opportunity to improve relations with the Romulans. The Klingon empire, by this point, is pretty much a Federation satellite state, so they are probably less of a priority; however, it would be a good idea for the Federation to provide them with economic aid, to further ensure their trust and loyalty. It should also be a priority to improve relations with the new Cardassian state as well, to make sure they don't fall back into the Dominion sphere of influence. The Federation should also use DS-9 as a major fleet base. It should also work on bringing all major sources of dilithium in the Alpha and Beta quadrants under its control. The Klingon Empire should also be given an eventual path to membership within the Federation. The Federation is now the defacto-leader of the Alpha and Beta quadrants, and should aggressively expand its presence to fit this role. It can use protection from either the Borg or the Dominion as a reason for other nations to side with it. Matching the Dominion as a military power should also be a top priority for the Federation in the coming decades, as well as preparing a defense against the Borg. In the long term, the Borg are the preeminent threat, to both the Federation and the Dominion, and if possible, the Federation should work to improve diplomatic ties with the Dominion, so that they can eventually form an alliance against the Borg.

That’s a really interesting idea. But the nova would be a poor explorer. And I think you’ve underestimated the excelsiors, they may be old but have survived multiple wars and the Lakota is an example of what investing in the class can do as it went head to head with a state of the art warship and held its ground. Overall I would split the entirety of starfleet into different fleets having a large tactical fleet for border patrol and could be brought together to defend the federation and another larger fleet for the more logistical and day to day needs. With a couple of small fleets dedicated to continuing the science and exploration fronts as that was at the heart of the federation.

Terms like "expensive" and "cheap" don't apply to this scenario, since the Federation doesn't have an economy (no money). More or less "resource-intensive" would be more applicable, though given the super-high-tech manufacturing and ship-building processes and capabilities they would have {i.e. the limitless energy of a "post-scarcity" society) by the late 2370s, and with the war won and reconstruction time available, even that would be unlikely to be a serious problem.

Love your video! I agree with most. I’m not sure about the Nova though. Deep space exploration without a constant supply chain didn’t end well for Equinox. I think it’s comparable to a diesel driven ship that is dependent on regular resupply and restocks where you should have a slightly larger ship with a nuclear reactor that can be on its own for a longer period of time. Not a Sovereign though. Maybe Intrepids, Voyager has proven it’s well suited for that. The Novas could be used for internal security against pirates and such or for border patrols. What do you think?
@logicplague
@logicplague Год назад
12:00 I'd switch the Nova for diplomacy and the Intrepid for exploration, since Intrepid was designed to be a long range tactical vessel. I could be wrong but I think it would be a bit better equipped for those type of missions, and it takes a relatively light crew. 12:55 Since the Saber's already have a job, I'd use the Defiant's here, since they were meant to work in conjunction with the Akira's and Sovereign's already, and they are heavier hitters. One thing about the Akira's, I don't believe fighters really have a place the way Star Trek typically shows ship combat. I know they were used, and they were mostly cannon fodder. Replace the fighter hangers with a long range phaser lance, combined with its torpedoes this would make the Akira devastating. Other than that, I like it. There's a lot to be said about standardization.

The Nova is a bad design for exploration. It is slow (warp 7 max) also short range. I would discontinue the Novas and build more Intrepid class for the explorer role. Intrepids are fast and long range also good sensors and if it gets in trouble they are better armed and shielded then the Novas. I would also turn about half the Saber production to Defiants. They are smaller less crew and far more powerful then the Sabers. You do make a lot of good points but these are the things I would change. One note when Voyager returned, it made every ship in Starfleet obsolete. This is why Ships with a 100 year design life were not seen 30 years later. The Galaxy class which was 30 to 40 years into a 100 year projected life was decommissioned and most of them were in the spare parts bin.

