Timothy was a passionate environmentalist and had a strong desire to co-exist with nature. He founded a bear protection group called Grizzly People. In 2003 he travelled to the Katmai National Park in Alaska with his girlfriend Amie Huguenard. Timothy kept diaries, photographed and filmed footage of his many expeditions. He had previously visited the area and stayed there every summer for thirteen years. He was convinced that he could co-exist with the native coastal brown bears, and believed they were accepting of his presence. The couple were still at the park that Autumn. At that time of year the bears are particularly aggressive as they try and feed as much as possible before hibernation in the winter months.
Unfortunately the couple were attacked by a large male bear. They were both killed and almost completely eaten. The video camera recovered at the site contained six minutes of audio tape of their horrific deaths.
The German film director Werner Herzog made a documentary about Timothy’s life and can be seen hear speaking to Timothy’s friend Jewel Palovak and warning her to never listen to the audio footage of the attack.

@@ishmiel21 Timothy Treadwell had to use bear spray during a previous encounter years before to ward off a bear. He said he "felt terrible" about it. Well, now he's dead for refusing to pack it. Bear spray could've saved their lives, gun would be used only as a last resort. The bears ended up being killed by park rangers anyway so they could investigate the scene.

He was lucky for a long time that's for sure. His main mistake was convincing himself to stay longer with bears who didn't recognize him,used to him. Not saying he was some sort or bear whisperer!! But at least in the summer, he was careful enough in the very beginning that the bears realized he wasn't a threat. All animals have a daily routine...he wasn't part of the bears routine when it got closer to hibernation time! He got too confident over the years and didn't admit that a lot of it was luck!!

Timothy was someone who wouldn't listen to sound reason. He was warned many, many times by knowledgeable people, such as Park Rangers, and bear behavior experts. He felt like the bears were like family and would never harm him. His girlfriend was afraid of the bears. She kept refusing to go with him until he finally broke her down and convinced her that she was perfectly safe with him. One night, he stupidly set up their tent in the midst of some brambles. Park Rangers say never to do this, as the bears won't see you until they are on top of you, and they don't like to be surprised. That's exactly what happened. It angers me a great deal that he hounded his girlfriend into doing what she didn't want to do, and was afraid. He got both of them mauled and eaten alive. A rebel who refused to listen to reason. ☹️

Which raises a question of one's personal responsibility for his/her life. If she was afraid of the bears, she should have taken weapons or bear spray with her on a trip. Even though I doubt of course that bear spray would have helped. But she should not have ventured there without a rifle. It's her life she's responsible for. If she couldn't get a rifle she shouldn't have come along with Timothy to that area. I understand he may have had a problem with that but then so be it, she shouldn't have gone.

@marcyoverby3817 it's hard to explain in a few sentences but rangers have an overwhelming workload a lot of the time and a huge territory to cover. They'd run him off (they had to do it a lot, he pushed the limits of his legal right to be in the park a lot, had a dismissive attitude towards the rangers because they didn't buy his nonprofessional woo woo expertise.) He was an absolute nuisance, then he'd just move camp and they'd have to keep tabs on him while doing the same for a bunch of other ill-prepared tourists unware of all the ways Alaska likes to kill humans. At the end of the day, his violations were low grade and arresting him wouldn't have deterred him from returning anyway. He was a waste of time and resources, a pain in the ass who thought he was a bear whisperer, and freely chose to put himself at risk.

Anyone with a lick of sense wouldnt try to live among apex predators for 5 minutes, let alone weeks or months, because they would know that no matter how friendly the bears may seem, sooner or later, youre on the menu. And if they did, they'd have fireams and keep a safe distance. People like Treadwell think those bears are 'friends' and that they know something other people dont. Treadwell killed himself, his GF and that bear with his delusional past time and lack of prudence.

I read his - and his girlfriend's - story in Readers Digest years ago. It was the most horrific story I have ever read. I remember the pilot was walking towards the camp and he got a strong sense of danger. He went back to the copter and went back up...when he flew over the camp, he saw the carnage. A bear was still feasting. Awful. Just awful. :-(

From what I remember the audio of his death (heavily searched for on the internet) was recovered by authorities and given to his ex wife with the advice “never, ever listen to that”. Supposedly she locked it away so it was never heard. There are versions of it online but i think those are faked.

Tim was incredibly foolish and reckless. He basically ignored everyone's warnings, set up camp on a known bear trail so that they would walk by his tent, and refused to carry bear spray. He was in the worst place at the worst time with no way to defend himself. What happened to him was terrible, but it could've been avoided.

His actions resulted in more grizzly deaths than the imaginary poachers he was there to deter. He was mentally unstable, should have been medicated, was there during a time that was known to be dangerous, and , in the end, got himself, his female companion, and many grizzlies killed for his ego and hubris.

He made it for 13 summers out there, before his bipolar condition influenced him to make the bad decision to go back instead of continuing to go home as he usually did that time of year. He was also sort of a pioneer. He was right, no one else had been hanging around grizzlies the way he had done for many years. He discovered how to communicate with them to a degree.

