I'm glad she said "Don't wear your natural hair to my events" It makes it easier for me to SKIP her events. I feel sad for her because she doesn't understand that a Black woman's journey to have our natural hair accepted included the fight to have her darker skin complextion accepted as well. A fight for acceptance of our natural hair included the fight for acceptance of all things that make us black women. I'm sad she doesn't know this. If we don't allow US to show up as US, then they won't either. I don't want to be at her events.
While this is true the response and outrage to things like this (similar things have happen a lot recently) also show that we are heading in the right direction and are no longer being basically gaslighted into thinking our natural selfs arent good enough. Which I feel we should applaud ourselves a bit for. We're nowhere near where we should be but we are standing strong against this type of mindset which is great because a few years ago this would've been seen as her trying to help other bw etc.

Women of color have been critized for wearing their natural hair in various settings and it's a travesty some of our own people are a part of this tye of discrimination!
I only see a handful of my friends Black women who wears natural hair daily. I wear my hair 99.99% of the time. I have adult Friends from Nigeria I know them for over 8 years. I have never seen them wear their natural hair, always wearing a wig and their children do the same. My friends always say your hair is different Rosie. This woman was just raised a certain way, hopefully she can learn from the feedback.
In my opinion, this is a mindset. So a man thinks so, is he. Which means, you are the way you think. I never wear a wig before. I bought one once to help grow my hair by trying to protect it from the weather but when I put it on, I looked bad so I did not wear it anywhere not even at home and I dumped it. It was a curly wig.
What that sister said is a full on disgrace smh. I can point to many examples of a natural woman who look absolutely stunning, well dressed and all while wearing their natural 4c hair. Chimamanda ngozi adichie is just one. Stunning, Beautiful!!!
I don't like when women say to wear your natural hair. My natural hair is part of who I am, I was born with it, I did not buy it, so I cannot wear it, because it is part of me. If anything I can choose to neat it up instead of leaving it messy.
Humbly I admit that 7 years ago I felt prettier in my straight hair wigs and felt I looked more polished and professional in the wigs. Underneath the wig, I had a TON of long hair that I contemplated shaving off to accommodate my wigs better. It took my white partner of nearly 7 years to convince me to wear my natural hair. He thought is was beautiful. ❤ I did not think I was beautiful with my natural hair😢. I started wearing my natural hair and had NO IDEA what to do with it outside of braids under wigs. People at work stared at me making me feel even more insecure. Also I had a ton of gray hair since my early 30’s. It took me about a year to get used to my hair and the way I looked in it. After that year transition I began to LOVE myself in my natural hair. I can honestly say NO WIG IS BETTER THAN MY HAIR…including natural hair wigs. I say all of this because I was that girl that everyone is smacking down. I am sad for her. We should approach our sister with the love that my white partner approached me. We should embrace her and encourage her to see the beauty of her natural hair. She will overcome this issue with love and acceptance.

Natural hair is sooo beautiful....it is truly a gift from God...we as black women need to "Wake Up" and know that it is some of the most beautiful and versatile hair. And we need to learn how to take care of it and love it!
When I big chopped my hair and tried to go natural hair years ago I was very uncomfortable thinking l didn't look good and I didn't know how to take care of it correctly so as soon as someone made a embarrassing comment and laughed about how my hair looked I immediately went back to relaxing and weave, but four years ago my partner who is a white would get so upset with me every time I would press my hair or put on a wig to go out he would say " your hair is so beautiful, I love your natural hair" but I just couldn't accept it, finally something clicked the last time I took out my weave and got my hair trimmed into a nice fro (I had been transitioning) I got a lot of compliments, I never put another weave in since 3 years, today I have learned to take care of my natural hair and it is beautiful to me, also l feel a new Love for myself as a woman, I feel more free to be myself ❤
I agree with you on the editing . I saw the whole interview somewhere and she mentioned she would wear her natural hair for her wedding because it’s something different . To me she says some contradicting things . But I hope we can get out of that mindset that our natural hair isn’t beautiful and not suitable for events . A lot of it has to with how we were raised and what we see, some things are just passed down so strongly that we don’t even know why we feel this way. I remember transitioning and it was somewhere we were going and I ended up straightening my hair because my own mom was like don’t you want to look nice .
In college a hairstylist was fussing at me the whole time he was cutting off my straight permed hair... until he was done. Then he expressed amazement at how beautiful I looked, and how the natural Afro brought out my eyes. I'm wearing a crochet twist style now since my sister wanted to do it for me as a Christmas gift, and I'm hoping it will help it grow. But to be honest, I now feel weird at the thought of going back to my simple Afro after so many compliments ony twists. Im so grateful for this video!
Love your sessions. Love this. Turned 65 last August. Natural since 2011. Hair doesn't grow anymore. Keep thinning 4c hair plait most days. Using glycerine with water a lot. Have baobab creme, Cantu leave in conditioners, Blue Magic oil petroleum greases, sometimes, but still like glycerin and water. Learn so much from you.
I wear make up once in a blue moon. I did not wear make up in the whole of 2023 and with hair I just bought a wig in December just because I want to grow my natural hair but otherwise I love my natural hair. Black is beautiful!
I'm a 63 y/o AA woman. I grew up with afros and twists. It's sad that the young lady is still spewing that European standard crap. She's wearing someone else's hair or some synthetic strands.
For me i don't wear wigs because they lower my self esteem, i tried but when someone appreciated me i felt bad about it,so i stopped and i don't mind not being invited thank,because am to proud of my hair.😊😊😊😊😊
Ive always been comfortable in my own skin but I’m so so so grateful for my husband who continues to encourage me even more to wear my own hair and ditch the makeup and I’m so thankful for that❤
She meant what she said. I have that confused kind of hair. Some family members call it beautiful others say they will not braid my hair because it cuts their hands. Confused hair that I absolutely love. I have several different types of hair strands growing out my scalp and they just behave the way they behave. So. I do what it likes done to it and live my best positive life.