I think the maintained war time production on saber ( to replace miranda) and akira to replace excelsior. ( but will planning for a née excelsior variant and refit upgrades on existing vessels) I believe the nova as well to replace the oberth. They began the Ross class and mass production of the sovereign class . I believe the whole fleet was equipped with regenerative shields. They began giving priority to exploration. But after 4 years of mass production to replace losses, I believe they had a separate transport command, with oberth and mirandas , and federation transport vessels, like the antares class types and drones . But the nebula was the most produced star ship of the 24th century, and nebula and galaxy and skira type ships had industrial replicators about. . The nova was upgraded for spead. And was used as convoy escorts. And new versions were long range scouts. Also the galaxy class ships built during the war were in need or refit. ( they were launched without scientific exploration, facilities. ( 65 percent empty ) used the space for storage and extra shields. They also made a lot of interipd class ships. But nova , and saber were around for s hundred years they made variants of akira as well .

For every capital ship that forms the centerpiece of command and control starships such as the galaxies and nebulas each one will be assigned a defiant class escort starship, due to their high expense of resources and man hours to construct, maintain and repair along with cutting edge equipment we could not afford to deploy them in paired wolfpacks but they can provide close in proximity support to safeguard the admiralty. Seeing how we are embracing a "we cant afford to throw away soo many lives needlessly if we can help it" we should invest in preserving some of our experienced officers and crewmen. We should also embrace a battle buddy mentality, if possible no more solo cruising if your not an explorer or diplomat, its harder to kamikaze yourself into someone's stardrive section when your taking paired concentrated fire and being outflanked by a secondary element. If you have formed a combined fleet armada for combat operations for every 10 defiant class starships within the fleet you should hopefully received at least 1 prometheus class starship.

I also like the Novas replacing Oberths and larger ships as explorers and Intrepid for diplomacy. I like the Akiras for combat, but they are pretty big. I'd add Defiants because they're small and more maneuverable. I would find a way to take the technology of the Sovereign and fit it into a smaller ship. It's just too big. Sure, have a few in your pocket, but I would love to see that technology put into something more like a beefier Intrepid class with a weapons pod that would make it a torpedo boat like the a Akira while being faster and more maneuverable. And the people who made the first two seasons of Picard clearly did not care about canon so I don't count that, it was just fan fiction. Season 3 I accept though for obvious reasons.

Always found it strange that Star Trek never looked at the civilian merchant fleets. DS9 had Siskos gf running around in a 'small van' docked in the same place and similar size to, the Defiant. The Evergrande, which infamously got caught in a sandstorm and blocked the Suez Canal before being seized by the Egyptian Government, was 450+m and among the largest container ships in the world and longer than most/all military warship afloat today, US Carriers being 300-330m. Scale that up to include Ore freight, Food, Liquefied Gas, Vehicles and Container ships carrying consumer goods, and air freight on top of that and ST becomes a vibrant place with people that need protection. The MV ships of Star Trek should DWARF even a warbird because economies of scale are just so much more efficient when supplying the needs of a planet. Replicators are fine until they're not. You're never going to use a frontline warship to carry 'spark plugs and wiring' to your shipyard, you'd have dedicated supply vessels but the show's producers never showed any interest. The Battle of the Atlantic or, the fate of the USS Indianapolis among so many others, could have made for some epic Trek storytelling.

If you're fleets are drained, and you have to rebuild, building fewer types of ships speeds the rebuild process. By necessity, this forces all of the ships closer to the "all rounder" layout, with less emphasis on specific roles. You also need coverage in all areas, so more small ships is better than a few big ones. I'll agree on the Nova and Intrepid classes, while using whatever remains of the older mothball fleet as a core-worlds place holder. Defiant class is a definate "no" as it is too short ranged, to specific in use, and is and expensive logistical nightmare. Perhaps the Norway class. There is a need for a few, larger ships to anchor battle lines. Perhaps upgunning Galaxy class ships for that along side Sovereign?

