Don’t Fear the Reaper in BJJ (Protect Your Knee & Avoid DQ in IBJJF)

I've had a lot of request regarding the reap situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. Whether it's to avoid being called for reaping if you use Single Leg X or if you want to defend against someone reaping your leg.
In this video I show some basics on keeping your knee safe, defending the reap and avoiding allowing your position to get you in trouble in an IBJJF BJJ tournament.
I also touch on how the reap wasn't always a thing with a quick "Back in the day" story from Old Man Chew.
But seriously it wasn't. As a White and Blue Belt I never heard of being called for reaping. However we would get called for Can Openers and Neck Cranks. Wrestlers used them all the time and they got banned. And the refs would call them super quick. And I feel like the reap position is similar. It's not that hard to defend but since we've defined it as "bad" we stop using it, many newer students don't know how to defend it and it probably won't be a thing in a few years as education grows.
Hope the video is useful to you. Thanks for watching.

This video is super helpful. I'm a white belt (2 weeks in), but I used to wrestle with my friends a LOT. It was kind of our favorite thing to do (two of them did actual trained wrestling so we had to learn to defend against them). I have no bjj background or anything though. Anyway, I finish my "all belts class" where we focused on the turtle position, but the advanced "green belts and above" class starts. I had been practicing with brown belt and he asks if I want to spar. The head coach says it's ok as long as I only spar with purple belts and above. So we spar and I end up faking one way (he's in full guard) and then going the other and catch him in a leg lock. He then tells me that I'm reaping. I don't know what that means, but he seems kind of upset by it. He kind of explains it, but this video helped me a lot. He was definitely taking it easy on me, but I think he was upset because I did it. We talked after and everything is cool, but I wanted clarification and I appreciate your instruction.

that’s weird for grapplers industries. Ref probably forgot he wasn’t at an IBJJF style tournament because they allow reaping unless it was white belt (not sure what’s allowed for white belts and beginners nogi ) and even so they are pretty lenient about the position. edit: also damn near impossible to reap in 5050 unless you move to game over position
@insidetrip101

@@hotkarate593 Yeah, sounds odd for grappling industries. However, I'm pretty sure at all belts reaping is disallowed in the gi, but I might be wrong about that. However, I'm pretty sure you can't reap in beginner no gi as well. Not sure if You can do it in intermediate though.

I thought I would come back to reference this after seeing some really shitty DQ's at this years Pans 😂. Even if there was no control of the hip AT ALL when there was a bite on the ankle therefore no pressure on the knee, instant DQ. Seems like IBJJF are beyond keen to DQ for that single leg x, more so than any other organisation and should probably learn breaking mechanics and their own rules. My biggest pet peeve though is when people milk it when theyve been "reaped". F*ck off with that sh*t. With that in mind I quite often as soon as we enter cross ashi territory, underhook the near side leg and attack the far leg with a straight ankle which from my understanding is perfectly legal but would still get me DQ'd 😅😅

Hi Chewy. Thank you for your awesome videos. I have been watching them for over a year, but only just started training BJJ. What are you recommendations on headgear / ear guards? I'm a smaller guy, and most of the time I have no problems. I have a small problem when rolling with bigger guys that can really put the pressure on with triangles and headlocks. My ears get hurt for the next 2 weeks. I have tried cliff keen ear guards but the the front strap always gets ends up in my face, and the strap under the jaw is quite painful. Its there a better headgear option out there, or should I just give up on the ear guards and change my BJJ game instead?
@evolvep2747
@evolvep2747 3 года назад
you don't need better head gear, you need better rolling partners, that don't try to hurt you.
@joshandpaulie
@joshandpaulie 2 года назад
If you can't get an arm in to make space before pulling your head out then just tap. I used to yank my head out of triangles and fucked my right ear up really quick, once I stopped trying to yank my head without space it healed up. Now it's only a problem if I get kicked or kneed in my ear on accident, which is pretty uncommon.

hey chewy - great vid. I have a question about back control. I am about 5'8" and 150, and a fellow blue belt whom I roll with a a lot is 6'3" 210 lbs, and whenever I get the back control, he is just so big that he flattens me out and I can't get hooks or body lock. I feel like this is weird because bjj is about smaller people beating bigger, and the back is supposed to be the strongest position, so how come I am having trouble holding this guy in my back mount?

Ibjjf is a disgrace how they handle some dq's. They're the ones that have the power to put an end to that kind of bullshit. They're all for it as far as I'm concerned.

im pretty sure ibjjf changed the rules on this one. there is no more a dq if you reap without attacking the leg (single leg x) --> also no dq if you are the standing guy and push the foot down. only a warning for that und the ref reset the single leg x (there was a miayo match where this happend and the first time it caught my attention). makes a lot of sense i think, because you can slip by accident with your foot into reaping and dont want to be dq for that after paying so much money. in ashi its the same. dq for reaping if attacking the foot. witch makes perfectly sence, since you would turn belly down, not into your opponent, cause you cant heel hook.
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 4 года назад
I hear what you're saying about the rules. But they're not always followed to the T. I've had a student DQ'd for a person moving his leg in the position and I've seen it happen to others. I've always watched people get warnings. They're not very consistent about the situation.

My apologies for commenting from far outside the cult of ju, but this pickyness about trivia is why I will never consider bjj for self defense. For sport, sure why not if you have the time. But I would want to know how to do what works when someone might want to kill me. There is no tap out on the streets, no fairness or "feelings" only life or death. Where do I find a grappling school that embraces this?