the thing is I wear wigs often at least until I complete my 5 year waist length journey, but that comment still pissed me off and many other black women off. I love my hair, and love to play in it (which is why I am determined to put it away to reach my goals) I love hairstyles and the absolute divinity of my hair.

I absolutely love my natural hair. I really cannot relate to her. I have always turned head with my natural hair. I go to the hair salon to get trims or hair cuts if I want to change the shape of my hair. But I mainly style my hair in wash and goes, or twist outs. I wish the love I have for my hair on all women. I wish she knew how beautiful she could look naturally.
You're right it's very sad. We have bought into the idea that we should hide our beautiful hair under wigs and weaves. I've had natural and relaxed hair, now at 60 I'm enjoying the hair I was born with. Also I've never had more complements on my hair. I've never been one to fit in. I used to think Africa was the Mecca for natural beauty, but now I am seeing so much skin bleaching and lace fronts with the women on the continent that I have peeled opinion that back. Self hate is world-wide. I have got pushback from wearing my natural high from family members, just because I don't wear it stretched or disguise it's kinkiness.
Honestly, are women who tear down other women really Sisters?! A sister doesn't disrespect and degrade. Some of these people, I feel it's time to shake the dust, pray for them and move on because only God can restore what's inside of broken people chasing a carnal standard. 🤷🏽♀️
I don’t have the mindset of wearing wigs and all the other extras. I love my natural hair, and I love my melanin. Girl, your natural hair is popping. And yes, you're right. Her wig looks hideous.
I'll be honest with myself and say i'm guilty of that mindset. I live in Europe. I don't think my 4c hair is for the workplace. Somehow i feel it would be a barrier to step up in my career. I don't feel pretty with my natural hair, this is largely due to my hair not being deemed as pretty by my surroundings and due to my own feelings about by hair. There is a lot of trauma connected to 4c hair for a lot of us.
Thank you for your candor. If I may offer a suggestion it is that you to practice embracing your natural hair. Start wearing your God given hair in the house, to the store and most every place that you feel comfortable. Look in the mirror and say positive affirmations to yourself like I love my hair. Start slow and stick with it and one day you will be confident enough to wear your God given crown everyday anywhere💕🙏🏾

