After a day and a half of editing the video about replacing the oil pan on my Saturn, I wasn't anywhere close to finishing. I really wanted to have a new video up today, so this is a video about how to play Dominoes!
Dominoes is strangely complicated, and finding definitive rules to a basic game is a little painful. But my wife and I did a little research, and here's what we came up with:
Start with a box of dominoes and a score pad. Dump the dominoes face down on the table and mix them up. If there are 2 players, each player gets 7 dominoes. For more than 2 players, each player gets 5. Players randomly select their dominoes and can look at what they have, but do not show their opponents. The remaining dominoes are set aside, face down. This is called the "bone yard".
The player with the highest "double" domino goes first. If no player has a double, the player with the domino with the most dots goes first. In either case, the "high" domino is the first domino played.
If the first domino is a double, it is called a "spinner" and thus may be played on all 4 sides. At the end of each player's turn, they total the dots on the "ends" of the path so for the first turn, that means just the total number of dots on the domino. If the total is evenly divisible by 5, the player adds the total to their score. If the total is not divisible by 5, the player gets no points.
Game play continues with each player taking their turn by placing dominoes with a at least 1 side that matches the end where they are placing it and scoring as described above. If a player does not have any dominoes in their hand that match, they have to draw from the boneyard until they have a usable domino then play it.
If there are no dominoes left in the boneyard and a player still cannot play, they lose their turn.
The first person to use all their dominoes is the winner of the round. The other players must then add up all the dots on all dominoes remaining in their hand, then round up to the nearest 5 points. Those points are awarded to the winner of the round.
Different versions vary, but most games end when a player reaches 100 or 150 points. The first player to reach the set score wins the game.
