DON’T Buy a Car On FB Marketplace Before Watching This! 

I always find it odd that a lot of people act like the VIN is their social security number.

Be wary of “need gone asap” sellers and check local pages for stolen vehicles.

1) Don't put down money until you have the title in your hand. 2) if the car is equipped with OBD2 (96 or newer) take an OBD2 reader with you, they are cheap now. Plug it in and make sure the I/M readiness test has been done. If not drive the car around until the computer does the test. If the I/M readiness has not been completed there is a chance the CEL codes have been cleared or the battery has been disconnected to clear any CEL codes. If the seller won't let you use an OBD2 reader walk away.

"It's OK to walk away" I can't tell you how many cars I had already bought in my mind, before actually buying them.... And then going to check it out and before I lay a hand on it, I've pretty much already transferred the money 🤣🤣🤣 That is GREAT advice. But it's extremely hard to follow 🤣

A year ago I was looking for a 350z. I drove a few hours multiple times and walked away every time because of weird CEL’s, bad ride quality and just shitty cars that looked completely different from the pictures. On one of my trips, on the way back my wife talked me into looking at a 2012 mustang v6 and I was like hell no a v6. But I looked anyways and for the same price as a 2003 z, I got a faster car with premium (way nicer) interior and cheaper and easier to work on. I’ve bought other cars and sold them but kept this one and now I threw some turbos on am and making 600hp on stock motor. I love this car. Ain’t no 350z gonna handle that kind of power on a stock motor

Bought a 99 gs400, 5 months ago, for 2500. Turns out it had a salvage title and hadn't been registered to an actual person in the last 12 years. Bounced around from used dealerships and auctions and insurance companies. Took 2 months to get the title straightened out. But now, it's been the absolute best car I've ever had, and I love it. Thought I was gonna get shafted for a while, but it actually worked out great in the end.

Something my Dad always used to say...LOOK UNDERNEATH THE CAR for leaks and the pavement it's sitting over! Leaks can be a deal breaker!... especially if you don't want to fix everything that's expensive!😜

I love and hate marketplace with a passion. On one hand people just constantly overvalue everything or leave you hanging, and on the other hand you sometimes find gems. Thankfully after 6 months I found my gem.

I’m buying and selling cars and let me tell you how dumb sellers can be. I reach out within minutes of them posting and letting them know I am serious and they read and ignore messages. Then, most get offended about asking the main questions regarding title, registration. They’re never honest. They’re only honest when I show up in person and they see how quickly I check everything out very well and they assume I am a mechanic.

From experience, check and make sure all the doors lock with key fob (if it has one) and that the lock cylinder works properly. I bought a car from a dealership and the drivers door didn't lock at all and had to replace parts. They claimed they never thought to check that.

Ooooof Bought my veloster at night not the worst but would have noticed the gap in the fog light. When I took the bumber off it was epoxied in place with some bumper work. Clean title. Best assumption is small fender bender. My body work neighbor said the frame is not bent so thats nice but could have used that to haggle with the dealership.

Got shafted for 11k on a 335xi with 126k miles… my mistake was I flew out to him and my flight landed past midnight do to layovers and I didn’t get a good view of the car before I left…. Now I’m having to pull the engine for maintenance work and a single turbo conversion 😅😅

Make sure the car is COLD when you show up, don't be afraid to crawl around it and look at the bushings or anything else that may be broke, loose or missing. People will be their car together for random reasons then try and pawn it off on someone who doesn't know anything. Take a friend! Look at the WIRING under the hood or if there are extra switches, most people can't wire correctly. Take it for a LONG drive, not around the block. Shut it off a few times after it gets hot to see if there are issues or leaks. Finally, of you can't make it to look at your dream car because it's far away, then it's not your dream car. It's easier to waste time and money when traveling to look at something rather than buying blind, having it shipped and ending up with a 💩 box.

Also there’s too many car flippers with auction papers, or floating the title. The worst, are cars that their mileage has been rolled back. A quick vin check will confirm the mileage.

I would say know what some of the most common issues with the platform are. This one bit me in the ass when I got my FRS. I didn’t know that the oil pickup valve gets clogged with silicone and can starve the engine of oil and spin a rod bearing. 3 weeks after I got the car that exact thing happened to mine even though it had the recall done on it. Which I also didn’t know was an issue. I’m not really mad about it though because it gave me a good excuse to put a built stage 2 FA20 in it along with a turbo

Toyota/Lexus has site where you can lookup the service history of the car. I was excited about a car that had a decent history on the CarFax but the Toyota site listed a rotting frame and not safe to drive. On the CarFax it listed as the car was inspected but no mention of the bad frame.

Buying shit on FB is hit or miss. Alot people wanna sell stuff but they cant respond or dont want my money.

I always write the VIN down to do my due diligence, bring a code reader, bring a blank bill of sale with me because sellers never seem to have one it seems and bring a certified check. I also check the sellers driver’s license to verify they say who they are. If all of that checks out along with the shape of the vehicle then they have a deal. I don’t dicker on prices. I have no problem paying what they ask for if they are on the up and up which I find out awfully quick with the code reader, VIN number and driver’s license because they get nervous and ask questions 😂

You start negotiating before even going to the car. If not set a price based off the pics. If something is off when you see it then negotiate again.

Pay attention to small details. I was going to buy an automatic prelude. Noted that automatic prelude transmissions are not known to be good. Noted it was the only car backed into a spot and not pulled in. Was being sold by a corner lot on Facebook marketplace. Was red with a very distinct, odd shaped patch of rust on one of the rear fenders, not deep just weird looking. I have since seen that same vehicle relisted twice with transmission trouble. Spend a lot of time looking at the car and its surroundings, white might look like a diamond at first turns out to be shattered glass when you take a closer look. Think about the possible reasons for things. It'll save you money. And don't be upset if it doesn't work. I got my 1st car was literally the last option before I had to go to college and wouldn't have time to search for one. 1 year later I absolutely love it, it's not the coolest thing in the world or perfect but I've had fun with it, it fits me, and I plan to keep working it up

Try to do a cold start on a car you’re interested in. Toyota’s and Lexus engines are notorious for cam shaft clattering on cold start and go away after a few minutes. If you have to meet somewhere this is obviously not going to happen.

About 95% of the car sellers on FB MP are not US citizens. Their communication is horrible! They also will have their listings posted under mulitple FB users. Most are salvage cars or rebuilt titles. Some disclose this but some don't. Most will not reply back when asking for an actual pic of the odometer and VIN on the vehicle, yet they state "serious inquiries only". Yeah right!

Best advice? Bring skmebody who knows the car more than you do if yku have no idea what youre lookin at. Bring your nissan friend if you see a kickass z but it seems sketch, bring your Mitsubishi guy if you see an FTO that seemingly has your name on it. Never go in blind and hace somebody who knows more than you do every time. A second opinion cant hurt

Just a rack and pinion issue I gotta replace. He even sent me videos of everything I asked before I went, so I’m pretty confident in this, especially after seeing it and driving it in person.
