Quiet quitting is good for the short term while you devise an exit plan, but if you are quiet quitting for a prolonged period, it will, result in burnout and other health issues ….not worth it
@KelThaFunkeeGaming
@KelThaFunkeeGaming 2 года назад
Quiet quitting worked for me to help recover my burnout. Literally I ended up setting a much lower bar. I think the difficult part is when stuff starts piling up, you gotta become comfortable with some deadlines being missed. If you're confronted about it just say it was too much for you. I realized two things, A) most people don't know how long it takes you to do a task. B) Your office is understaffed anyway so either they can't get rid of you or literally you are overwhelmed so missing a deadline actually makes sense
@IrisSmyth
@IrisSmyth 2 года назад
I'm glad it helped you to recover from your burnout. I think it's important to set healthy boundaries, and sometimes that means lowering the bar for yourself (especially if you're an over-achiever or perfectionist) or saying no to an unrealistic workload. Hope you're doing well now!

I like the term you coined. A silent sabbatical is something I have been trying to do for months. I started by taking French lessons every day before work - prioritising them during one of my most productive hours and not leaving them for after work when I feel drained and tired. A couple of months ago I also started preparing for a sporting event in the fall and now go to the gym a few nights a week after work. I need to finish work on time to do that and the exercise takes my mind away from my work tasks. I was just promoted but I regularly remind myself that, if I don't set my own boundaries, nobody else will, so I am not trying to impress anyone. I don't see them firing me anyway, since we are understaffed and overworked as it is. I do my best to stay under the radar and avoid missed deadlines so as not to draw attention to myself. So far it has been working and I plan to continue doing it. It has significant benefits for my physical and mental well-being.

"If I don't set my own boundaries, nobody else will" - yes, yes yes!! Such a great realisation! Your putting your own wellbeing first - that really should be applauded! Thanks for sharing, and keep on enjoying your silent sabbatical 😉 Good luck with the sporting event later this year.

Completely agree about the negative aspects of quiet quitting. While I never intentionally decided to quiet quit, my work environment turned toxic, a literal corporate 'Hunger Games' causing droves of people to quit, others laid off, and the rest of us waiting for the other shoe. I've been working remotely full time since the beginning of the pandemic and my personal coping mechanism is to "silently" travel to domestic and nearby international locations to work remotely while pursuing personal interests, in my case, adventure travel, hiking, backpacking, sightseeing and other outdoor activities. I've used all of the ideas you listed in your video to achieve this. It's been great, but it has one big drawback. I never, ever again want to work even a single day in the office, and I become depressed after a short time from returning from my travels. Looking for a new employer that doesn't care where I am at any given moment, so long as I do my work and do it well.
@IrisSmyth

Fortunately we live in a day & age where remote work is a lot more accepted than before. Hope you're well on your way to find an opportunity that meets all your needs!

I think the only things I strongly disagree with is doing work on your lunch breaks or around holidays. That's giving "side hustle" vibes, where there's this expectation that you should always be working on yourself/your hustle every chance you get. I think people should absolutely take their full lunch break and holidays to do absolutely nothing (or whatever relaxes them). Then, when they go back to work, continue working on their side hustle during work hours. At least, as long as there isn't something super urgent that they should be doing at work. This ensures that can get both their job work and "side hustle"/hobby work done, and still have enough time for themselves or their family at the end of the day.
@IrisSmyth
@IrisSmyth 2 года назад
Very fair point Camisha - thanks for sharing! I agree that it's super important to take time to turn off, recharge, relax, do nothing. I think in the end it's about balance and finding what works for yourself. Some people might feel energised by focusing on their personal or professional pursuit during lunch hour, whereas for others that might be time that they really need to switch off and just go outside for a walk. And yes, I agree with you that it's not necessary to work on this pursuit during EVERY lunch hour or EVERY (bank) holiday, or whenever you get a chance. That's not sustainable and probably not very healthy. Thanks for contributing!

I know its semantics, but it shouldn't be called quiet quitting. It makes it seems like people aren't working. They are working. Its just that they are doing the bare minimum to not get fired.

I quiet quit my current job a few years back as a result of absolutely egregious unprofessionalism, I went on an aggressive campaign to replace my job. While I was working, l have developed side hustles with tennis coaching and watch trading which l love - so will be scaling that up once I’ve taken my sabbatical and moving on to the next stage of my life. Being financially free will allow me the option to travel to work between Europe and Asia.

This company started showing similar signs that my old employer did and now I just want out. I've used quiet quitting five years ago. We were working at a small ecomm company and I had made my boss an extra $4mm year over year. None of us got raises, bonuses and in fact, we were told we weren't working hard enough. From that point forward the morale amongst the small group of us just crashed. We just stopped putting in the effort, collected paychecks and spent time looking for an exit hatch. I ended up starting a competing company, quit and took the next five years developing multiple income streams. I do agree with you, however, that quiet quitting doesn't help, but it can if you're actively trying to get out and are filling up a pipeline to get out. Excellent video!