Reckless to the point of being better off playing Russian Roulette. I got to spend several years in and around Glacier National Park including a book w/tons of research. A major point emphasized is that bears can be as individual in behavior as humans so all bets are off; assumption will kill you. PLUS they enter a type of "simmering frenzy" mode at that time of year where approaching hibernation triggers them to eat as much as possible while there's time. It's thought this doesn't make them more aggressive but may make them attack/try to eat something they ignored in the past. I've had dozens of bear encounters; 90% surprises as they suddenly dash away from a close position I never saw OR, like this GIANT silvertip grizzly the size of a garden shed and likely old that I came upon walking up a hill into a meadow, completley ignore you as unworthy of notice or meal. BUT seeing them is all it takes to know getting close is a mistake. And even that might not help after watching a huge black bear go from a suspicious back-leg stand to a sudden drop to race across a deserted Hwy 49, into a snowmelt-swollen Two Medicine River, swim across as if the strong currents were nothing and burst up on the high bank, shake off the water like a dog and GONE ... all in about 12 seconds. Had it been after ME, it would have covered the 200 yards separation by the time I realized what was happening. Manifesto ends.

The tapes, which I have searched for, are real _except_ for the ones where he's actually in the bears mouth & maybe shortly before. The tapes we hear are an amzing reproduction. You cannot find the real audio. Poor Amy. She tried so hard and I think she just froze afterwards. When he told her to run, she should have but she didn't. Foolish woman. So, before he got earen, Timothy moved his tent right on a bear trek that he wasn't familiar with. He should've known better. Any was _TERRIFIED_ of bears and Timothy knew this. Still, she flew in to spend as much time as she could with Timothy as otherwise, she wouldn't see him. He would rather be with the bears than her. His ego was all Timothy cared about. The bear that got him was not one of the bears he "knew" per se'. It was one he stayed away from. A large, grumpy alpha bear and this nut was on his trail

There used to be a reenactment of the 6 minutes on here. It seems they have taken them all down now. I listened to it and it sounds EXACTLY like Timothy. He has a very unique voice and whomever was playing him in the reenactment video did great. Its almost hard to believe it was just a reenactment. Some believed it was the real one that had gotten leaked. His executor of his estate says she keeps the video in a bank vault, but its entirely possible she was offered a few hundred thousand for the tape and took the money. ALL of the comments under the video were talking shit about Timothy, so maybe they took it down due to so many ppl mocking a man under a video of a man being eaten alive. He didnt carry a gun or even bear spray, so he screams to the girlfriend, who was also eaten later, to get the frying pan and hit the bear with it. The bear gave zero Fs about a small woman hitting it with a small pan. He told Letterman he doesnt carry a weapon and would never want a bear to be hurt or killed even if it killed him. But when it went down? Oh he wanted a weapon then! Its crazy he lasted 13 summers walking right up to these bears trying to pet them like a golden retriever...he had a severe untreated mental illness besides that he was a meth addict in recovery, but when you see the documentary? I do not think he was sober at all.

He got the message to millions, (before social media existed), that bears are intelligent, they feel, & they deserve to be here. At the time bears were being killed by trophy hunters, & displayed as a rugs or statues. The man followed his passion, saved alot of bears, & died doing it, ill advised or not, Timothy deserves respect for preventing numerous bears from being senselessly hunted as trophies. Two bears were shot as a result of him & her going to that bear area when bears were looking for more food before hibernation. He interfered with their wild behaviour and put bears at risk. It seems he got increasingly irrational and paranoid - seems likely a mental illness.

This is a more accurate way to describe it…. Timothy was completely self absorbed. He put himself and an innocent woman in a spot that that would guarantee interaction with grizzlies at the most dangerous time, right before hibernation. He and his lady friend were eaten by this bear. And even tho he claims he would do anything to protect them, he was the reason this grizzly was ultimately put down. I heard he knew several bears from a certain group, and they all had started to hibernate. Then the weather was not cooperating for a new group of larger bears who did not get their fill of food due to late in the season, the new ones found Timothy and his galpal. They didn't know him. So they had no indication that he was taboo. So sad for these 2!

I've heard most of that audio. His girlfriend had plenty time to get away while he was being eaten alive. But she stayed right there the whole time hitting the bear with a frying pan. You could hear Amy say "oh my god" which I think was when the bear finally ripped him apart. Tim repeatedly yelled at her to run, but she didn't. They stayed too close to hibernation time I think.

If you live near foxes, determined predators that will kill for fun, but chase off the friendly ones while encouraging, feeding and befriending the friendly ones, within 20 generations they will have a different breeding cycle and floppy ears. This has been done. With apex predators it would take longer, but even a tiger can be turned into a kitty by generations of selecting for desirable traits. Humans are in the process of weeding out heartless, tricky individuals and discarding them, in a process that takes centuries.
