Q&A with the Coach
If you’re a martial artist who knows how to fight, should you advertise that fact to any aggressive would-be attackers as a potential deterrent? Or would that just make them want to snack you around even more?

One of my favorite "fighting without fighting" moments was in Brixton, early 90s. An extremely aggressive dude, harassing a shop owner with whom i was on first name terms with. Simply addressing the pair of them with confidence to remain very calm and unaggressive really diffused the situation almost immediately. i don;t doubt some luck was involved. But if you have ever seen the brilliant Derren Brown, an extremely talented performer and psychologist, he had one amazing tip for avoiding fights with aggressive people. "My hedge isn't four foot tall." Apparently he said that to a guy who was intent on giving him some grief, and the would be assailant, in his adrenaline fuddled mind, took up so much processing power to try and decode this nonsense that he completely forgot he was angry in the first place.

I think it's a good point - most people who end up finding trouble are also people who knowingly go looking for it, in some manner or to some degree. This is also the problem with a lot of people who pursue martial arts in the name of "self defense" - they let on that they only want to "look after themselves" when what they really want to do is "win" the encounters that they secretly want to get into, whether they acknowledge that to anyone, even themselves, or not. Far from wanting to "avoid a confrontation", these are people who are just looking for fights that they can win with the benefit of enhanced skills; they're really passive-aggressive bullies looking for some kind of revenge or thrill, but it's something that is seldom talked about. And, for what it's worth, I never thought that Ramsey's honestly broadcast-quality voice was ever fake... but whether Ramsey is sometimes in love with the sound of his own voice is a different issue. Either way, it IS a great voice, no question... and I think he's a good guy.

Police athletic leagues teach inner city kids boxing to help get the kids new friends, personal discipline, positive role models and mostly to get them OFF the streets that they'll never be able to "outfight" no matter how much boxing they learn. Some people DO legitimately learn martial arts for self defense while sincerely hoping that they'll never have to use them - many more learn them hoping to now win the fights that they previously lost. Real fighting skill is an ego enhancer, and some people let it get the best of them.
@HeartlessKnave
@HeartlessKnave Год назад
Yes but proper training with real contact sparring and proper high pressure scenario drills beats that mentality out of them, usually. Also many get into self defense AFTER having been the victim of a violent crime, so end up having "something to prove". So get into such scenarios because the first one went so badly. Similarly it can be because of childhood abuse and needing to protect themselves but they also didn't learn behavioral control to express their emotions healthily, and learned behaviors which cause them to be confrontational and to respond with violence when they don't know what else to do or just enjoy it (as you said even if they can't admit it to themselves) due to desensitization & conditioning towards doing it. To a degree most men are like this, especially when young. We are all just monkeys that really want to fling some shit, especially when in conflict.

I liked the story about your manager. It reminds me of an experience I had in a parking lot where a guy was zipping through way too fast and I was backing out of my space not looking around as well as I should have. Fortunately, I cought him out of the corner of my eye and slammed on my breaks, and he wizzed past without the vehicles touching. It was a bit jarring. I pulled back into the space and got out of my car and he parked and was coming over somewhat aggressively, and while he was some distance away I called to him asking (quite sincerely) if he was OK. Man did he look confused. He said something angrily about how I should look more carefully where I was going, but his heart wasn't in it anymore, and he just accepted my apology and walked off. (I indeed should have been more careful as I backed out, so it was true. I had a feeling that he knew he was going too fast for a parking lot and so it didn't need saying, so I didn't say it.) It's interesting how hard it is for people to be mad at someone who expresses concern over how they're doing.

No you never tell no one, how skilled you are, period. The reason being is that it could serve to escalate into a fight. You try to talk someone down if you're sure that you could seriously hurt them. You try to reason with them, unless you have no choice but to fight. The way of martial arts is not to prove how tough and skillful you are, it is to use when you have to use it. Sparring is good because it builds skill. Some use it as a way to exert power over another and that's usually the one who engages in cockiness.
@basteagui

you're completely right. in my experience the fighters who use it like that are not super skilled, proud of their punching power, and unaware of their duning kruger bias. a more experienced fighter sees no sparring benefit to destroying a newb in a fight. its like playing chess with a toddler. they also are aware of the real depths of the martial arts more and they know that there's always someone scarier out there. that rule is forever. i only welcome a fight if someone REAALLY comes looking for it.

My warning is more to gauge if I need to use lethal force against them, or its just an ego contest. This is a really good question that no one with any sort of experience with illegal violence would ever ask. If you can get out of a fight by telling someone that you know martial arts then you could have most likely also gotten out of there with a wide variety of much safer and more pleasant conversational topics! As the shit draws closer to the fan everyone wants to make them selves look dangerous. Some people are really good at this, and they primarily use body language to convey their scaryness. Sometimes also sounds, but rarely more than two or three actual words. Anything more than three consecutive words is a conversation. That's the direct opposite of an illegal fight, and shows that you really don't want this fight. This is not a deterrant in any way shape or form. If you even mention martial arts i will see this as more or less of a guarantee that you haven't been in an illegal, or really intense fight before and will be easy to just shock and overwhelm. This might not be true, but it is what you are going to make me believe.