When you’re ‘quiet quitting’ because of burn out, it’s so imperative that you use that silent sabbatical and the extra bandwidth to set yourself up for a new opportunity that’s a better fit (internally or externally. Unfortunately it’s one thing to come into a job and give the standard effort but a different thing after you’ve been giving your all then abruptly back off to the bare minimum. I dread my job but I have started what you're calling "silent sabbatical" for a few years to test out hobbies and whether I can turn them into a business, ultimately I found I love writing and in 2019 started writing a book and published it earlier this year, and next one in a few months will be soon. The crazy thing is when you produce something of value you're open to opportunities and chase them so now I been blogging as well, and soon start freelance content writing and video on RU-vid, and much more. I'm planning by end of year to request a reduction in work hours to focus more hours into my writing business (plus this gives me a nice nest egg to save up) in case they say no or their options aren't good enough then I implement plan B. So, to anyone if you found value in what I had done with my profession path I recommend getting started now! Make the strategic move as Iris suggest about taking up arms with a silent sabbatical and determine after sometime what's the next move either business or part-time job or career change, whatever this is your life take control of it and be deliberate about it everyone has a moral responsibility for their well-being.

So it is difficult to quit, and I have found the quiet quitting idea to be a perfect moniker for how I now approach the job. I have applied for well over 100 jobs but I am pushing 60 years old with this disease and I think people are scared to hire me. I know it isn't supposed to be a factor but clearly it is. I am highly skilled and qualified with lots of experience and an amazing portfolio but nothing happening. So I continue in this current job because the meds would immediately bankrupt me without proper insurance.

Thanks for sharing Jim. I hear you. You said "I know it isn't supposed to be a factor" - and I disagree with that. These things are never black and white, it always depends on the situation - and your situation sounds like a very good example of when age and health are factors that are influencing your decisions. I get that. And I'm sorry you've had to learn how to live/cope with a rare neuromuscular disease - though it seems like you're doing a pretty good job at that. I also get that you chose to quietly quit, and I sincerely hope it works for you. I've read comments from people who said it works for them, so I've learnt something from this video too. Quiet quitting isn't as black and white as I thought: there are situations in which it genuinely does work for people, in the sense that it gives them peace of mind and acceptance. Thanks for adding to the conversation, and opening my eyes! Appreciate it.

You obviously have no idea what quite quitting is. You don’t do the least amount of work possible. You do good work, but ONLY the work you were hired to do. It is a counter to hustle culture. Most people who quiet quit are doing it because they did not get what they were supposed to get after hustling for a company. It’s not less work, it’s just the work you were only required to do. Less work would be less than what you were hired to do. Don’t talk about things if you can’t grasp what it is. You can’t have an option if you’re not educated enough on the topic.

Hi! It seems I have triggered you with this video - apologies. I posted this video before quiet quitting went viral, and I noticed that the conversations around this topic (including its interpretation) have evolved since then. The media coverage on quiet quitting, subsequent comments, and discussions on (for example) LinkedIn have made it clear that there are a lot of different interpretations of the term, and confusion around what exactly it means. Some people describe it exactly as you did here, whereas others have described it as doing the bare minimum and no longer caring about one's job.

@@IrisSmyth it’s irritating when people talk about subjects, and their information is wrong. There is only 1 interpretation of quiet quitting.. one that is right, and the others that are wrong. It’s not a subjective term. QQ is doing good passable work, but not going above and beyond the scope reasonable for the compensation provided. It is a reaction, maybe even a consequence to hustle culture. I don’t mind a video being incorrect, but a correction video should be in its place.

I hear you, and understand what you see as QQ. I don't disagree with what you're saying QQ is. I've just seen that many people see it differently, or as more than that. It's clear that you think I'm wrong - are you also saying that all those other people are wrong? I think it's probably best to 'agree to disagree' on the interpretation - and I have a feeling you're going to disagree with that (which is, ironically, also fine). On another note... I see you've started your own channel, but not yet posted any videos. I'm intrigued by your choice of channel name, and am curious what type of videos you're going to post? Care to share?

@@IrisSmyth it’s not what I see, it’s what QQ is. I’m not making up a definition to fit a narrative. It’s cause and effect. I would say being wrong does effect multiple people so multiple people being wrong is probable. To simply answer your question, yes all of those people are wrong. People like to hide behind their ignorance and ego to the point they simply can’t fathom being wrong. This is why all those people continue to be wrong. It’s ok to be wrong, when someone proves you wrong. But those who then do not learn and adopt what is correct is a fool. I had a channel. But it wasn’t this account. It was a call of duty channel. Life hits, and you got to make decisions for the greater good and maximize your time.