Not sure where you're basing your statistics on? STO? (Also I gather you're going with the idea Sabers are big? I mean, I like them but I dunno if they're that multirole on their own.) Also for whatever reason, the Feds seemed to finish the war with a great number of Galaxy-class ships that people tend to presume weren't fully-fitted out or crewed, but those would be a major resource for rebuilding/carrying tremendous numbers of people, maybe huge cargoes, very self-protecting, even. I figure from a lore standpoint, they'd do a lot of redeploying stuff they already had left over, and build up the new fleet to the newer standards as they go. I'd probably go ahead and put Novas on the less-hazardous exploration jobs, and Intrepids for a lot of the classic exploration roles, ...I figure those must be expensive packing in all that capability and comfort and stuff. (What I'd prolly choose to serve on, myself, really. ) Akiras and Sovvies clearly make the best battlewagons, whatever else they're doing. I think almost any of those top of the line ships would be suitable command ships for a battlegroup, but actually the Nebulas with the AWACs sensor dish might make particularly outstanding ones if you wanted to build it up to be a specialized one.
@michaelaldredge-greenwell1692
I liked the Saber class, but those huge, long warp nacelles stuck out at the backs of the ships, literally painting targets on themselves, as if to say: “Here! Hit our huge freaking, unprotected warp nacelles! It’s our weakest point!! That way, you can blow them apart, & our ships would gleefully & gladly blow themselves up, just because of that!! Then, you can be on your merry way…”. I’d recall ALL the Saber & Norway classes, & had their warp nacelles ingrained into the ships, much like the Defiant and Prometheus classes. I’d also have every single ship outfitted with phase cloaking & Borg tech.

The way I understood the deflector dish was, 1, it moves small objects (dust) out of the way when travelling at warp. 2, it's used for communication. 3, it has some kind of link to sensors to do those things. But that's just from watching ST.

I would repurpose vessels into seperate functions as you have done. I've suggested one thing for training Starfleet Crews and new Officers. Four Excelsior 1 class starships I'd assign for training and diplomatic missions. Supported by the Intrepid Class - the NCC 1701 in Wrath of Khan was taken out of frontline service and replaced an old style unrefitted C2 Starship of the Constitution Class. I'd take four of the Excelsior 1 into a combination role of training and diplomatic missions inside Federation Territory. One more thing. I would also make sure that these ships weren't hooked up in the same way against the Borg to a tactical and strategic system that linked the ships together in a line of sight manner. Certain advantages to individual combat styles. And keeping a small reserve out of this system. Just in case of situation in Picard Season 3. Where the Borg co-opted much of the fleet. The four ships of this class would be the last four of the Excelsior 1 class. One of which would be the USS Exuberance. And that would be the Starfleet Academy command ship. I would certainly give Data the job of being the head of Starfleet Academy. Promoting him to Vice Admiral ! Based at Starfleet Academy on San Francisco on Earth. And allowing him to dabble in diplomacy at Bajor for instance. There would be wisdom in doing this. As long as he didn't indulge in a certain poem once spoken on the NCC 1701-D's main shuttle bay. He'd be offworld for at least 35% of the time. I'd certainly include uprated Nebula Class Starships in the backbone but assign more Defiant Class Pocket Battlecruiser squadrons around them. Galaxy Class Starships - I would retain as Command Ships. As you have done. I would rejig the Miranda Class into transport Starships. Olympic Class Hospital Ships - I'd keep those on stream for command of humanitarian assistance missions Most of the fighting arms - I would follow the line of yours with that.. Without the linking up of the more updated ships in the AntiBorg system. Waleburg Class Transport ships would also figure.

I would create three fleets: A Tactical Fleet comprised of your newer Borg era ships to put out on the frontline for offensive and defensive operations. An Exploratory Fleet comprised of classes such as Nova, Intrepid, Galaxy, Nebula & Parliaments to handle all your deep range exploratory and scientific mission outside UFP territory. Finally a Reserved Fleet comprised of the old model ships to be used for internal diplomatic and logistical needs within the UFP, but kept up to date on upgrades and retrofits as much as possible to be able to aid the other two fleets as needed.

Hmmm, i think you got your choices pretty good there, however, i would definitely be adding in some Prometheus class, and Defiant class. Defiant class was designed for battle, it was designed to take a hit and keep going. also very cheap to make, and with an average crew of 80, you would loose less crew if you did loose one. Prometheus is going to stand on its own here, its basically 3 ships in 1, with the latest tech, shields and weapons. Nothing would stand against it, not even a Sovereign. So yea, where you had 6 Akiras and 9 Saber, i would be pulling that back to 6 Saber, 3 Defiant, 4 Akiras and 2 Prometheus. But thats just my opinion

I'd use the Intrepid as exploration, and diplomatic as they can perform both roles effectively. I'd also add the Defiant for combat, even if they were like stationed on boarders out of starbases like on Ds9. Saber is still good as a fleet combat unit but the Defiant does pack more punch. I'd also add either the Norway or Steamrunner as an addition escort cruiser with the Akiras. I know your primary consider is to limit the designs for manufacturing and service reasons but having another design specialising in lighter duties to the Akira makes more sense. Alternatively I suppose the Intrepid could also serve this purpose during wartimes.