Trough training martial arts and calisthenics plus being a nurse by profession, working whit kids has given me a lot of empathy and understading towards people. Also training has increased my confidence. I used to be afraid of being infront of people and now I am a volunteer coach for my Karate clunbs youth and children groubs. And to my suprise I have found I like teaching very much. I have also worked whit mentally ill people and working whit them forced me to face a lot of comments and agressiom I had to learn to answer profesionally whitout showing anger even if something trigerred my past traumas. I so believe that my experience of being bullied has in the end made me more empathic person. But coming where I am today has been a long journey. What comes to de-escalating a situation I would be very cautios of mentioning my training becuase it migth escalate the situation. As a de-escalation I would try to calmy speak whit the person. Resorting to my training only if I have to respond to physical attack. Another reason to keep the training to yourself is that if you tell an agressor you know karate or kun-fu or whatever you also give them information they can use against you. This is not a wise course of action because you don't know what kind of training the agressor migth have. As a default I would always asume some level of competence from an agressor.

I've had a couple of instances where I could diffuse the situation by non-verbally indicating that I didn't have a problem with a fight. I.e. once I was coming back from kickboxing training and at the metro station, there was this aggressive guy making lots of noise approaching people challenging them to fight. Kind of shouting stuff like "Wanna fight? I'm gonna beat you up! Pussy!". People would move away as soon as they saw him coming. Usually, I would also just go away when I see trouble coming up, but somehow my ego didn't want to do that (probably was still in a fighting mood from training before), so I took my mouthguard out of my gym back and bladed my body off. And when he was about to come to me, the moment he saw me, he got slower in his walk, eyed me up, then mumbled to himself "Nah, not that one, he's a good guy.", turned around and went away. But usually, I don't show that I want a fight. If I can't avoid aggressive people (i.e. sitting in a metro wagon, doors closed) and they approach me, I give them a look showing that I'm fully aware of the situation, but I neither show that I'm intimidated (=not a victim which might kick off their predatory instincs) nor do I challenge them (=escalating ego battle). Showing zero emotions confuses them as they can't read what I would do in case they'd escalate further, so so far, it worked and they left me alone.

From my experience, people didn’t need to be told I was trained, they knew, if you’re trained, your aura speaks, even pissing you off in the slightest scares people. I empathize with the bullying aspect of this video, I’m the same way, I was abused everywhere I went, from being called dusty for my shoes, to having my head stuck in a toilet, to having desks thrown at me, to people harassing my girlfriends, to calling my mom a clown, and I had no one to back me up. It was the reason I took up martial arts, but I grew up with a lot of rage from all the bullying, I made animations and music to provide an outlet, and when people make fun of me for it, it triggers my trauma of that kid coming home and curling up in a bed crying because he had no one there to understand what happened to him in school. I deal with aggressive people from time to time, I remain calm and still try to be polite, but after a certain point, the psychotic in me comes out.

I've learned a ton from Ramsey and really enjoy listening to him. Big fan of his voice as well! I'm going to disagree with him on his thoughts on whether or not you should advertise your martial arts ability. When I was first learning Judo a fellow student who finished runner up at Nationals, was on the grappling level of at least a BJJ brown, and was a bb in a full contact Karate as well, told me a story of how over a parking dispute a guy wanted to fight him. He calmly told the guy his experience and the guy got in his car and left. I never forgot this and used it twice. Once was at a bar when a guy was starting crap...I calmly told I've been training MMA over ten years and asked him if I was really the guy he wanted to mess with. He sat back down with his tail between his legs. Once at a party a drunk guy was bothering people and came over to me. I told him why things weren't going to end well for him. He made a face saving comment like "ohh you're going to kick my ass" but then he mellowed out after that. I can definitely see how it could backfire if someone is being aggressive and hopped up on liquid courage but I think a large percentage of the population will think better of picking a fight with someone who knows how to fight.

Remember my first fight in first grade. Came home crying everyday for a month from the nice American child bullies. Had a crew cut and never heard the end of it until my grandpa was there when I came home crying. He said “Sup?” I said kids making fun of my short hair. He says “Whaaaat? You come home crying again and I’ll beat your ass, handle your business boy” or something like that. Soon as I show up next morning, right off the bat, someone started in. I’ll never forget that crisp fall sunny morning, 20 feet inside the playground entrance, bully laying spread eagle at my feet, head turned to the right because I hit him with a right. Everybody on the playground quiet, looking at me, looking at him in surprise. Felt gooood not crying that day. Listened to everything my grandpa told me after that. Stand up for yourself, even if you get your ass kicked, feels better than the alternative

