We might find ourselves in a condition where we know that we have taken the best decision for ourselves and our loved ones. But then a conflict gets started in our mind, what if the decision that we have taken leads us to an even deeper problem.
One destitute Brahmin in Sravasti was also going through this conflict in his mind, while he was listening to the sermon of Buddha. The story of Brahmin Cūḷa Ekasāṭaka or little one robe tells us about the significance of not holding back once we have taken the decision and how restraining our good actions impacts the result of our efforts.
During the time of Buddha, there was a Brahmin named Cula Ekasataka or Little One Robe, who was extremely poor. He was called so because he and his wife together possessed only one single outer garment. As the result, only one of them could go outside at a time. Both of them were very devoted to Buddha.
One day they heard the announcement that Buddha was in the city and there will be a sermon of Buddha at the Jetavana monastery. The couple decided that wife would go to the Jetavana monastery during the day to listen to Buddha and the husband will attend the sermon at night.
His wife put on the robe and left for the sermon, while the Brahmin waited for her to return and stayed at home.
At night while listening to the sermon of Buddha a desire arose within him to gift something to Buddha. But he did not have anything with him except for the outer robe. He decided that he will donate his robe to Buddha.

This one is marvellous and relatable for me. Whenever there is a lecture going on and a doubt occurs, an internal conflict arises about how the crowd or the lecturer may react if my doubt was silly. This conflict diverts my concentration as the result of which I couldn't pay attention to the rest of the lecture. Had I gained courage and asked my doubts without caring about the consequences, I would've been able to understand the lectures properly. However I still couldn't conquer this problem...I hope I could gain enough courage to do so in the future hopefully 😅

Those who delights in Evil, will delight in Evil irrespective of being slow or fast. But those who delights in Good will normally do it faster.... (at the most, they will learn faster too) 🙏🙏

Gifting something to the Buddha is thousand time powerful than gifting something to a Brahmin. Because, Buddha's are very rare. They appear very rarely in the world. The knowledge they possess is outstanding.

Just today I came across your channel. It's beautiful, blessed and educating. Yes, citing the original source materials is a must. Thankyou. Well, if I could I'd suggest if the narratives could be done in more or less simple worded, layman's parlance by as much avoiding or replacing big words, like execution of inner desire.., strategically located offerings..., etc. Actually, this 'big-worded, official jargon sentences in a humble village story-telling' trend is found everywhere in the Indian speakers of English language as they mostly learn it from the newspapers, the textbooks, official journals, etc. perhaps, unlike the native English speakers who grow up learning the commonest, the simplest, the most ordinary but effective ways of expressing, saying, teaching even the much complex of situations. Also, OFFERING to the Buddha... instead of DONATING to the Buddha goes well, here i guess.

As per the book “Parallels to the Dhammapada Verses in the Pāḷi Canon and in other MIA Languages” by Ānandajoti Bhikkhu (link: www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/Buddhist-Texts/K2-Dhammapada-Parallels/Dhammapada-Parallels.pdf) there are no parallels for Verse 116 in the Canon. 🙏

Because of your this preaching that giving gifts to guru gives you wealth, fame & power, people have been using it as a scale to measure your GURU 's authenticity & the merit of devotees devotion. Nowadays if you say anyone that my Guru appeared to me & changed my life gave me knowledge they start scrutinizing it in terms of your increase in wealth, health, fame & power. They don't want your knowledge of Truth but your degree of physical or earthly prosperity not your mental prosperity of peace and joy. Procastination doesn't affect when you are with the GURU as meritorious as Buddha. Finally fulfiling your desire to gift your GURU your only possession without worrying about it consequences gives you sharanagati to your GURU & this unifies you to the GURU, his powers, natural law, peace & joy & knowledge of Truth! You think these things are not worthy as being rewarded with 4 villages, 32 pairs of expensive robes, 4000 gold coins & a pair of expensive blankets & servants?? 🤔😞

Thanks for the question. One of the most beautiful and effective things about the teachings of Buddha is that many times he preached through parables and everyday events in his life. The given verse talks about evil and wickedness and how one should restrain the mind from doing evil. The central point of discussion is not what you give rather it talks about doing your work wholeheartedly, with keenness and without second-guesses and doubts. The story tells that the consequences of doing something with keenness and doing it wholeheartedly will have very different consequences than doing something with doubt in mind. Before getting more into Verse 116, let me also talk about Verse 122, which talks about why doing good deeds should not be taken lightly or why offering alms to Buddha or his monks should not be taken very lightly. Even the low-value offerings made by treasurer Catfoot or Bilalapadaka (Dhammapada Verse 122) were magnified because it was offered to Buddha and the Sangha. Giving something to Buddha or great monks/ people is very powerful. They are not concentred on the item that you gift to them but rather on your spiritual upliftment. For e.g. the robe offered by the Brahmin must have been of very poor quality and worn out (we can safely infer that because he was very poor and the couple was using the robe every day), but the idea is not what is gifted rather it is about our spiritual upliftment and consequences of the act of offering on us. You are true that this cannot be said about offerings made to anyone who is not worthy of the offerings, in that case perhaps you might not get any result whatsoever, either positive or negative. Again when Buddha talked about the Gift of Sixteen or Gift of Eight, he was not talking about the arithmetic/geometric progression of the result of gifts. This verse and story has very practical application to our spiritual practices and can be applied in our everyday life. This story is about doing something with complete devotion and commitment rather than merely addressing the question of giving and getting. For e.g., the meditation and practice of mindfulness should be done wholeheartedly. If we have doubts about the effectiveness of meditation and we keep on second-guessing if meditation is an effective practice or not, we might not get the same kind of result that we can get when we are free from these doubts and concentrate with a complete focus on liberation. Lastly, even if we have a Guru like Buddha we need to walk on the path by ourselves (Dhammapada Verse 276, Video link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3PNhK-Wk3fM.html).

@@BodhisattvaTravels ji, Thank you! Kindly make videos of parables explained or of decoded metaphors, so that I may share it with my family and friends. I am unable to share this video since am still like that poor protagonist even after giving my too little best of offering to the guru. So you know how they will laugh & mock . I beg your pardon for being rude! ❤️🙏🙏❤️🌹🌹

Do mahayana Buddhist also worship deities ?

I think venerate is a better word than worship. Some do and some dont. One thing is for sure: worshipping/venerating deities is not necessary to receive the benefits of the dharma.