I've always felt that the Dominion war was one of the biggest kicks to the Federations "knackers" with Doc Martin boots. Star fleet would never ever be the same after the war. Completely agree with your fleet line up and political overview but one thing is missing....the Federation citizens themselves had to endure being conquered by a foreign military power and no doubt many citizens prayed daily for Star fleet to turn up....but to no avail until the tide of the war began to turn. Also many civilians may have lost their lives to resistance movements/sabotage etc. Post war, the federation member worlds would "demand" that Star fleet take a more aggressive approach to make sure that "THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN or being a member of the Federation is meaningless if you cannot defend us from a hostile species" Star fleet might even consider reactivating the concept a planetary Home Guard or even ship board Marines to counter the threat of the Jem'Hadar etc etc. As one Star fleet veteran of the war might put it. "It's all very well exploring the stars and meeting new civilizations but there maybe other "Dominions" out there.....and we need to be ready if diplomacy fails!" Subbed to your brilliant channel. P.S. You might consider doing an episode on how the war affected the Federation's citizens and how the loss of life under those brutal regimes affected Federation policy going forward.

I do agree the Federation needed to reduce the clutter they had with the number of ships classes they had in service. Problem was the Federation was coming off a long period of piece. Sure there were some minor wars but nothing to divert them from their primary mission is exploration and scientific research. If not for the Borg forcing them to start designing more military focused ships they would have much worse off. One thing I will point out was the federation’s economy is massive and they are a post scarcity society. They can build as many ships as they need no matter the class. Their problem is manpower. Me plan for post war recovery would be to start retiring the older less capable classes with new construction. Scale back exploration a bit and increase their diplomatic efforts across the board. I do think a post war federation fleet would be very different than is was in the past with more warships in the mix.

I like your ideas about logistics in the wake of the war but I’m fairly sure some of your numbers are off. In terms of Firepower and durability I’m fairly confident that any Excelsior still in service has the Saber beat, it’s the heavy firepower for its size along with the maneuverability that made her a better combat ship. And a small fast isn’t necessarily great for convoy duty, it’s speed is too restricted protecting cargo ships. And the Saber doesn’t have the internal space to handle cargo duty itself. And the Nova should never ever be sent on an exploratory mission, that’s exactly what happened to the Equinox. The Nova was designed for close range scientific missions, basically replacing the Oberth. It was slow and had minimal defenses. Better than the Oberth but that’s not saying much. They later redesigned a Nova that was better equipped for those missions, but we’ve never seen one of those before the early 25th century. The Sovereigns are also supposed to be the most extremely resource intensive ships to build at this point to the point that there weren’t enough to have them on the front lines often during the war

I'm old. I was around when the original series originally aired. Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek with the intent of shedding light on social/humanitarian issues. The television network that aired Star Trek had some influence over its content. At the time, westerns were popular so Star Trek was sold to the network as a "space western" (a lie). Much of the action in Star Trek was included to satisfy the network. With that said, and the need to maintain continuity over the years, Star Trek has always had a backward approach to war and fighting in space. Big, expensive ships that take years to build wallowing around shooting each other hoping their shields fail before ours is laughable. The answer to how Star Trek should do it is how other shows did/do it as well as how we currently do it. How did Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica do it? How does Star Wars do it? What are the most valuable naval vessels and how do they operate? The big, expensive ships that take years to build are full of fighters and always surrounded by support/escort ships. What will be the latest real-life ship to be named Enterprise? It will be an enormous aircraft carrier. If all goes well, it will have taken 11 years to build and make ready for service (in 2028). What were the two before it? Aircraft carriers. What was the most decorated U.S. Navy ship of World War II that served with unparalleled distinction? The first aircraft carrier named Enterprise. Disclaimer: This is the opinion of the author and is offered for entertainment purposes only. No offense was intended.