During a confrontation the body language is more important than your actual words. Someone who comes across as calm and confident can be more intimidating than someone who just talks shit. Pointing out your martial skills just puts a 'kick me' sign on your back, while firmly telling someone to back off will probably do the opposite (results may vary, depending on body type, number of people involved on both sides as well as general circumstances)

Some people just dont know what's right in front of them...Personally I love a voice with character and some voice actors and speakers get paid a LOT for having the vocal tone that you have. I work in the audio industry and an agency can pull in a lot of work from a voice like yours, they're not common and it's not something you can imitate or force with technology (before deepfaking anyway and that's still not trivial). You are really good at keeping a flow going too and thinking on your feet. I properly appreciate your contributions to the knowledge pool but that includes the clear cut and well articulated way you explain these things.

Well, I can testify - I did that a few times when I was a teen - in a real situation of aggression it makes people laugh at you and challenge you immediately; in a normal day-to-day talk, when you build that aura around yourself, it makes them muster their courage (or annoyance ?) for weeks or months and then - challenge you. Come to think of it, short of directly insulting or attacking someone, I believe there is no better generator of hostility than informing them that you can fight.

Absolutely no bully from my past would last more than two seconds against me now. I still have a lot of deep seated rage about them as well. It kinda never leaves you. And if I met one, on the off chance, they would find I am a normal person who would gladly give them the time of day. At least I hope so. Life is a very long journey. I have no desire to double back toward the start.

So much of the time, in any altercation, its all about perceiving the mental state of a person, as well as how dangerous they are/size/strength/conditioning, etc. And also if they are on drugs, because unfortunately, some folks on drugs will literally KILL for a few bucks and will be nearly oblivious to pain... Someone who is quite drunk is not an issue... Someone who is a heroin addict is a MAJOR, MAJOR issue. That fight will be VERY, VERY DANGEROUS... Someone who is sober and in good shape, trained in fighting, esp. if they are bigger/stronger than you will be quite dangerous in a fight with you, yes indeed... Someone who is a beginner or has some experience in martial arts, or they have a black belt from a McDojo, etc.-not so dangerous. Probably best in some cases to let them show their stuff to you, as they are probably itching to use what they have learned, and just focus on the martial arts themselves and complement when they execute some move very well. In most cases, they are not going to be a real threat. Come on now... So much of the time, it is about conditioning, anticipating movements in another person, weight classes, and doing what works BEST for a person. Personally, if I got an elbow strike in someone's face, MAN, game over. Of course, if I was at fault, I'd be going to jail, sure. 😬😬😬😬 So I'm not planning on instigating anything... 😁😁😁😁 Maybe against Putin... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

I was approached by a group of teenagers in a silver car about a week ago. I was on my way to my Muay Thai class and they began to shout out at me from the window. They told me that I was "built like a female" and that look like a bitch. I pretended that I didn't hear that but then they noticed that I train in a combat sport because of my Muay Thai shorts and training bag. They were like, "do you box?" and I just told them no and that I was just wearing swim trunks. They were still questioning me so I just told them I that I don't want any trouble and to have a nice day. They looked confused and drove off after that. Even though I've trained in multiple disciplines besides Muay Thai, I'm not going to attempt fighting off a group of guys. Things could have gone the other way but I succeeded in avoiding danger.

The law of attraction works both ways. The irony of learning martial arts is that as you cultivate virtue and become more self aware through your training, the dark world that pushed you towards "self defense" begins to become clearer. Our perception of the world changes as we change. If there was something to be taken from TCMA, let it be lessons like this.

My personal and perhaps less popular opinion is that the only thing that might impress an agressive individual , is to deal him higher volume of damage than the what he dealt to you. Important note: no one has to fight, for every disagreement there is a way to speak out off, and if an idiot wants to fight it wouldn't matter if there is a conversation at all. Like Ramsey always say "get out there and train", because you get benefits both from being a peaceful worrior who never drew a sword, or being a peaceful worrior that always used his sword.

Thanks, tough Love. No it's not necessary to let everyone know that you practice fighting. I think it's great!to be able to share your Art with people who are part of friendship circle. But you gotta ask your ego.. 'Why?' if it's a because of fear, it's a bad strategy. If it's in order to put yourself on a pedestal, pride? maybe that's not real confidence, you know... When i learned martial arts the main key point my trainer told me for general reasons is:.. that the power gained from practice is to serve character building. Gaining self-confidence. And true confidence does not need to prove its self. However you do want to know. . .your truth

Don't ever and I mean NEVER advertise your martial arts background to an aggressive or hostile individual during a confrontation. If anything they will only be more willing to attack you. It's better to just either walk away or if you have to defend yourself do so in a manner that inflicts as much pain and damage to your attacker as possible.

If you are lucky on the street, you could still become unlucky in the court, because judges are often of the impression that you as a martial artist could have been "softer" to the aggressor and still won. So they may charge you too.