I have a few things to say but before I do that, can we talk about your facial expressions throughout this video?! 🤣🤣🤣 It's giving!!! Anyway, firstly, I also don't know what's worse between her statement and her friends hyping her up. I honestly don't. The entire thing was just... I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. I agree, it's sad that her mindset represents the mindsets of so many people in our society still. We still don't see how beautiful we are, we still consider ourselves and our appearance in its natural state inferior. She clearly does not associate her own natural skin and hair with utmost beauty and luxury, and as a result she expects other people to also not do the same. Fun fact, when I big chopped about 2 years ago now, it was about 4 days before one of my friends' birthday. She was throwing a BEAUTIFUL, LUXURIOUS celebration. I showed up in my expensive heels and dress, and a 4b/4c TWA in all its glory. I had a wig but I didn't wear it because I felt more comfortable and beautiful in my short hair. Everyone at that event, most of which are not black, were complementing my beauty. This is to emphasise the point that other people see our beauty, it's high time we start seeing it too. There is another thing that was kinda trending on the internet a while ago that I think either has been, or will be affected by this woman's statement: The "death" of the natural hair community. I remember the first video I watched on this channel was of you explaining why you will not leave the natural hair community/movement. This was at the time when a lot of people were going back to relaxer, saying they were tired or something like that. A lot of other natural hair influencers were saying that they felt their content was getting repetitive, which is a fair point that I can understand. Everyone had done countless styles, wash days, hair talks and so on and so forth on their channels, and I understand that it may have felt to people that there was nothing left to say. However, these podcast hosts just came out and made it undeniably clear that the need for the natural hair movement is still more serious than ever. I don't know, but I think that's quite interesting. Last but definitely not least, the "apology" statement. For goodness sake, that is not an apology. It's a waste of our time. 13:14 "... if certain things were taken out of context" ???? If a person is to apologise, they must always apologise for THEIR ACTIONS, not how other people reacted to their actions. And the word "if" does not belong in a sincere apology statement. How can you mean an apology if you are not sure whether or not it's necessary? And I agree, there's absolutely no way someone could have edited those words into her mouth and those facial and body expressions onto her and her friends, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. She said what she said, and in my opinion, she's not really sorry. Anyway, I hope one day her perspective of black beauty will be as gorgeous and confident as she seems to be (even with a wig that's crying for help). I hope that whichever kids she picks up from school have women in their lives who are role models and a representation of natural black beauty so that they grow up to know better. And I want to say a massive thank you to you for always standing by the message and the movement. Your hair is absolutely stunning, you are absolutely gorgeous. The community has never needed you more than it does now.

It saddens me when I hear these types of things. I'm thinking maybe she had a bad experience or witnessed someone have a bad experience with their natural hair. There is also the issue of her shade of black. Being dark skinned myself, I can tell you no matter what part of the world you're from, it just hits different. combine the complexion and anything perceived to be "unkept" hair and you end up with these kinds of results. I've witnessed a friend of mind combing her 4 year old's hair and she was bawling. Her mom made the statement half jokingly that she should have made sure her dad was Indian. These types of little jabs stays with women through their lives consciously or unconsciously.
A lot of times, the real issue with black women that have that young lady's attitude about natural hair, actually has nothing to do with their hair. Unfortunately, they usually have low self-esteem in general. Until she acknowledges and rectifies what is at the root of how she feels about herself, how she wears her hair isn't going to make a difference.
Agree. I am Nigerian and the real issue is self esteem. I have natural hair and like to wear single twists and braids, I noticed that I only get compliments when I have a wig on.

Most Africans have a problem with natural hair because most of us don't know how to handle it so it doesn't look neat. I literally had to go behind my mom's back to go cut my hair so I could restart because I really wanted an afro. I had long hair but it was relaxed ever since I was a child so I couldn't even remember it. Honestly the first couple of years my looked like trash I won't lie 😂😂😂 but I'm slowly growing into it learning how to take care of it. Which is what I think we should all encourage and I thank you for being one of the people doing so

Most people with this mindset don’t take care of their natural hair so they don’t value it. Natural hair can be as classy as you want it to be for any event. Ive seen beautifully styled natural hair on brides and people at formal events.
I think that when we hear something like this we truly have to admit that people like her don't feel good about themselves because of how the media have presented black people for so many years for some it's hard to live our true natural selves and for me it's hard to belive a young woman of African decent would go on a show and talk like this and her gang laughing at what she said is even more shameful,the white man's damage is still here in some of our people 💔 it's hard to get to the bottom of this and I cry for these women.
I think at some point communities have to take responsibility for their own attitudes. This is a mother who will pass those beliefs to her children. Attitudes shared by her colleagues. Those women are professionals who will interview other black women and judge them. The main attitude to change towards black natural beauty is those of black people.
Please don't let what anyone says bother you in any way. Just be who you are and accept you as you are no matter what who says about our hair in its natural state.

