Too bad they don't list the musicians on these releases. I recognized Elvin but couldn't put a name to the face anymore and didn't feel like digging through stacks of old vinyl just to figure out who I was watching.
Ive always loved Vans music and as a performer he was one of the most interesting performers of the 70s. He had a unique stage presence in a good way !
Interviewer: "So Bob, who would be your favorite singer these days?" Dylan (smiling): "Well, that would have to be Van, I mean, wouldn't it?". In Bob We Trust. Van is the Man.
Absolutely love Van Morrison! Reliving my preteen through early adult years via Midnight Special when we were fortunate to have been blessed with real artists and musicians! Rock on everyone!
Just noticed that is Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship lead vocalist) and his backup vocalist from Elvin Bishop's lead vocalist from "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" are singing backups on this performance.
Fell in love with Van Morrison’s voice, when, as a young teen, I heard “Gloria”. Later, in the best summer ever, “Brown-eyed Girl” was my theme song. His deep album cuts are so soulful and evocative. Van The Man Forever.
This version is all about the Elvin Bishop band doing their thing with one of the great troubadours of our lifetime. Elvin in the final minute just lights that fire
I love that at about 2:45 he looks at the horn section and sings their part and then they NAIL IT with the chords! It became a chill jam and then Van say's, "BRING IT UP!" and it starts kicking Butt until the end. Pro Musicians like that are amazing!
Absolutely! Van Morrison with Elvin Bishop, Reni Slais & Mickey Thomas Melvin Seals: piano Donny Baldwin: drums, percussion Elvin Bishop: guitar Johnny 'V' Vernazza: guitar, backing vocals Michael Brooks: bass Horn Section: , Billy Slais, Tom Poole and the late Jerry McKinney.
@@AMEER-114- Never occurred to me before listening here, but this could easily be the E-Street band backing the Vanman. Bruce did not have as many horns back then, but this was the sound he seemed to be aiming at (IMHO).
How good do you have to be to have Mickey Thomas singing your backup and Elvin Bishop lending a little blues guitar? This is wonderful. Always loved Van Morrison. "Crazy Love" is one of my all time favorites.
Vans looking real good in this period! Still pretty fit, inspired records,...not quite as pissed off at the world... Love Van, LOVE! But I do wish my man had a little more chill and enjoyed it more.
Having been in Van's position myself (at a much smaller level), I can see he is just trying to get through this song with as much dignity as he can hold together. The Guitar players are playing so loud that he needs to hold his right ear closed to hear himself sing on pitch. Also, the guitar players are overplaying big time and can't play an R&B song to save their lives! Im willing to bet the background singers are not his usual vocalists either (probably Don Kirshner house vocalists ) because they are not harmonizing with him work a dam. You can see It all just sucks the life out of his performance and what you have is just a complete lack of enthusiasm. Poor Van , so very talented! ( I bet he would want to burn this video, but I guess we are lucky to have it!)
The musicians are Elvin Bishop and Elvin Bishop Band. The legendary Mickey Thomas is the male backing singer with Reni Simon (Slais) next to him; also part of the Elvin Bishop Band.
They were also on the program? If you've followed this channel for very long, you will have noticed many "dream collaborations" (e.g. Bee Gees and Jerry Lee Lewis, Bee Gees and Wilson Pickett, Journey and Herbie Hancock, Little Feat w/ Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, etc.).
