@@nigelvardy Hi Nigel. I just became aware of this adventure and am completely amazed that you, Antony and Steve survived. It would be a dream for me to be able to meet or talk with each one of you. How can I achieve that wish? Should I contact Steve at his business? Do you think he would be open to having a chat? I live in the U.S. You all are uniquely incredible.
A lovely comment and thank you for celebrating them. They risked their lives to save us. One of the rescue teams emailed me the other day to say hello..!
I don't think putting yourself in that kind of danger is being right in the head. It's their lives. They aren't mean to small animals. But I would sign papers to have them committed were they my friends/family.
@@howardstrauss5166 that was rude? Haven't you ever heard of adventure? I'm so confused they had all the proper equipment and did it responsibly!! Not like they ran up there in shorts geez u make it sound like they are crazy
And now, RU-vid randomly recommended this video to me! I feel special, like it...was just MY time to see this video. Very interesting, very SCARY, and very happy you made it out. I am proud of you as a human being, from one to another.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!13 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Alstro Else indeed it is. When you don't take chances, you don't get rewards. Like with anything else in life, there are always risks. You can't spend your life scared and hiding or you haven't lived at all.
I remember I was a little girl, I learned to read maybe 2 years before and I watched this on T.V. subbed (I do not live in an English speaking country), I literally cried with silent tears. These men were on my mind ever since and I am 23 now. I wish I could tell them that I am sorry they had to go through this, and I wish I could tell them how grateful I am that they shared their story, giving me strength many, many times. I wish them a happy life.
The close up off those dead blackened fingers while he's saying "Maybe I won't be able to climb as extreme as I have been in the past" was brutal. So completely incongruent.
@@Mimi89_7 It's necrosis due to frostbite. All black parts are dead tissue and will eventually fall off. (BUT: I have the impression that these pictures here were staged and that these two were just actors with painted fingers.)
@@singenstattatmen5096 No. I did't watch the entire video. But the left dude has a smear on his cheek that looks kinda weird, like smeared paint. Anyways, this stuff does happen. So even if it didn't happen to these two people, it happened to someone. In this sense, I don't feel betrayed by the video or anything.
@@TLK22 Yes, double amputee Mark Inglis had to have more amputation after his summit of Mount Everest. Just days ago I watched a video where he showed he had frostbite on his stumps. He also injuired his one amputated leg/stump so had to have more of it amputated. I guess on the bright side he broke his prosthetics and not his (lower) leg. Speaking as a person that survived frostbite without amputation so not worth.
I don't know why this came through the algorithm this afternoon for me to watch, but I did and am just amazed at such a will to live. I'm glad you all survived to keep answering all these years later! You're all amazing men, and to think I complain when it snows an inch? How dare I when it's nothing like what you all went through. I hope you all were able to climb again! 💙
Some say hell is warm and burns everything. But these guys found themselves in a hell of ice and snow. I'm pleased to hear you guys got out of no-man's-land!
i watching and Y'all tell your story i was so scared and. Hurting. For all you guys just knowing Y'all in so mutch pain ,alone and so. Cold. Did anyone. Call for help from GOD?? I no it was GOD who sent Y'all help no one else was there to hear y"all. All three 3 of you men are BLESS .to be alive ( this is a great testimony. For us all .) thank you all.
I have a 3rd cousin somewhere on that mountian. He was training for Everest and all we know is that his group never checked back in. It was 1987 or so. His name was Steve.
@@keirfarnum6811 @Kay Bowers Their spirits are together, forever doing what they loved. I’m sure they are so happy to know you are keeping them in your minds, most likely making a new connection with each other on the otherside now that you two have come across each other here!
thank you algorithm! sometimes life puts you into certain situations where u have to dig deep & just power through the situation. Quitting isn’t an option. what a bunch of legends. I just wanted to send some love ur way from Ontario Canada❤🇨🇦
Or just cannot learn properly. Don't like this kind of idiocy, if they're happy to die painfully... why not rescue captured children, and do something worthy. This is senseless
It's amazing how it's naturally programmed in ours body and mind to not give up , I'm a great swimmer but I can't really float I almost drowned both my arms where hurting as hell and then my body and mind say no today you will survive
You are an inspiration, hero, legend and wonderful man Mr Vardy. It is a pleasure to read your replies and to read and hear about your incredible journey. If everyone in the world just had ONE friend like any of you three fine blokes...I think the world would be a much much better place. I hope you are doing well and I wish you all the best. From a very awe inspired person in Ireland.
