What is all that stuff stamped on your lumber and is it important? YES! Here’s why…
Buying lumber can result in headaches if you don’t buy the right wood boards for your project. Imagine spending a lot of money for that special project just to realize you overpaid, or even worse, you bought the wrong lumber. There have been times when I wondered why one stack of construction lumber was more expensive than another when the dimensions and quality seemed about the same. The stamp gave me insight into why there was a price difference. You also don’t want to ensure you aren’t accidently buying mismatched boards. I’ve made the mistake of buying some boards with a larger radius round over on the edges than others. I wish I would have paid attention to the stamps.

This was real interesting! I used to work in a shop that built fine art crates and we'd stamp the skids after the crate was finished. I never understood exactly why or why the stamp had to be approved, but now I know it must have been to prove we used heat-treated lumber for export (since the original stamp would have been cut/sanded away)

Spruce, pine, fir, how do you know which it is? If I could choose, I would rather have fir!

Generally speaking, when compared, spruce is white, fir is pink, and pine appears yellow. These are easier to identify when you can compare together.

Great video Billy! I knew a lot of this information already, but it’s always good to have those refreshers. I’m doing a project now that I have Canadian fir that was KD-HT, #2, 2x12x12 and it’s good wood! 😂