It's really not a problem for me. I wouldn't go to her event. It's only my opinion and it's as valid as hers. I realize that not everyone wears natural hair or thinks it is gorgeous, and that is their right. Except for nine months, I've been natural all of my life and wouldn't have it any other way. It's perfect for weddings, galas, balls, church, cruises, and the grocery store! The internet is full of ridiculousness as well as beneficial information. I prefer to encourage and compliment women who I see IRL wearing their natural hair because there is nothing I can do about someone spouting off on the internet. I'm sure this lady would not approve of my version of a ponytail. I don't slick it back with gel, and it's just held with a silk/satin scrunchie.
I had to go to my daughter’s school because she was wearing her natural hair in twist. Mind you her hair goes to the middle of her back but you know with twist they shrink. I had to go to my daughter school because a girl was making fun of her. I wasn’t playing that at all. And as I look around little girls got braids to their butt. Nothing is wrong with it. My daughter does sometimes but she won’t be picked on for wearing her hair. It’s sad people don’t teach their daughters it’s okay to wear their hair.
This was embarrassing to all black women within my family we have various textures on our heads and to start singleing out who hair is good enough to attend a family wedding, christening etc why would we feel the need to do that. Hair is hair it's not that deep.
That video did indeed go viral, and I think that’s what she wanted, these days people will say controversial stuff just to get views and fame--celebrities do it too. If you think about it what does an expensive dress and expensive heels have to do with natural hair?--NOTHING! 😂 Her event isn’t something I would attend anyways, I rather go to a Green Day concert and rock a fro hawk❤. We are often our own worst enemy. Decades of societal pressure and hair shaming from our so-callled friends have scarred many women. I'm going to say the "s" word, Slavery, yes this is a legacy of slavery as well. Black women were made to cover up their hair. This is deep seated in so many of us as it goes to how we feel about ourselves and what makes us beautiful. Dark vs. Light, kinky vs straight, the so-called good hair vs nappy hair. Loving your hair begins with loving yourself. You can't have one without the other. I was one of those women many years ago. I left relaxers behind in 2009, not because I wanted to, but because I had to. A salon owner burned out most of my hair ( past my shoulder hair length), with a product that also burned my scalp. My scalp had burns, and the density of my hair was gone. I had to start over. I found my original stylist, who treated my scalp and brought my hair back to a healthy state, but as I stated the density has never returned. I say all this to say that our hair IS our crowning glory. We should embrace that major part of ourselves and showcase it. We need to encourage and build each other up not tear each other down. When you allow anyone to put limits on the essence of who you are, you can never truly be your best "self!" So ladies, Love yourself first, before you give your love, admiration, or adoration to an undeserving person.

They hate their natural hair and want other black women to also hate it, here in Brazil black women aware of the racist system use their natural hair, their black power as we call it here, wearing lace or smooth wig has never been common here, but UNFORTUNATELY this North American culture of self-hatred of black women in relationship to your hair is coming here, black women with lace and wig has grown a lot, it saddens me!
she's not wrong... natural hair is like having a natural face or a natural clothing for everywhere, no you make yourself presentable from head-to-toe, dress appropriately for where you are going. Hair should be done, nails should be nice and cleaned (cooking and cleaning makes it dirty especially under the nail bed, etc.) clothes should be cleaned and according to the place you are going so my home dress and natural hair look... no I will not wear that to go to an event, other nationalities understand this, even we African/Black people know this... before colonization, we knew this and we dressed head-to-toe accordingly, an African bride for example was presented well, espcially her crown/hair. Most African cultures have a hair regalia, i.e., beads, head wraps, according to your culture so what she is saying is not wrong or mean or bad it is true. We should remember this, yes maybe her delivery was not friendly, but she is not lying. We should always be presentable. And I think the reason she said natural hair for church is because you are going into the house of the Lord, so modesty is key and natural hair and modesty go hand in hand and still the hair must be neat and kept well. A Ponytail is traditional even to African, it is not a European hairstyle, ponytail is global.

I'm so sorry to say this about my African sistas but some of you have gotten that misconception of what has been a traumatic experience for some of us American (black) women. Any woman who has had to change their hair to "fit" in. We wouldn't be accepted in schools, be able to work or to attend certain events. It has always been a struggle. Do the research and the history of our hair. It has always been a trigger point. This mindset is what they want us to follow to make us feel inferior always. To be insecure about our looks. So many of our people do not realize that it's a narrative being pushed. I love our people! No matter where they come from in this world. We are what they hate themselves for not being. "Natural air" Is that what i heard? 😂😂. Obviously i see someone whose jealous of those who have been able to grow long healthy natural hair. She cant grow her hair and also hasnt taken the time to learn about natural hair. Natural hair is even more beautiful than that trash of a wig she was putting on.