I cannot imagine the pain they must be in with those injuries.I got very minor frost bite on my fingers from getting things out of the industrial freezer at work and I was only in there for 10 minutes. My fingers turned dark and I lost a little skin a few days later,it to date was the worst pain I've ever experienced. The sheer amount of pain killers they must be on to not be screaming must be enough to put down a horse.
@@nigelvardy Nowadays they don’t want to give pain meds for anything; they’re too worried about addiction, even though only 0.6% are susceptible. It’s madness.
@@keirfarnum6811 tell me about it my whole body is full of arthritis and osteoporosis and my hip joint pops in an out with an awful impingement!! And so many other things an my Dr has me on vicodin dude vicodin lol like it will kill them to give someone something that helps alot more like percocet! Knowing I'll have to take them for long term shouldn't even be an issue but thanks to the government were all screwed
@@Jesussavedme that's awful. It really sucks when the people that genuinely need the pain meds are refused because the doctors are told not to prescribe. This is why so many people turn to the streets and end up on heroin or now fentanyl, carfentanyl, norfentanyl. I hate seeing anybody in pain.
@@jeanettecook1088 steve said he laid on the ground for 28 hours before his rescue. if you can lay there that long in the cold and not die, i’d say you’re a walking miracle.
I can't believe you made it out alive. Take care guys! I love to watch mountain videos from under a blanket in my sofa. 😺 (I can not stand cold weather even though I'm born in northern Sweden.)
@@nigelvardy Great! It makes me happy to know that you are able to still enjoy outdoor living. I have to confess I actually live in the middle of Sweden, in Ångermanland or Västernorrland. To everyone though it counts as part of nortern Sweden. Or summers are basically between June-August, a short autumn and spring, rest is a winter period of ca five month. Still it's nothing compared to living in real nortern Sweden where you have been. 😺 I've been as north as Gällivare myself visiting a friend during springtime. I love the light up north, during the non-winter period. Consider the cold I think I lack every "cold genes" one can have. I have been freezing all my life. 😺
I love that, in spite of all the hardship, they're all so passionate about mountain climbing that they're able to appreciate the beauty of the mountains even while they're suffering severe frostbite. It's an admirable amount of love for what you do!
@@deads4 oh yes if theres true necrosis the only cure is amputation - removal of the dead and poisonous tissue- otherwise is death by sepsis or "blood poisoning "
@@nigelvardy hi Nigel! RU-vid suggested this video to me strangely and I’m not a mountaineer I use an electric wheelchair a bit hard to get up mountains or through gravel tbh. Joking aside it’s great how you’ve adapted after this horror so respect! , I saw Steve’s injuries and I wondered how he’s doing now I hope he’s having a great life in the lakes kind regards joanna from York uk
Gotta give it up for The Park Services Search and Rescue. They put their life's on the line everytime they go out. I've read that incredible stories of bravery rescuing lost, injured and trapped climbers from all over the world.
@@buddybbuddyb3687 sure doesn't seem right does it? Risking their own lives and possibly hurting their own family just because 4 guys need an adrenaline rush and a good story to tell. I think it's selfish.
Hey Nigel, I couldn't imagine the pain and fear you three must have felt those days and still to this day. I just want to say that I hope you're living a happy and safe life now. Your selflessness and strength has impacted me enough to write this and that's a rare thing. Well wishes and good health
@@aarondoodles3380 Well, @Nigel Vardy (from the video) actually commented recently, on some of the threads. He said that doctors don't intervene immediately to remove the damaged tissue because, in some cases, the body can actually heal and recover part of it. But once gangrene sets in, they have to operate and remove the necrotic parts. So, they probably didn't fall off, but were amputated some time after... 😬 He said they weren't painful though, didn't feel anything..
@@oliviamartini9700 why is someone an idiot for climbing mountains? Certainly you're the idiot. Bet you don't go much further than your mirror. At least they have an amazing story to tell. You only can tell stories about what hairstyle you made the other day. 😂
My dad was a climber and adventurous when he was young, he is 67 now. He climbed the Everest, Mont blanc etc. I am glad nothing (very bad) happened to him. You guys are real survives. I can't imagine to survive what you went through.
@@rvaugh230 Noodling kills the nest. Flatheads only get in a hole during the spawn to gaurd the eggs and fry until they are big enough to fend for themselves. Thats why most states have banned the practice.
Haha “oh suddenly, that’s a nice view”. Humor gets us through even the darkest of times. Man Steve is an incredible person, risked everything trying to save his mates. I saw this story as a kid and it makes me so happy they’re all alright. Wonder if they ever still climb together?
I'm glad you and your mates made it, Nigel. I salute the team effort you all displayed, keeping each other alive and attempting to reach help. I also recognize the perseverance it takes continuing to stay positive in life after the frostbite damage. It inspires me to try to remain positive in my own life.
i've been falling down a mountaineering disaster rabbit hole for the past couple of days, and this video popped up in the recommended. it's amazing to see someone go through something so intense but still maintain an air of positivity and a good sense of humor about it - you guys are like the british version of beck weathers! hope you guys are doing well these days - best wishes from the united states :)
You only live once, and hardly anyone goes climbing thinking that they'll be stuck in essentially a sink hole over night.. Nor do they expect to get seriously injured. Yeah, it is a risk, but you don't go up thinking that you'll be hurt. I can't understand these people who have so little sympathy for y'all. I hope you're all doing better than you were here, and that you're still having fun (hopefully with fewer injuries)
Wow I am so glad you all survived. I hope all your injuries get better. I am amazed by that love for your lads and will to live. Amazing man and I am sorry that unfortunate situation happened to you guys
Literally having just returned from Norway with work, I cannot begin to imagine the absolute granite resolve of the three of you in horrendous conditions. Makes ice breaking drills look like a Sunday afternoon in front of the fire. Absolute best of British!
Just watched "I Shouldn't Be Alive" for a second time now after 6 year's. It is amazing these 3 men survived. What a story of true grit and perseverance in the face of extreme adversity! Steve, Nigel & Antony are true mountain warrior's!
Amazing story! Dont you love it when YT randomly shows you a video from 13yrs ago you've never seen?! My father in law was a runner and did the 3 peaks challenge here in the UK, his team came first for their age range, 50+! A huge achievement. Bless this man, glad you survived! Worcestershire, UK. 🇬🇧
Very few people can survive things like this, you're all amazingly brave and seeing as you're still doing what you love and climbing you're also very inspiring!
This is absolutely incredible. The view from the helicopter must have been breath taking. I hope you boys get your chance to climb again. It must really be something to know that you have been somewhere that not many other people have been or will ever get a chance to go.
@@nigelvardy Nigel, I did see that you gathered the strength and courage to climb again after this. Incredible. Do you still keep in contact with your friends?
Omg! This story is amazing! The heart these guys had to look after each other when alot of people honestly would save themselves. I hope they recovered and get to climb again. ( I wouldn't be able to go back)
I can't imagine how bad this was. I live in Minnesota and we get -20 to -60 Temps with high wind regularly in the winter, actually was this weather a few weeks back. I can't fathom adding in the altitude, gear, and physicality involved in climbing on top of it. You guys are total badasses.
Here before 700,000 views, this vid is definitely gonna be put in the algorithm multiple more times and get past 1M soon enough so I thought I’d claim my “before 1 million views” Also, bro, good on you for being active but this is a level of thrill seeking that I will never be able to fully understand the attraction to.
"...and those that couldn't hear the music of the sirens luring them to their deaths lived full and happy lives, while the others danced their noses and fingers off one by one, or were found centuries later with a frozen grimace on their faces, their pathetic expressions reflecting their final moments of deep regret."
@Dan Didnot I remember speaking with Sir Ran and comparing frostbite treatment and injuries when I was recovering Dan. I chose surgery, he chose a hacksaw..! We've worked together since and alway joke about our injuries...
I'm not sure why the algorithm brought me here, but I stayed for the whole story. What a story and experience you and your pals had. Happy that you made it through to the other side. The determination at this point for all of you to climb again is fantastic. Hope that you are all doing well and recovered well.
Just now getting recommended this video, it was amazing. Were you able to try climbing again? The fact that all 3 of you nearly died and at the end of the video still wanted to climb again was inspiring.
You have the prettiest hair💖 Reminds me of someone in a progressive rock/metal band. Thank you for still staying active with awareness, and for not allowing this ordeal to stop you from doing what you love. xx
I take it your not British, as many of us Brits have Viking ancestors from the invasions. We are all pretty much the same northern Europeans anyway! I take it your American as your racially obsessed.
